\n\tBoth bands take the stage each night with father-son combinations. Train brings out frontman Pat Monahan\u2019s 14-year-old son Rock to sing and play guitar on a cover of Journey\u2019s \u201cStone in Love\u201d \u2014 going toe-to-toe with lead guitarist Butch Walker on the solos \u2014 as well as Dirty Heads\u2019 \u201cVacation\u201d (Monahan senior featured on a 2021 version) and the group\u2019s own \u201cSave Me, San Francisco.\u201d\u00a0Barenaked Ladies\u2019 ranks, meanwhile, include Ed Robertson\u2019s multi-instrumentalist son Lyle, 26, as a utility player handling guitar, bass, keyboards and backing vocals throughout the band\u2019s hour on stage.<\/p>\n

\n\tYou can bet the papas are not hiding their pride in having their sons be part of the family business.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been pure joy, really,\u201d Pat Monahan tells Billboard<\/em> via Zoom, seated alongside Rock. He says his son \u201cwas born a 40-year-old man. He\u2019s always been a mature, well-mannered guy that has a great sense of humor and talent and is easy to be around. It\u2019s a thrill because he\u2019s got a great work ethic; when people bring their kids on stage, if they\u2019re not adults, people immediately go, \u2018This will be cute.\u2019 Then when it\u2019s great they go, \u2018Oh, sh-t! Karen, get your phone!\u2019 It\u2019s really fun to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the BNL front, Lyle Robertson was initially intended as an on-call substitute for bassist Jim Creeggan, whose father passed away last month. Lyle also played with the group last November and December as well during its nearly five-week run on the CPKC Holiday Train.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe original plan was to have Lyle on retainer in case Jim needed to slip home last-minute to help (his family),\u201d Ed Robertson explains. \u201cThe idea was we would fly Lyle out and he could cover bass stuff. Then we thought, \u2018Why not keep Lyle out here? He\u2019s already here. He can play some guitar, do some vocals, and if Jim needs to split in a hurry he can slide over to bass.\u2019 Jim\u2019s the one who said right away, \u2018Lyle\u2019s a great musician, such a great player. We all know and love him. Let\u2019s bring him along,\u2019 and it\u2019s been a real pleasure to have him out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn BNL\u2019s case that\u2019s also allowed the band to perform as a quintet for the first time since Stephen Page left in 2009. \u201cIt\u2019s really nice,\u201d the elder Robertson notes. \u201cThere are certain songs, like \u2018Falling For the First Time,\u2019 where I\u2019ve missed having an extra guitar. Playing \u2018Brian Wilson,\u2019 it\u2019s great to have that second acoustic guitar. It\u2019s sure nice having an extra live player to fill out the sound.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNot surprisingly, the two sons have bonded backstage and on off-day gatherings. \u201cWe went out for dinner one night with all the Train guys, and me and Rock sat next to each other, quoting Tropic Thunder<\/em> and Hot Rod<\/em>, all these comedy movies that we thought we were the only ones that found them funny. When we\u2019re not soundchecking or playing, everyone\u2019s chatting, getting to know each other. You hear stories of, for lack of a better term, train wrecks of people on tour not getting along \u2026 but this is just like summer camp, a huge community in the very best way. I think it\u2019s a dream come true for both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn the Atmosphere\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tBoth of the sons have music in their DNA, of course, and have been around their fathers\u2019 bands since they were born. Rock Monahan, the Seattle-born youngest of three siblings, has been making cameo appearances on stage since he was seven years old, and though he was more focused on singing initially he also began taking guitar lessons when he was young.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was never insanely serious about it,\u201d Rock says. Getting exposed to Joe Satriani playing Van Halen songs with Sammy Hagar last year changed his tune, however. \u201cI listened to Van Halen for that Sammy Hagar show,\u201d Rock says, \u201cand I was like, \u2018I didn\u2019t know that you could do that.\u2019 It kinda put me down the rabbit hole. My dad showed me Led Zeppelin, and that became kind of the most important thing for me, one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNow he greatly admires Jimmy Page (\u201cHe\u2019s such an amazing songwriter\u201d) and well as Pink Floyd\u2019s David Gilmour (\u201cHis solos on everything just feel like you\u2019re literally floating\u201d), along with Metallica\u2019s Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield, Black Sabbath\u2019s Tony Iommi\u00a0 and Ozzy Osbourne guitarists Zakk Wylde and Randy Rhoads. (The Monahans attended the Back to the Beginning Osbourne\/Sabbath farewell festival last summer in Birmingham, England.) More recently he\u2019s taken an interest in the late Jeff Buckley\u2019s playing. \u201cAll I do is listen to music and play music,\u201d Rock says.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd nobody is doubting that he can.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s very much like I was when I was 14 \u2014 a musical sponge, and just obsessed with guitar,\u201d says Walker, who suggested \u201cStone in Love\u201d as a showcase for the teenager\u2019s talents. \u201cHe\u2019s got his dad\u2019s pipes at 14, which is crazy; he literally can sing every range, and we can sing and play any songs with him. He\u2019s a confident performer. He\u2019s been around this for so long, he can hang around and joke and talk shop, kinda like another band member.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWalker and Train bassist Hector Maldonado \u201chave really taken Rock under wing,\u201d according to Pat Monahan \u2014 including some guitar shop visits, though dad notes that \u201cUncle Butch and Uncle Hector never really put up a credit card for these adventures \u2014 but they sure like to go on them.\u201d Rock\u2019s recent acquisitions include sparkly purple ESP purchased in Nashville and a Gibson Custom Murphy Lab Flying V (like Hammett plays) during a recent excursion in Chicago. \u201cThat was an expensive little afternoon,\u201d his father quips.<\/p>\n

\n\tRock\u2019s also been building a legion of admirers during the tour, beyond the fans who are flooding social media with videos. \u201cMy manager also manages Green Day and Keith Urban, and separately they have both texted him,\u201d Pat Monahan says. \u201cKeith was like, \u2018Hey, can I come out and jam with Rock?\u2019 \u2014 not Train, Rock.\u201d Urban joined the band for a cover of Player\u2019s \u201cBaby Come Back\u201d Aug. 7 in Chicago. \u201cBillie [Joe Armstrong] texted [the manager], \u2018Pat\u2019s son\u2019s kinda f\u2013kin\u2019 awesome man.\u2019 [Journey\u2019s] Neal Schon followed him the other day on Instagram. It\u2019s fun to watch that for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMonahan says he, Rock and Walker are writing a new song together, \u201cso after \u2018Stone in Love\u2019 does its thing on Instagram we can put that out there.\u201d The plan forward is for Rock to be \u201chabitually writing \u2026 between school and activities back home. He\u2019s gonna have to put those 10,000 hours in if he really wants to become a songwriter.\u201d And there\u2019s no question he\u2019s up to the task.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m just doing what I love with people I love,\u201d Rock says. \u201cI definitely feel like it\u2019s a second family out there. I\u2019ve grown up with this band around me, and it\u2019s really fun and amazing to be part of it like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tLovin\u2019 Life\t<\/h2>\n

\n\tLyle Robertson has been on his own musical path, \u201calways fiddling around with things,\u201d since he was very young. He began playing drums when he was seven, when his favorite bands were AC\/DC and Led Zeppelin. He switched to guitar around age 11, adding bass \u2014 which he considers his favorite instrument \u2014 at about 16 and more recently teaching himself to play piano.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe\u2019s currently studying at Humber Polytechnic in Toronto and has his own band, High Flyer, that began releasing music during 2023 and put out a new single, \u201cCome a Little Closer,\u201d during July. A spate of other material is recorded and ready for release in the near future.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLyle is a really accomplished musician,\u201d says BNL\u2019s Kevin Hearn. \u201cHe grew up around it, and around us, so it\u2019s an easy fit. It\u2019s been fun to have him be part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s also been \u201ca crazy learning curve, in the best way\u201d for Robertson. \u201cA lot of my friends have been saying, \u2018It must be super easy to learn the songs,\u2019 but not necessarily,\u201d he explains. \u201cSome of them, yes, I already knew how to play them. But some of the songs, the parts I learned were on the record but I\u2019ve never actually played them live, so it\u2019s really been a great opportunity to get to learn them like this and play them on this level.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLyle adds that while he\u2019ll occasionally join his father on a private airplane between shows he\u2019s just as happy to be on the bus with his \u201cuncles\u201d and bandmates.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI know lots of people who don\u2019t love sleeping on the bus,\u201d he notes, \u201cbut I love sleeping on the bus. I love the whole routine of it. It\u2019s super fun to come back on the bus with Kev and Jim and Ty [drummer Tyler Stewart] and the tour manager Ike [Schaible] and shoot the sh-t, put on a movie, read a bit. It\u2019s a great lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLyle will continue to study and play with High Flyer and is up for any future involvement with BNL. Watching his young friend Rock\u2019s tour experience, however, has given him another idea.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYeah, I made a joke the other day \u2014 \u2018Hey, dad, think if I spend the next day off with Pat he\u2019ll get me a guitar, too?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere tour, which also includes opener Matt Nathanson, runs through Aug. 30., wrapping up in Auburn, Wash. Train has been playing songs from its upcoming studio album, Mad Dog in the Fog<\/em>, which comes out Aug. 28, while Pat Monahan is preparing for the Sept. 6 opening of Begin Again<\/em> \u2014 a stage musical adaptation of the 2013 John Carney film for which he\u2019s written new songs \u2014 in San Diego.<\/p>\n

\n\tBNL, meanwhile, has accompanied the summer trek with two new songs \u2014 \u201cAlmost Ready\u201d and \u201cCareful (For Dee)\u201d \u2014 and is planning to begin writing in earnest during early 2027 for a follow-up to 2023\u2019s In Flight<\/em>.<\/p>\n
