Well, just get a look at the next one.

Yep, what you’re seeing above is the boxy new fifth generation Tucson, and Hyundai said it’s been completely redesigned using its ‘Art of Steel’ philosophy. Certainly looks strong. It’s much more SUV-like in its overall shape and features giant arches plus lots of protective cladding.

The whole car is bigger than before too. At 4.7m long and just over 1.9m wide, it’s 60mm longer than the previous generation (with an extra 30mm in the wheelbase) and 40mm wider. This, according to Hyundai, means “best-in-class interior space”, with rear seat headroom increased by 29mm and the rear door opening angle improved from 73° to 83°.

That’s enough of the nerdy stuff though, let’s get back to the design. Hyundai has stuck on some wild H-shaped lighting front and rear apparently inspired by architectural lighting. The slim horizontal lamps use an ‘indirect lighting structure’ to create a softer look.

Not quite chunky enough for you? Well, there will also be an XRT trim with bespoke adventure spec bumpers, skid plates and wheel arch protectors. No word on whether that will come to the UK just yet, though.

There’s also no news on potential powertrains, although we have been shown some snaps of the interior. That looks to be full of light colours and actual wood trim, while the dash is dominated by a large central screen. There are still some proper buttons on the square-ish steering wheel, though. Phew.

Based on the popularity of the fourth-gen Tucson, this one will sell like warm baked goods here in the UK.
