\n\tDuring a recent interview on the Nicky at Night <\/em>podcast, the global girl group looked back on the intense pushback they initially received following the release of their single \u201cGnarly,\u201d and how watching listeners embrace the song over time changed their perspective on criticism, artistry and taking risks.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen podcast host Nicky Reardon brought up the song\u2019s early reception, the members acknowledged that \u201cGnarly\u201d was met with critiques when it first dropped. Instead of allowing the feedback to influence their artistic direction, though, the group chose to stand behind the track.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor KATSEYE, that decision was partly inspired by polarizing artists. Sophia pointed to Lady Gaga as an example of an artist who isn\u2019t afraid to make people uncomfortable or release something audiences may not immediately understand.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe fully puts her full artistry into something,\u201d Sophia said, explaining that Gaga\u2019s willingness to step outside the box resonated with the group. For KATSEYE, the goal isn\u2019t necessarily to create music that everyone immediately understands, but to make something that leaves an impression.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFor us to have a moment where we came out with something and everyone\u2019s like, \u2018This is horrible. Like, why would you come out with that?\u2019 made us realize that\u2019s the artistry: Putting out something so interesting and impactful,\u201d Sophia recalled.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe members ultimately recognized that the response to \u201cGnarly\u201d was part of the reason it landed. As opposed to making something that\u2019s simply enjoyable in the moment and quickly forgotten, they want to make music that sticks with audiences.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe want it to, like, stick in people\u2019s heads,\u201d Lara added.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat mindset became particularly meaningful as the reaction to \u201cGnarly\u201d evolved. What initially generated intense criticism eventually became a fan favorite, giving KATSEYE a real-world example of how quickly public opinion can change. \u201cGnarly\u201d reached No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the group\u2019s first appearance on the chart.<\/p>\n

\n\tLara elaborated on this stance by noting that the experience fundamentally taught the group that they don\u2019t need to let backlash determine how they feel about their own work.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think the controversy of \u2018Gnarly\u2019 prepared us to do that for the rest of our career,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe group has already begun incorporating more of their individual personalities and performance styles into their work, with the members previously describing their evolution from the highly structured training environment of Dream Academy<\/em> into artists who feel comfortable stepping outside of their established framework.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the group continues developing its sound, KATSEYE seems interested in choosing artistry over predictability, even when that means some listeners won\u2019t immediately understand what they\u2019re doing. After all, if \u201cGnarly\u201d taught them anything, it\u2019s that being polarizing doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you\u2019ve misfired. It might just mean people are paying attention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
