You know, it\u2019s America. They\u2019re always fighting in the streets.\u201d His interest is piqued by an altercation outside his window. \u201cOh, that guy just hit the other guy in the face. Oh, now Grandma just got involved\u2026 slamming with her purse. Oh boy, you never know what you\u2019re gonna get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the sort of everyday roughhousing you might find in <em>Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy<\/em>, to give it its full title. Don\u2019t expect a typical biopic here \u2013 one that might show the band forged in the late-\u201980s Bay Area punk scene, releasing debut album \u2018Dookie\u2019 in 1994 \u2013 or, for that matter, winning five Grammys and selling a staggering 75million records. Rather, <em>Nimrods<\/em> comes inspired by the early, scrappy adventures of Cool, bassist Mike Dirnt and lead guitarist\/vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>From an idea originally formulated by Armstrong, <em>Nimrods<\/em> is a wild coming-of-age road movie, as a trio of teenagers \u2013 Tommy (Mason Thames), Fred (Kylr Coffman) and Chad (Ryan Foust) \u2013 are pranked into heading to LA under the belief that their band Analog Dogs is about to open for Green Day. Cool and his bandmates fed director Lee Kirk anecdotes from their pre-\u2018Dookie\u2019 days. \u201cIt\u2019s not a mirror image but is it is definitely a fuzzy reflection of us,\u201d says Cool. \u201cWe\u2019re a part of these kids, and they\u2019re a part of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3963227\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3963227\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3963227\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Green_Day_In_Nimrods_At_The_Bar.jpg\" alt=\"Green Day\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1270\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3963227\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Green Day sit at the bar in \u2018Nimrods\u2019. CREDIT: Trafalgar Releasing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the band even cameoing (at an in-store that Tommy and co. crash), it\u2019s really a love letter to their legions of fans. \u201cI mean, we love them, and I guess it is a special relationship we have with them,\u201d says Cool, 53. \u201cI\u2019ve been to shows and seen other bands\u2019 fans and it\u2019s not that our fans are crazier or better looking\u2026 which they are, very much so! But they\u2019re so cross generational. There\u2019s different age groups of fans. We\u2019re their band and it\u2019s a part of a culture of misfits that belong together.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What sort of stories did you tell Lee Kirk as he was preparing <em>Nimrods<\/em>?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cA lot of them were cooked into the script. Like the severed head\u2026 that actually happened. We stayed at this guy\u2019s house, and he\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah, I want you to meet my friend Sleepy.\u2019 We\u2019re in Copenhagen. And he pulls his frickin\u2019 human head in a jar out of his closet. He\u2019s like, \u2018You can\u2019t tell anyone I have this!\u2019 And we\u2019re like, \u2018Holy fuck!\u2019 And then he set it down, and we were all sleeping on the floor next to this head. It was pretty scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Would you say you were particularly wild in your younger days?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I would say. I mean, that\u2019s what people would say about us. We were just us. There was no barometer because we were just this traveling pack of banshees that just behaved in our way, and we just did our thing, and we didn\u2019t realise that other people weren\u2019t like us, I guess. We were just all batshit crazy, and we gravitated to other people that were similar, other bands and creatives and stuff. So it becomes a scene at that point. We let Lee and company handle that because\u2026 he\u2019s writing the movie. He should know what the right mood is \u2013 and he sure did. And it was a surprise to us when we first saw the screening when the songs came on. There\u2019s a demo version of \u2018In the End\u2019\u2026 it\u2019s from an old, unreleased demo. And then \u2018Haushinka\u2019 being played\u2026 that\u2019s awesome. Hearing that song in like a Dolby 7.1 sound system in a theatre, it\u2019s pretty amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Had you ever had a proper Green Day biopic proposed before?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah. It happens every so often. Every couple of eras, someone\u2019s like: \u2018We should make a film about your life.\u2019 Like, we ain\u2019t done yet. We don\u2019t want to sit and look back and spin our wheels, spending our energy talking about what we\u2019ve done when we\u2019re still doing stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Do you feel that <em>Nimrods<\/em>, with its DIY punk spirit, suits the ethos of the band?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely. It\u2019s a relevant movie, and we feel like we\u2019re a very relevant band \u2013 and, like I said, we\u2019re not done by any means. So, a biopic story is more of a retirement plan. Where are you at now with the next album?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to tell you that!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>There was talk of your rock opera \u2018American Idiot\u2019 being turned into a movie. Has that talk gone away or could it come back?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s probably more talk now that <em>Nimrods<\/em> is such a hit. It\u2019s great. We\u2019ve shown that we can make records \u2013 and apparently we can make movies too. So, let\u2019s do it. We make musicals. We can make \u2018Dookie\u2019\u2026 every morning!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018American Idiot\u2019 particularly feels like it\u2019s built for the big screen, right?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah, just got to do the right [thing]. Come on, we just put out <em>Nimrods<\/em>! You\u2019re trying to make us make another movie! That\u2019s like as soon as you put a new record out, two weeks later\u2026 \u2018Oh, you guys gonna go back in the studio?\u2019 Well, look, I\u2019ll tell you this: we\u2019re very proud of \u2018American Idiot\u2019, and it\u2019s an incredibly important record to us \u2013 and we\u2019re not <em>not<\/em> talking about it!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>One thing the band hasn\u2019t done is headline Glastonbury. Would you love to do that?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah. If they ask us. It\u2019s the last great festival that we haven\u2019t done.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Did you ever get close?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI just go with what\u2019s on the day sheet! CREDIT: Trafalgar Releasing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the band even cameoing (at an in-store that Tommy and co. crash), it\u2019s really a love letter to their legions of fans. \u201cI mean, we love them, and I guess it is a special relationship we have with them,\u201d says Cool, 53. \u201cI\u2019ve been to shows and seen other bands\u2019 fans and it\u2019s not that our fans are crazier or better looking\u2026 which they are, very much so! But they\u2019re so cross generational. There\u2019s different age groups of fans. We\u2019re their band and it\u2019s a part of a culture of misfits that belong together.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What sort of stories did you tell Lee Kirk as he was preparing <em>Nimrods<\/em>?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cA lot of them were cooked into the script. Like the severed head\u2026 that actually happened. We stayed at this guy\u2019s house, and he\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah, I want you to meet my friend Sleepy.\u2019 We\u2019re in Copenhagen. And he pulls his frickin\u2019 human head in a jar out of his closet. He\u2019s like, \u2018You can\u2019t tell anyone I have this!\u2019 And we\u2019re like, \u2018Holy fuck!\u2019 And then he set it down, and we were all sleeping on the floor next to this head. It was pretty scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Would you say you were particularly wild in your younger days?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I would say. I mean, that\u2019s what people would say about us. We were just us. There was no barometer because we were just this traveling pack of banshees that just behaved in our way, and we just did our thing, and we didn\u2019t realise that other people weren\u2019t like us, I guess. We were just all batshit crazy, and we gravitated to other people that were similar, other bands and creatives and stuff. So it becomes a scene at that point. We let Lee and company handle that because\u2026 he\u2019s writing the movie. He should know what the right mood is \u2013 and he sure did. And it was a surprise to us when we first saw the screening when the songs came on. There\u2019s a demo version of \u2018In the End\u2019\u2026 it\u2019s from an old, unreleased demo. And then \u2018Haushinka\u2019 being played\u2026 that\u2019s awesome. Hearing that song in like a Dolby 7.1 sound system in a theatre, it\u2019s pretty amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Had you ever had a proper Green Day biopic proposed before?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah. It happens every so often. Every couple of eras, someone\u2019s like: \u2018We should make a film about your life.\u2019 Like, we ain\u2019t done yet. We don\u2019t want to sit and look back and spin our wheels, spending our energy talking about what we\u2019ve done when we\u2019re still doing stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Do you feel that <em>Nimrods<\/em>, with its DIY punk spirit, suits the ethos of the band?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely. It\u2019s a relevant movie, and we feel like we\u2019re a very relevant band \u2013 and, like I said, we\u2019re not done by any means. So, a biopic story is more of a retirement plan. Where are you at now with the next album?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to tell you that!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>There was talk of your rock opera \u2018American Idiot\u2019 being turned into a movie. Has that talk gone away or could it come back?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s probably more talk now that <em>Nimrods<\/em> is such a hit. It\u2019s great. We\u2019ve shown that we can make records \u2013 and apparently we can make movies too. So, let\u2019s do it. We make musicals. We can make \u2018Dookie\u2019\u2026 every morning!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018American Idiot\u2019 particularly feels like it\u2019s built for the big screen, right?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah, just got to do the right [thing]. Come on, we just put out <em>Nimrods<\/em>! You\u2019re trying to make us make another movie! That\u2019s like as soon as you put a new record out, two weeks later\u2026 \u2018Oh, you guys gonna go back in the studio?\u2019 Well, look, I\u2019ll tell you this: we\u2019re very proud of \u2018American Idiot\u2019, and it\u2019s an incredibly important record to us \u2013 and we\u2019re not <em>not<\/em> talking about it!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>One thing the band hasn\u2019t done is headline Glastonbury. Would you love to do that?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYeah. If they ask us. It\u2019s the last great festival that we haven\u2019t done.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Did you ever get close?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI just go with what\u2019s on the day sheet!
