Control Center <a href=\"https:\/\/aerocorner.com\/news\/minneapolis-artcc-atc-zero-outage\/\">lost radar and communications for around two hours<\/a>. The outage disrupted more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelpulse.com\/news\/impacting-travel\/air-traffic-control-outage-delays-flights-across-midwest\">1,100 flights<\/a> across the center\u2019s 330,000 square mile, nine-state airspace sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Two days earlier, on August 4th, President Donald Trump departed the White House inside his Marine One military helicopter. As Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) protocol requires, the pilots tried to contact Reagan National Airport to tell them to halt commercial traffic during the flight. But the air traffic controllers never heard the transmission and cleared a different airplane for takeoff \u2014 which came closer than the minimum safe distance allowed. (When this story first broke in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/faa-investigates-marine-one-safety-incident-in-washington-e95d6ed2\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>the White House dismissed it, noting that Trump was never in \u201charm\u2019s way.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The outages were surprising, given the administration\u2019s stated ambitions to rebuild the nation\u2019s air traffic control system. Last February, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy invited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/01\/31\/elon-musk-trump-donor-2024-election\/\">major Trump donor<\/a> Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDuffy\/status\/1887209012867047525\">and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)<\/a> to overhaul the FAA. On X, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1887233566263967812?s=46\">promised<\/a> \u201crapid safety upgrades to the air traffic control system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But Musk ended up as more wrecking ball than problem solver. His agency did not help the FAA buy or implement any major system upgrades. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/starlink-terminals-are-being-sent-restore-us-air-traffic-control-connectivity-2025-02-27\/\">He wrongly accused Verizon<\/a> of running the FAA\u2019s communications system, while also failing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2025\/02\/26\/musk-starlink-doge-faa-verizon\/\">turn Starlink into the agency\u2019s telecom provider of choice<\/a>. Its signature achievement was the termination of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDuffy\/status\/1891656952662405304\">400 FAA employees<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/faa-firings-trump-doge-safety-airlines-27390c6a7aac58063652302df5a243d3\">maintenance technicians<\/a> at 18 different air traffic control centers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<div class=\"c39lj11\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">Musk ended up as more wrecking ball than problem solver.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Meanwhile, the \u201crapid safety upgrades\u201d Musk promised never materialized. The last few years have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/suzannerowankelleher\/2025\/05\/21\/air-traffic-control-outages-timeline-us-airports\/\">equipment failures<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/airlines\/flights-disrupted-at-dallas-airports-due-to-equipment-outage-20f8ee86\">Dallas<\/a>, Denver, and Houston. Unexplained fumes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/10\/us\/atlanta-control-tower-evacuated\">Atlanta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaltv.com\/article\/newark-burning-smell-tower-flights-paused\/70819927\">Newark<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksby.com\/life\/travel\/several-us-northeast-airports-stop-traffic-due-to-equipment-outages\">Potomac<\/a> air traffic control center. Chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/08\/us\/more-faa-staffing-shortages\">staffing shortages<\/a> in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The nation\u2019s unstable air traffic control system made 2025 the worst year for flight delays in over a decade, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pirg.org\/edfund\/resources\/plane-truth-2026\/\">US Public Interest Research Group<\/a>. One in four flights was delayed, diverted, or canceled for a total of almost 1.7 million disruptions. Tarmac delays, where airplanes are held on the ground but passengers must stay on board, were up 64 percent compared to 2024. And an estimated 2.4 million checked bags were lost or damaged on domestic flights alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In July 2025, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act authorized <a href=\"https:\/\/modernskies.faa.gov\/\">$12.5 billion in supplemental funding<\/a> for a complete overhaul of the FAA\u2019s air traffic control system. Of that total, roughly $5 billion is dedicated for software upgrades. And since Elon Musk\u2019s DOGE fell short of its promises, the administration has invited Peter Thiel, another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-19\/billionaires-thiel-and-uihlein-pump-millions-into-republican-pac?utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_content=business&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_id=97757_v0_s00_e0_tv2_a1demo0hi8uvxm\">Republican megadonor<\/a>, to step in at the FAA. His company Palantir is deeply integrated with the FAA\u2019s systems, making it a prime contender for many of those contracts, despite no significant prior experience with air traffic control.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">According to air traffic controllers \u2014 several of whom spoke to <em>The Verge <\/em>on condition of anonymity so as not to jeopardize their jobs \u2014 these moves will do little to alleviate the issues on the ground (and in the air). They say that the FAA\u2019s most urgent needs remain on the personnel side.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">None of the $12.5 billion in new FAA funding authorized by the One Big Beautiful Bill goes toward personnel. Instead, it seems destined for Palantir\u2019s pockets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac1 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<hr class=\"duet--article--divider _1044qizj thksxb0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _18mzr4b6 _18mzr4b5 _19wv7tc1\">In Trump\u2019s second term, Palantir, the analytics company that Thiel cofounded and currently chairs, has rapidly extended itself across the entire federal government like a giant, data-sucking squid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">It has operated as a fringe government contractor since 2008, beginning by building databases for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/search?hash=c24a0d0e43b05428e1ecc37fd2e1fd9a\">Department of Defense and the FBI<\/a> and spending the next decade and a half building up its defense business. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/1ea8a9a4-3726-3491-9040-66950bb67606-P\/latest\">It surpassed $1 billion in federal contracts for the first time in 2025<\/a>. In 2026 it will surpass $1.5 billion. Palantir is now one of the 100 largest government contractors in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">You\u2019ve probably heard about some of its projects. <a href=\"https:\/\/defensescoop.com\/2026\/04\/03\/palantir-maven-feinberg-directive\/\">It built the Maven AI-powered targeting system<\/a> that made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/what-maven-smart-system-and-what-does-it-do\">its wartime debut earlier this year in Iran<\/a>. It designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2026\/01\/report-ice-using-palantir-tool-feeds-medicaid-data\">a mapping system that can generate<\/a> targets for ICE agents in real time. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/hhs-is-using-ai-tools-from-palantir-to-target-dei-and-gender-ideology-in-grants\/\">developed a search engine<\/a> for the Department of Health and Human Services that allowed DOGE employees to identify and cancel more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2025\/08\/supreme-court-allows-trump-administration-to-terminate-783-million-in-nih-grants-linked-to-dei-initiatives\/\">$780 million worth of grants<\/a> linked to DEI initiatives. It is even working on a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/04\/24\/palantir-irs-contract-data\/\">mega-database<\/a>\u201d of US citizens and their financial information for the IRS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Legislators and watchdog groups have raised concerns around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/17\/nx-s1-5898504\/ice-medicaid-palantir-data\">data privacy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/24\/deadly-iran-school-strike-casts-shadow-over-pentagons-ai-targeting-push\/\">poor<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highereddive.com\/news\/ctrlf-federal-agencies-used-keyword-searches-to-nix-grants-en-masse-cour\/826065\/\">accuracy<\/a>, and\/or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/ranking-members-news\/wyden-ocasio-cortez-demand-answers-from-palantir-about-plans-to-build-irs-mega-database-of-american-citizens\">legality<\/a> of every program mentioned above. But Palantir\u2019s reach keeps growing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The FAA started using Palantir\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palantir.com\/platforms\/foundry\/\">Foundry, a data integration and analytics system<\/a>, in 2024 during the Biden administration. All of the agency\u2019s data and much of its tech stack now runs through Palantir systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In 2025 it won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/19\/faa-ai-close-calls-00963264\">no-bid contract<\/a> to make an AI-powered runway collision avoidance tool. And another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/CONT_AWD_692M1526F00076_6920_47QTCA24D004L_4732\">no-bid contract<\/a> to add AI to the FAA\u2019s grants system, which pays for up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/faq\/q-f05-what-federal-share-under-iija\">95 percent of air traffic control improvements<\/a> at small airports. This year the FAA <a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/opp\/a482a2d76f194b278ab5bc7fdfded26d\/view\">opened bidding<\/a> for \u201can ontology-driven Foundry Operating System\u201d to drive AI integration across the agency. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palantir.com\/platforms\/ontology\">Ontology data integration schema<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palantir.com\/platforms\/foundry\/\">Foundry operating system<\/a> are proprietary Palantir technologies. Of course the company won that contract too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<div class=\"c39lj11\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">All of the agency\u2019s data and much of its tech stack now runs through Palantir systems<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Palantir was even selected as one of three finalists to bid on the FAA\u2019s $875 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/newsroom\/SMART_One-Pager.pdf\">SMART national airspace system<\/a> contract. SMART is an AI-powered tool that will help controllers manage traffic flows and predict disruptions before they disrupt operations. Once again, Palantir\u2019s integration with FAA systems was considered to be far more important than experience in the industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Palantir ultimately lost the competition to a Boston-based startup called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airspace-intelligence.com\/\">Air Space Intelligence<\/a>, whose executive team includes four Palantir alumni: VP of operations Dan Rickert, head of US operations Steph Starsia, growth lead Connor Ryan, and chief of staff Tate Krasner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">(Air Space Intelligence responded to <em>The Verge<\/em>\u2019s request for comment by referring us to the FAA\u2019s media relations team.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac1 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<hr class=\"duet--article--divider _1044qizj thksxb0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _18mzr4b6 _18mzr4b5 _19wv7tc1\">Meanwhile, real-time concerns are piling up \u2014 and FAA leaders have rushed to blame the agency\u2019s ongoing problems on its personnel. On August 7th, thunderstorms in the Northeast caused around <a href=\"https:\/\/viewfromthewing.com\/sean-duffy-blamed-sick-controllers-for-fridays-11000-flight-disruptions-now-theyre-pushing-back\/\">9,000 flight delays and 2,000 cancellations<\/a>. In a post on X, Duffy implied that the main reason for delays was \u201ccontrollers calling out sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac1 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"ejz0tzd\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">His post outraged air traffic controllers around the country. \u201cThese facilities have been understaffed for decades,\u201d said one. \u201cIf two controllers can\u2019t make it to work for some reason, that\u2019s 40-60 percent less staff. These crazy numbers make it seem like so much more than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/planes\/617438\/plane-crash-air-safety-faa-layoffs\">As we reported in February 2025<\/a>, the nation\u2019s air traffic control system was already unstable even before Musk\u2019s intervention. Almost 90 percent of the nation\u2019s air traffic control centers were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/31\/business\/air-traffic-controllers-understaffed.html\">chronically understaffed<\/a>, and the overwhelming majority of technology in those centers was classified as \u201cunsustainable\u201d or \u201cpotentially unsustainable\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-24-107001\">FAA<\/a>. But while the tech is set for an upgrade, staffing remains a huge \u2014 and underfunded \u2014 issue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Shut out of the One Big Beautiful Bill, the agency must instead draw on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/sites\/dot.gov\/files\/2025-05\/FAA_FY_2026_Budget_Estimates_CJ.pdf\">normal 2026 budget for staffing<\/a>, which includes only $239 million in new funds to support controller hiring initiatives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">One such initiative was the \u201cLevel Up Your Career\u201d initiative that encouraged gamers to apply to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/atc-hiring\">become air traffic controllers<\/a>. According to Duffy, the campaign yielded <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecDuffy\/status\/2086574114215493969?s=20\">2,000 applications<\/a>, which he described as a \u201cHISTORIC\u201d success. Still, it\u2019s a long road ahead for these candidates: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/us-watchdog-review-high-failure-rate-faa-air-traffic-control-training-2026-02-05\/\">Thirty percent of candidates wash out during training<\/a>, and it takes up to three years to become a fully certified controller.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">To be clear, any investment in America\u2019s aging air traffic system is a good thing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/about\/history\/brief_history\">No administration since Ronald Reagan\u2019s<\/a> has launched as many projects as the Trump administration has done since 2025. Even longtime observers in the field of aviation safety are impressed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot going on,\u201d said Hassan Shahidi, president and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation. \u201cReplacing copper wires across the country. Refurbishing and replacing radars. This administration certainly has focused on implementation and getting things done.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But Palantir\u2019s software fixes are years away from deployment. Its AI-based tools are still completely unproven. And front-line controllers have yet to see much benefit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">One air traffic controller had not even heard of any of the initiatives <em>The Verge <\/em>asked about. \u201cThe only new technology we have gotten was a new screen that runs off of the same old hardware,\u201d he said. \u201cSo that says a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<div class=\"c39lj11\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">\u201cThe only new technology we have gotten was a new screen that runs off of the same old hardware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj13\">\u2014 Anonymous air traffic controller<\/cite><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Despite the controller shortfalls, the agency actually thinks it can operate with fewer of them. In May it released a revised \u201cfull staffing target\u201d that calls for only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/newsroom\/faa-releases-bold-new-air-traffic-controller-hiring-plan\">12,563 active controllers<\/a>, down from its original target of 14,633. It cites AI and better scheduling practices for the change in headcount.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">That\u2019s tough to believe when many facilities already schedule people for 10 hours a day, six days a week, multiple weeks in a row.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cIt is more attractive politically for them to award large contracts to companies \u2026 rather than focus on the workforce itself,\u201d said one 20-year veteran of the FAA. \u201cI would rather see our pay and staffing issues adequately addressed first.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The schedule can be so punishing that burnout and exhaustion are common. Controllers risk medical suspension or even the loss of their job if they seek professional help for anxiety or depression. The suicide rate for air traffic controllers is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/i-cant-talk-to-anybody-one-air-traffic-controllers-mental-health-struggle-debd9624\">eight times higher than the national average<\/a>. One controller who spoke to <em>The Verge <\/em>knew of two colleagues who have died by suicide this year. (The FAA did not respond to a request for comment.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">No wonder the air traffic control system remains in crisis even after the deadliest year in commercial aviation since
