Then, when it ends, it\u2019s as if a fog has blown off out to sea, allowing you to discern outlines and shapes and patterns you were too in love to notice. Did I really love you \u2014 or did I make the whole thing up? Some questions you can never put to rest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n
\u201cPeaches\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\tIn the early 2000s, I\u2019d just finished working on Piglet\u2019s Big Movie<\/em>. I was fiddling around with the AAP Machine I kept around, despite not knowing how to work it. One day, I turned on the drum function and improvised \u201cPeaches\u201d on the spot \u2014 which is the opposite way I usually compose music, the lesson here maybe being that underthinking a song can sometimes guide you down a strange, fearless road. \u201cPeaches,\u201d and its perspective, literally came out of nowhere. It\u2019s about getting what you always wanted \u2014 peaches, dancing, an alluring face \u2014 and realizing you\u2019d rather be home under the covers dreaming about these things.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n- \n
\n\u201c<\/strong>Love Has No Ending\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\tI was probably introduced to W.H. Auden, the English poet, during the one year I spent at Sarah Lawrence College. Auden\u2019s original poem is titled, \u201cAs I Walked out One Evening,\u201d and I\u2019ve always loved it, especially the message that love is as limitless as water rushing, and can never be measured, that love is forever in a state of readiness, a pre-bloom that can slowly give way to exaltation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n

\n\u201cMother of Pearl\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\tSally is my firstborn, my golden daughter, but in some ways, I\u2019ve always thought of her as a maternal figure. Just as when we\u2019re growing up, we\u2019re slightly scared of our parents (they know us better than anyone), our own children can be just as formidable. Sally, like her brother Ben, inspires and protects me, she\u2019s every polished stone and jewel combined, she\u2019s my gift, my lasting light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n

\n\u201cSlowly\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\tI had invited the wonderful Swiss harpist, Andres Vollenweider, to join me on the Vineyard, along with Teese Gohl, my musical arranger for almost two decades, the goal being to come together and see what music we could come up with. I had the melody for \u201cSlowly\u201d lying around. That week, in my barn, the lyrics came to life. I love this song. Whenever I need to cry, but can\u2019t, I put on \u201cSlowly.\u201d Your stride will come back to you<\/em> \u2014 that always bursts the dam. The promise that whatever happens, you\u2019ll come back, you\u2019ll be okay, you\u2019ve got this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n- \n
\n\u201cFour In the Morning\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\tA year and a half ago, Judy Belushi, a longtime Vineyarder, neighbor, and close friend, was bedbound, finishing up a four-year battle with endometrial cancer. Ben and I visited her regularly, sitting by her bedside and writing songs with her. Judy had completed the lyrics for \u201cFour in the Morning,\u201d and I composed the melody, then recorded it. It\u2019s a song about walking out, walking away, walking toward<\/em> yourself. Judy \u2014 I wish you were still here and could hear your own words.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n- \n
\n\u201cLove the Way I Do\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\tDavid Saw, who\u2019s an incredible musician, was staying with us on the island, and one day he came up with this melody when I came up behind him and began singing the words. Pity the poor man who never knew love the way I do<\/em> \u2014 it can\u2019t be more straightforward. Ben and Natasha Beddingfield were there too, and contributing to the finished product.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n- \n
\n\u201cShare the End\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\t\u201cShare\u00a0The\u00a0End\u201d always felt like a hidden gem \u2014 quiet but powerful.\u00a0Today, in a time of war, real and phony despots, division, and dishonesty across the globe, it sometimes feels to me the world is\u00a0still\u00a0\u201cgoing up in flames\u201d \u2014 five decades after I first recorded this song.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n

\n\u201cDo It Anyway\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\tI wrote \u201cDo It Anyway\u201d in the mid-1980s. It\u2019s about picking yourself up, and getting back into whatever the game was that just knocked you out of commission. It\u2019s based on advice I remember giving a friend who was down in the dumps, and I remember recording the song in my New York City bedroom. Who was the friend to whom I was offering such peppy counsel? Oh, it was probably me, songs are funny that way. And near the end I patched in a recording made by my giddy, beloved, most favorite relative growing up \u2014 my wonderful Uncle Peter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
