Portuguese police are working to determine the exact circumstances behind the tragic death of the young Welsh cyclist Finlay Tarling on Friday, with initial reports suggesting the rider may have been struck by a van which prematurely resumed driving before all the riders had passed, and which was traveling in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n
The 19 year old NSN Development Team rider died during Friday\u2019s stage of the Volta a Portugal, days after two solid performances in time trials. He was 11th in the prologue on August 5th and 15th in the time trial last Monday. Tarling was sitting 74th overall at the start of Friday\u2019s stage.<\/p>\n
Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manh\u00e3 has stated that the crash happened at approximately 3.40pm on the N306 road between Paredes de Coura and Ponte de Lima in Arcozelo. It says that Tarling is believed to have been behind the peloton and one of the last riders on the road.<\/p>\n
The van driver is thought to have stopped his vehicle but then resumed, believing that all riders had passed. The collision happened soon afterwards.<\/p>\n

A short video of the scene after the accident shows a small white van facing towards a damaged bike. A cracked windscreen suggests the vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction to Tarling.<\/p>\n
According to the Correio da Manh\u00e3, police consider the collision to have been as a result of \u201ca serious security breach and violation of the rules of movement.\u201d<\/p>\n
It states that one of the matters investigators are trying to clarify is the position of the broom vehicle, which indicates when the rear of the race has passed.<\/p>\n
The race was neutralized following the crash, but resumed Saturday with a hilly 142.6km stage ending with a summit finish at Mondim de Basto. The pre-race publicity caravan has been cancelled for the two final days of competition.<\/p>\n
Finlay\u2019s NSN Development Team did not start, with five riders and staff leaving the race.<\/p>\n
\u2018A tragedy that transcends the sport\u2019<\/h2>\n
Tarling is the younger brother of Netcompany Ineos rider Josh Tarling, winner of the European TT championship in 2023 and a stage of the Giro d\u2019Italia last year.<\/p>\n

His passing has led to tributes from a wide range of people, as well as statements of sympathy from Portuguese politicians and others.<\/p>\n
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Margaret Balseiro Lopes was one of those.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government expresses its deepest regret for the death of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, following a serious accident during the 8th stage of the Tour of Portugal,\u201d she wrote on social media. \u201cTo the family, friends, teammates and the Portuguese Cycling Federation, our most heartfelt condolences.\u201d<\/p>\n
Portuguese police, meanwhile, said an investigation was underway.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe regret to inform you of the accident and extend our condolences. We emphasize that we always prioritize maximum safety for cyclists, with a mobile and static safety device deployed throughout the entire stage to prevent accidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe circumstances of the accident will be investigated, and a resolution will be communicated when available. The accident occurred further back in the stage, and efforts will be made to investigate. There was a collision between the cyclist and a light vehicle. We are currently investigating.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Volta a Portugal organization has called for restraint in relation to the accident.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not the time for speculation regarding the circumstances of the accident. The incident is being investigated by the GNR Command (National Guard), which is responsible for a thorough investigation into the facts,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are all deeply shocked. Cycling is a sport that carries risks, but we are never prepared for a tragedy of this magnitude. Finlay lost his life. A family lost a son. A team lost a teammate. The sport of cycling lost one of its own members. It is a tragedy that transcends the sport itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tarling is the latest in a number of riders to pass away this year.<\/p>\n

Aside from Tarling\u2019s racing accident this week, the Colombian Cristian Camilo Mu\u00f1oz fell in the Tour du Jura in April and succumbed six days later due to the complications of a knee infection.<\/p>\n
Others died while training, with Italian rider Francesco Mazzoleni (18), the Belgian Milal Bral (21) and the Frenchman Adrien Chipault (21) all being hit by drivers, while 16 year old Irishman Shane O\u2019Brien passed away after colliding with a stationary vehicle.<\/p>\n
Their deaths highlight the danger of the sport, with motor vehicles being a particular problem. Volta a Portugal organizers will be under scrutiny over Tarling\u2019s passing, as will the driver concerned.<\/p>\n
Many tributes have been paid to the young Welsh rider, amongst them former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski, the Netcompany Ineos teammate of brother Josh Tarling.<\/p>\n
\u201cLife just isn\u2019t fair\u2026 fucking cycling! I knew Fin personally. Such a great guy and such a tragic loss. My thoughts are with his family and everyone who was close to him,\u201d Kwiatkowski wrote on social media.<\/p>\n
His teammates Filippo Ganna and Thymen Arensman also indicated their sorrow through social media posts.<\/p>\n

Tour de France champion Tadej Poga\u010dar paid his respects. \u201cWe have lost a young member of the cycling family. I would like to extend my condolences to his family, friends, and teammates,\u201d he stated online.<\/p>\n
NSN Development Team rider Jens Verbrugghe paid a poignant tribute to his teammate. \u201cFin\u2026 why\u2026,\u201d he wrote online. \u201cRest in peace. Thanks for everything, my friend. We\u2019ll miss you, and you\u2019ll always be with me. My condolences to his family and friends,\u201d<\/p>\n
The team too expressed its sympathies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today.<\/p>\n
\u201cFin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.<\/p>\n
