The management and Board are committed to working together to keep pace with that progress and ensure the musicians we intend to\u00a0honor\u00a0feel truly seen and heard by our actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mason and other Grammy executives have\u00a0reportedly been\u00a0holding discussions with artists and industry figures\u00a0representing\u00a0K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, Indian\u00a0music\u00a0and other\u00a0scenes, including representatives from BTS\u2019 label HYBE.<\/p>\n<p>No changes to the category have been announced, but the Grammys board will\u00a0convene\u00a0to \u201cdetermine how we best\u00a0honour\u00a0this music in the future\u201d.\u00a0As it stands, records must make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages to be eligible for the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category.<\/p>\n<p>It marks a shift in tone from Mason\u2019s\u00a0initial\u00a0response to BTS\u2019 boycott, in which he defended the award more robustly.\u00a0\u201cThe spirit of this new category is to shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><i>NME\u00a0<\/i>argued against creating a K-pop specific Grammy category back in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPop music is pop music, regardless of geographical location, the racial or ethnic identity of those making it, the language it\u2019s sung in, or any other factor you might choose to segregate people by,\u201d we wrote.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSegregating awards shows by language or region, as already happens with the Grammys\u2019 Latin and \u2018global music\u2019 categories, continues to perpetuate the othering of music that isn\u2019t Western, white \u2013 until very recently Black artists also struggled to be considered in the main categories \u2013 and English-led. It takes the onus\u00a0off of\u00a0awards bodies to work towards equal diversity and\u00a0representation, or\u00a0judging music on its merit and with an open mind, because those releases can just sit in the specific categories created to celebrate them at arm\u2019s length.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The eligibility\u00a0period for new releases to be considered for the 2027 Grammys closes on August 28, with nominations to be announced on November 16. The ceremony will take place at Los Angeles\u2019 Crypto.com Arena on February 7, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>BTS, meanwhile, are currently on\u00a0the North American leg of their \u2018Arirang\u2019 world tour. Earlier this week,\u00a0V revealed he has been receiving treatment for hearing loss in his right ear, while Jungkook said he was also managing a shin injury.<\/p>\n<p><i>NME\u00a0<\/i>gave \u2018Arirang\u2019 four stars, noting: \u201cAfter\u00a0nearly four\u00a0years, BTS are back doing what they do best \u2013 serving as\u00a0both ambassadors\u00a0and explorers,\u00a0fuelled\u00a0by Recording Academy announced the new category in June, saying at the time that it would recognise \u201cartistic excellence\u201d in Asian pop music originating from or widely recognised within Asian due to make its debut at next year\u2019s ceremony,\u00a0but BTS have said they will not be submitting their new album \u2018Arirang\u2019 for consideration, or any of their other music, saying that they hoped their work could be \u201cheard and loved for itself, beyond regions or languages\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr has acknowledged that the category may not\u00a0represent\u00a0the artists that it was intended to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Grammy organization exists to serve all music people, and part of that is working to ensure that no voice or community gets overlooked or misunderstood,\u201d he said in a statement\u00a0shared with\u00a0<i>Billboard<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear from our numerous conversations with many stakeholders over the past two weeks that, regardless of our intent and desire to be even more inclusive, there are some artists in this space who feel that this category isn\u2019t representing the music they work so hard to create, in the way they wish. The management and Board are committed to working together to keep pace with that progress and ensure the musicians we intend to\u00a0honor\u00a0feel truly seen and heard by our actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mason and other Grammy executives have\u00a0reportedly been\u00a0holding discussions with artists and industry figures\u00a0representing\u00a0K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, Indian\u00a0music\u00a0and other\u00a0scenes, including representatives from BTS\u2019 label HYBE.<\/p>\n<p>No changes to the category have been announced, but the Grammys board will\u00a0convene\u00a0to \u201cdetermine how we best\u00a0honour\u00a0this music in the future\u201d.\u00a0As it stands, records must make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages to be eligible for the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category.<\/p>\n<p>It marks a shift in tone from Mason\u2019s\u00a0initial\u00a0response to BTS\u2019 boycott, in which he defended the award more robustly.\u00a0\u201cThe spirit of this new category is to shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><i>NME\u00a0<\/i>argued against creating a K-pop specific Grammy category back in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPop music is pop music, regardless of geographical location, the racial or ethnic identity of those making it, the language it\u2019s sung in, or any other factor you might choose to segregate people by,\u201d we wrote.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSegregating awards shows by language or region, as already happens with the Grammys\u2019 Latin and \u2018global music\u2019 categories, continues to perpetuate the othering of music that isn\u2019t Western, white \u2013 until very recently Black artists also struggled to be considered in the main categories \u2013 and English-led. It takes the onus\u00a0off of\u00a0awards bodies to work towards equal diversity and\u00a0representation, or\u00a0judging music on its merit and with an open mind, because those releases can just sit in the specific categories created to celebrate them at arm\u2019s length.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The eligibility\u00a0period for new releases to be considered for the 2027 Grammys closes on August 28, with nominations to be announced on November 16. The ceremony will take place at Los Angeles\u2019 Crypto.com Arena on February 7, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>BTS, meanwhile, are currently on\u00a0the North American leg of their \u2018Arirang\u2019 world tour.
