Throughout the competition, smaller spins that emphasized style ended up becoming fan-favorites, but those tricks were not scored as high as large spins. Fewer spins means the athletes have more time to focus in the air, allowing them to perform more stylish grabs during tricks. Spins below 720 degrees are also much slower, giving each trick a cinematic, slow-motion appearance.

The spin cap will also force athletes to find new ways to make their runs stand out. Rather than chasing the highest number, athletes must find creative ways to win, getting amplitude out of the halfpipe and spinning in different directions.

With the spin cap drastically changing the way the athletes approach their runs, it is sure to draw some criticism of its own. Skiing and snowboarding have progressed partly due to big spins earning big scores, forcing athletes to push their limits to win. Some see limiting spins as a step against progression, but the league is only implementing the rule for the semi-finals. In the finals, everything is fair game, and athletes can spin and push progression to their heart’s content.

Whether the spin cap actually brings in more stylish runs or not is yet to be seen. But come September and the World Challenge event, some of the greatest freestyle skiers and snowboarders will have to adjust to this new rule if they want their team to move on to the final.

Fans who want to catch the action and watch the spin cap can do so on the Snow League’s YouTube channel, where the event will be streamed live.

Cardrona Alpine Resort is home to some of the best terrain parks in the world.
