In addition to the recovered Matisse works, they also took five paintings by Brazilian modernist Candido Portinari.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe English edition of <em>Folha de S. Paulo<\/em> reported the value of the eight works\u2014<em>The Clown<\/em>, <em>The Circus<\/em>, <em>Monsieur Loyal<\/em>, <em>The Nightmare of the White Elephant<\/em>, <em>The Codomas<\/em>, <em>The Swimmer in the Aquarium<\/em>, <em>The Sword Swallower<\/em>, and <em>The Cowboy<\/em>\u2014to be more than 1 million Brazilian reais (around $193,000). They had been on view as part of \u201cFrom Book to Museum: MAM S\u00e3o Paulo and the M\u00e1rio de Andrade Library.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe recovery of these eight works represents news of enormous importance for the culture and heritage of S\u00e3o Paulo,\u201d Tot\u00f3 Parente, the municipal secretary of culture and creative economy, said in a statement. \u201cThese are works that belong to the city and to the memory of the people of S\u00e3o Paulo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tParente added that the \u201cSecretariat has adopted measures to reinforce the security protocols of the M\u00e1rio de Andrade Library and expand the protection of its heritage. Our commitment is to ensure that these works are preserved and return to fulfilling their cultural function, as part of the public heritage and memory of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tA police spokesperson told the <em>Times<\/em> that the thieves overpowered a security guard and two visitors; security footage shows them carrying the works on the streets of S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cAt one point in the video, a man places a stack of frames next to a pile of garbage on a sidewalk, then returns to pick it up,\u201d per the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAuthorities located the Matisse works in an apartment in the S\u00e3o Paulo suburb of S\u00e3o Bernardo do Campo. At the apartment, police said they arrested one person \u201con suspicion of receiving stolen goods\u201d; one suspect had been arrested the day after the robbery, while two others, \u201cdescribed as the organizer of the crime,\u201d were arrested in April, according to the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe recovery of these Matisse pieces came a day before another major police investigation in Europe. Authorities recovered three works that had been stolen from Italy\u2019s Fondazione Magnani Rocca, which included Matisse\u2019s work on paper, <em>Odalisque on the Terrace<\/em>\u00a0(1922). The other two stolen pieces were Pierre-Auguste Renoir\u2019s <em>Les Poissons<\/em>\u00a0(1917) and Paul Cezanne\u2019s\u00a0<em>Still Life with Cherries<\/em>\u00a0(1890).
