After a millennium of fighting (and losing) against this creeping threat, the surviving humans have all but given up \u2013 until destiny marks badass samurai Emma out as the key to victory. This stern, stoic warrior has been infected with The Blight too \u2013 a parasitic disease that turns friendly woodland creatures into rampaging killers \u2013 and while it\u2019s robbed her of her memories, it\u2019s also helped her grow strong, vine-like hair which can be used as a weapon or a Spider-Man-inspired mode of transport. She can also absorb the power of mutated bosses known as Nushi to prevent the corruption from spreading.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019re told early on that the end of the world is actually all mankind\u2019s fault with people wanting to rid themselves of their pesky emotions. The prologue doesn\u2019t go into much detail beyond saying this decision has caused their souls to slowly decay ever since. Think that\u2019s complicated? Wait until you get to the flashbacks within flashbacks that add even more layers of needlessly knotted lore and backstory to this predictable sci-fi tale.<\/p>\n<p>Emma\u2019s not alone in her perilous journey. While she\u2019s the one actually hacking her way through overgrown expanses and smashing up repetitive robotic foes with sword or bow, her sick surrogate sister Kagura and gruff mentor Brad are waiting in the safety of their lumbering Cleanse Walker, a truck with legs that\u2019s been lifted straight from Star Wars. There\u2019s an intricate skill tree to help you customise your fighting style as you progress through the ruined land but apart from a series of arcade-style finishing moves and increases to weapon damage and HP, there\u2019s no real evolution to Emma\u2019s combat abilities. To really drive home the repetitive nature of the game, one song scores each of the 13 missions and it\u2019s simply played on a loop until you\u2019ve finished. It\u2019s dull after the first ten hours. It\u2019s mind-numbing after 30.<\/p>\n<p>Pulling from Game Freak\u2019s decades-long history as masters of monster battling, Emma is also joined by a magical dire wolf known as Koo. Just like a Pok\u00e9mon, they have a series of attacks that can be unleashed on whatever snarling brute is standing in your way but they mostly just do their own thing.
