32 mountaineers were forced to pay for their own helicopter evacuation from the Go\u00fbter Refuge on Mont Blanc in France after they continued their ascent despite warnings by mountain guides. <\/strong>The region had closed two mountain refuges on Mont Blanc due to increased danger of rockfall and landslide. The climbers nevertheless continued and ultimately found themselves effectively stranded at the 3,835-meter (12,582-foot) Go\u00fbter Refuge after local authorities closed the Go\u00fbter and T\u00eate Rousse refuges because of dangerous conditions on the route to Mont Blanc.<\/p>\n

Following municipal order ARR2026_014 SECU of August 11, 2026, citing the very high risk of rockfall in the Go\u00fbter Couloir, the T\u00eate Rousse and Go\u00fbter refuges are closed to the public from 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, until their official reopening.<\/p>\n

Rather than use a state-funded rescue helicopter, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains Mayor Jean-Marc Peillex instructed a private helicopter company to bring the climbers down at their own expense.\u00a0<\/strong>Peillex described the situation as \u201cubuesque\u201d (English: absurd), and said the climbers had knowingly ignored warnings from mountain guides and other organizations advising against climbing the route.<\/p>\n
