Having wrapped up the band\u2019s \u2018I Quit\u2019 tour at the tail end of 2025, then crowning the year with a celebrity-packed wedding to tech entrepreneur Jonathan Levin on New Year\u2019s Eve, the bassist has spent 2026 cementing her place in the world of cinema.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: Haim \u2013 \u2018I Quit\u2019 review: quieter but no less revelatory<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last week, new Callum Turner-starring film <i>One Night Only<\/i>, featuring the musician both on screen and behind its soundtrack, premiered in the US. Today (August 14) <i>Sunny Dancer<\/i> \u2013 with the Haim sister once again composing the score alongside collaborator (and Lana Del Rey, The Last Shadow Puppets bassist) Zachary Dawes \u2013 hits UK screens.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Helmed by up-and-coming British director George Jaques, the film follows 17-year-old Ivy (Bella Ramsey) as she attends a summer camp for young people affected by cancer. For Haim, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes aged 14, the plot took on a special resonance. \u201cI had a very deep connection to the material because I went to a diabetes camp when I was in high school,\u201d she told <i>NME<\/i>.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SUNNY DANCER | OFFICIAL TRAILER | BELLA RAMSEY | ONLY IN CINEMAS AUGUST 14\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UQxRhHK_Bmw?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>\u201cI felt so alone in my illness and no one really understood it, including my family. So when I went to Camp Conrad Chinnook in California back in the early \u201800s, where every single kid was going through the exact same thing that I was going through \u2013 and so many different things that I had no idea about too \u2013 it was huge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s soundtrack also includes songs by Jamie xx, Fred Again.., Yeah Yeah Yeahs and CMAT, with Haim singing the praises of the Irish star. \u201cCMAT is an incredible performer. I mean, that set at Glastonbury [last year] was incredible and breathtaking,\u201d she said. \u201cShe\u2019s so talented. I\u2019m a big fan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, Este digs into the making of <i>Sunny Dancer<\/i>\u2019s music, the similarities between herself and Charli XCX\u00a0and the future of Haim.<\/p>\n<h2>NME: Hi Este, you\u2019ve told us about your personal connection to <i>Sunny Dancer<\/i> \u2013 what was your reaction to seeing the film?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\">\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Este Haim:<\/strong> \u201cI mean, not to be LA about it, but I\u2019m a triple Pisces: you look at me funny and I cry for two weeks. I\u2019m a pretty emotional gal and cancer is a really fucked-up disease. Bella Ramsey is such an amazing actor and they really fucking killed it. They brought such an intense emotionality and authenticity to the part. It was difficult not to cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How do you see your role as a collaborator when you\u2019re scoring a film?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWell, I work with two other collaborators every day that ends in \u2018y\u2019 and they happen to be my family. So I\u2019m used to working alongside other people to make something hopefully great \u2013 and I think I thrive in that environment. I like working with a team. I also like not having to worry about lyrics and making something that\u2019s going to hopefully amplify or facilitate what\u2019s going on screen. CREDIT: Hedi Stanton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Do you ever have to dial back the hooks for something that sits in the background?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI go really hard on percussion a lot of the time and most directors are like, \u2018Este, you\u2019re pushing it into a carnival cruise ship commercial. You need to rein it in a little bit. Maybe not so many maracas.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>There\u2019s a lot of amazing artists on the soundtrack \u2013 who were your favourites that you wanted to get in there?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in high school, Yeah Yeah Yeahs\u2019 \u2018Fever To Tell\u2019 was one of my favourite albums. So to have Karen O on this soundtrack was really, really big for me. I threw a New Year\u2019s Eve party in 2014 in Echo Park [Los Angeles] and [Yeah Yeah Yeahs\u2019 guitarist] Nick Zinner showed up. I was like: \u2018Well now I can literally die happy, nothing is going to get better than this.\u2019 How did he get to my party? Still no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>You\u2019ve got a lot of film work coming out this year \u2013 is this the start of a pivot?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s just mostly that I like to \u2019yes, and\u2026\u2019 my way through life. So if there\u2019s a fun project that someone wants me to be a part of, I\u2019m probably gonna say yes, no matter what it is. Charli\u2019s one of the hardest working people out there: actor, singer, composer. She does it all. But I think that\u2019s because her approach to life in that way is kind of great. Like, if you can do it, why not?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Where does Haim fit into all these projects at the moment?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cHaim business is open for business, 24 hours, seven days a week. We\u2019re always writing, we\u2019re always thinking about what the next thing is going to sound like. But at the same time, I also just want to live in it a little bit and experience life. I want to revel in being married for a minute. I didn\u2019t get married until I was 39, so now I want to enjoy it and stop and smell the roses for a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Paul Thomas Anderson curated a movie marathon for the day after your wedding \u2013 what was that vibe like?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cHungover, popcorn, air conditioning, my favourite movies, lots of snacks, frozen margaritas, pints of ice cream. What are you finding inspiring?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve really found New York to be very inspiring. Being here and reconnecting with friends that I went to college with and didn\u2019t have the chance to hang out with because I was living in LA has been really great. And the energy in New York, I\u2019ve really been thriving in it. You go outside of your door and you\u2019re in the shit; you are in the flow whether you like it or not. I\u2019ve found it really inspiring \u2013 just the energy and the sounds of New York, it\u2019s so different for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What does a New York Haim record sound like?!<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have to wait and see! For Haim, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes aged 14, the plot took on a special resonance. \u201cI had a very deep connection to the material because I went to a diabetes camp when I was in high school,\u201d she told <i>NME<\/i>.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SUNNY DANCER | OFFICIAL TRAILER | BELLA RAMSEY | ONLY IN CINEMAS AUGUST 14\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UQxRhHK_Bmw?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>\u201cI felt so alone in my illness and no one really understood it, including my family. So when I went to Camp Conrad Chinnook in California back in the early \u201800s, where every single kid was going through the exact same thing that I was going through \u2013 and so many different things that I had no idea about too \u2013 it was huge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s soundtrack also includes songs by Jamie xx, Fred Again.., Yeah Yeah Yeahs and CMAT, with Haim singing the praises of the Irish star. \u201cCMAT is an incredible performer. I mean, that set at Glastonbury [last year] was incredible and breathtaking,\u201d she said. \u201cShe\u2019s so talented. I\u2019m a big fan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, Este digs into the making of <i>Sunny Dancer<\/i>\u2019s music, the similarities between herself and Charli XCX\u00a0and the future of Haim.<\/p>\n<h2>NME: Hi Este, you\u2019ve told us about your personal connection to <i>Sunny Dancer<\/i> \u2013 what was your reaction to seeing the film?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\">\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Este Haim:<\/strong> \u201cI mean, not to be LA about it, but I\u2019m a triple Pisces: you look at me funny and I cry for two weeks. I\u2019m a pretty emotional gal and cancer is a really fucked-up disease. Bella Ramsey is such an amazing actor and they really fucking killed it. They brought such an intense emotionality and authenticity to the part. It was difficult not to cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How do you see your role as a collaborator when you\u2019re scoring a film?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWell, I work with two other collaborators every day that ends in \u2018y\u2019 and they happen to be my family. So I\u2019m used to working alongside other people to make something hopefully great \u2013 and I think I thrive in that environment. I like working with a team. I also like not having to worry about lyrics and making something that\u2019s going to hopefully amplify or facilitate what\u2019s going on screen. CREDIT: Hedi Stanton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Do you ever have to dial back the hooks for something that sits in the background?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI go really hard on percussion a lot of the time and most directors are like, \u2018Este, you\u2019re pushing it into a carnival cruise ship commercial. You need to rein it in a little bit. Maybe not so many maracas.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>There\u2019s a lot of amazing artists on the soundtrack \u2013 who were your favourites that you wanted to get in there?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in high school, Yeah Yeah Yeahs\u2019 \u2018Fever To Tell\u2019 was one of my favourite albums. So to have Karen O on this soundtrack was really, really big for me. I threw a New Year\u2019s Eve party in 2014 in Echo Park [Los Angeles] and [Yeah Yeah Yeahs\u2019 guitarist] Nick Zinner showed up. I was like: \u2018Well now I can literally die happy, nothing is going to get better than this.\u2019 How did he get to my party? Still no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>You\u2019ve got a lot of film work coming out this year \u2013 is this the start of a pivot?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s just mostly that I like to \u2019yes, and\u2026\u2019 my way through life. So if there\u2019s a fun project that someone wants me to be a part of, I\u2019m probably gonna say yes, no matter what it is. Charli\u2019s one of the hardest working people out there: actor, singer, composer. She does it all. But I think that\u2019s because her approach to life in that way is kind of great. Like, if you can do it, why not?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Where does Haim fit into all these projects at the moment?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cHaim business is open for business, 24 hours, seven days a week. We\u2019re always writing, we\u2019re always thinking about what the next thing is going to sound like. But at the same time, I also just want to live in it a little bit and experience life. I want to revel in being married for a minute. I didn\u2019t get married until I was 39, so now I want to enjoy it and stop and smell the roses for a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Paul Thomas Anderson curated a movie marathon for the day after your wedding \u2013 what was that vibe like?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cHungover, popcorn, air conditioning, my favourite movies, lots of snacks, frozen margaritas, pints of ice cream. Being here and reconnecting with friends that I went to college with and didn\u2019t have the chance to hang out with because I was living in LA has been really great. And the energy in New York, I\u2019ve really been thriving in it. You go outside of your door and you\u2019re in the shit; you are in the flow whether you like it or not. I\u2019ve found it really inspiring \u2013 just the energy and the sounds of New York, it\u2019s so different for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What does a New York Haim record sound like?!<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have to wait and see!
