This time the move comes from Wahoo and it’s in the form of clarity around what you get with your purchase of a bike computer as well as what you can get if you want to go deeper. There are also some clear holes in the plan that may need some revision.

The previous Wahoo experience

Previously, if you chose a Wahoo computer, what you got was simply a bike computer. It was—and remains—one of the best devices on the market for ride tracking and navigation. The interface is straightforward, and the smartphone integration is top-tier. You could load a route, ride all day, and check your stats on the app before uploading everything to third-party platforms.

It was a solid setup, but over time, it began to look limited compared to Garmin’s ecosystem. A Garmin head unit came backed by training software in Garmin Connect that managed fitness and load across your entire athletic history. Garmin also built a complete ecosystem of hardware so you could track recovery metrics alongside performance data across any sport, with everything feeding back into a unified picture of fitness with recommendations for improvement.

If you wanted to go deeper within Wahoo’s ecosystem, you had to pay. Wahoo offered SYSTM, which was a great paid platform for structured indoor workouts and training tracking. However, because Wahoo lacked a current smartwatch, SYSTM still had no way to capture off-bike recovery data.

To address that hardware gap, Wahoo recently partnered with Coros. That two-way API integration gave Wahoo users free access to a back-end training platform that matches Garmin Connect, alongside the ability to use Coros watches for running and recovery metrics without extra fees.

(Photo: Wahoo)

What’s new

As of this announcement, Wahoo is now offering three levels to choose from. If you don’t care about Wahoo training software, then nothing changes. Buy your computer and get everything the head unit offers on its own, including the standard Wahoo app (which does include some after-the-ride stats), route planning, and live tracking and sharing.

Then, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the full paid tier, named Pro, includes SYSTM and has increased in price. As before, it includes a library of indoor workouts (previously Sufferfest), daily workout recommendations, structured training plans, and options for strength training, yoga, and mobility, plus recovery and mental training. The main difference is the price going from $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year up to $17.99 per month or $179.99 per year.

The big change, though, is a new middle tier. What this actually amounts to is something of a paid version of Garmin Connect. For $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, the Core tier offers an option for riders who don’t want or need structured indoor video workouts but do want advanced performance analytics, training load tracking, and fitness trends.

As part of this expansion, Wahoo is also moving into the inclusion of running metrics. If you add a Coros watch to your hardware ecosystem, the Core and Pro plans offer access to Wahoo’s new Three-Dimensional Pace (3DP) profiling system. This analysis is modeled after Wahoo’s cycling-specific Four-Dimensional Power (4DP), which evaluates neuromuscular power, anaerobic capacity, maximal aerobic power, and functional threshold power to offer a more complete profile than relying on FTP alone. From there, 3DP adapts that concept to a running-specific model that breaks performance down into threshold pace, maximal aerobic pace, and anaerobic capacity to track speed-based performance and training load.

(Photo: Wahoo)

Why you should care

The challenge with this announcement is that it is not immediately clear why users would gravitate toward these new paid plans given the existing options. Garmin offers the same experience as the Core tier for free with the purchase of either a watch or a bike computer. Not everyone loves Garmin, though, so it makes sense that Wahoo is looking for a way to compete. The complication is that Wahoo already helped create a compelling, free alternative. Any Wahoo computer user has access to the Coros Training Hub for a free alternative to Garmin Connect, negating the need for a Garmin watch.

The reason you might consider a paid subscription through this new Wahoo offering essentially comes down to simplicity and exclusive features. At the Pro level, indoor training is something that neither Garmin nor Coros offers for free, and the SYSTM library (which started as The Sufferfest) remains well-loved. The Core tier is definitely a bigger ask. However, the 4DP and 3DP technologies are unique to Wahoo, and many users are loyal to that specific profiling model. Wahoo is also excellent at mobile design, intentionally transforming complex analytics into simple, actionable insights.

Put simply, if you want a highly visual app backed by proprietary sports science and a robust indoor training library, Wahoo is hoping you will pay for the convenience.
