With ten times the power of ordinary road cars. Built primarily for use on a racetrack. That celebrates a racing car. That never raced.

And yet, all of that can be swept aside for a moment, because… it’s a new Koenigsegg! With a massive wing! These things don’t come around all that often, and when they do, they come loaded with purpose, history, and a fire-breathing twin-turbo V8.

This one’s no different. Keen Koenigsegg aficionados – and there are many of you out there – will not have forgotten the story of the original CCGT. Built in 2007 for GT1, it promised to be fast, mighty and all-conquering… right until the FIA changed the rules, and the ‘Segg was shelved before it ever turned a wheel in competition.

So this new car takes up the baton by first looking a fair bit like the old timer. It’s based around the CC850 – CvK’s present to himself – and thus features a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 fed by petrol and a giant roof scoop, pumping out 1,263bhp on regular fuel, and a whopping 1,578bhp on E85 biofuel.

However, where the CC850 got that brilliant and brain-fryingly complex nine-speed ‘manual’ (the ‘Light Speed Transmission’), the CCGT1 adds more brilliant and brain-fryingly complex tech with a new ‘shifting interface’ called ‘Koenigsegg Sequential Shift’ (KSS).

This, we’re reliably informed, features an actual clutch pedal for take-off, and ignition cuts for clutchless shifts, “just like the original CCGT”. It’s basically a race-car style sequential shifter. With a giant, race-car style sequential shifter.

You can of course option in the CC850’s ‘regular’ ESS six-speed gated manual if full-bore GT1-style action isn’t your bag. Then again, the entire car is full-bore GT1-style action. The body is made entirely from carbon and a complete departure from the CC850 it shares a base with.

Most notably, there’s a massive rear wing which is perhaps the most obvious visual nod to the CCGT. This one gets 30 degrees of adjustment, and works with the huge front splitter, active underbody aero and sculpted underfloor to help give the thing 800kg of downforce at 155mph.

Feels nicely spartan inside, and nicely… fighter-jet-esque. There’s a toggle to prime the fuel pumps, a covered ignition switch, and a red starter button. In front of the driver there’s Koenigsegg’s third-gen ‘Chronocluster’ dash, an analogue G-meter powered entirely by fear and human tears, that enormous shift lever, ultra-light carbon fibre seats with six-point harnesses, and a fire extinguisher. A touchscreen appears too, but… nah.

It’s road legal, as mentioned up top, but for the first time ever you can spec a Koenigsegg-official track pack that adds a carbon roll cage, HANS-compatible seats, a racing wheel, racing exhaust, air jacks, fruitier suspension, better aero, better tyres… you get the gist. In fact, you get more than the gist, you get a dedicated track day with full factory support too.

Quite literally topping it all off is something Koenigsegg calls ‘Ghost Fibre’: a white fibre finish first seen on the 2009 Trevita, said to add ‘ballistic’ protection (just how spicy are these track days?), sound deadening and lightness.

“This is something truly special – our first creation that’s designed deliberately as a track-optimised circuit scalpel as well as an extraordinary daily driver,” said Christian von Koenigsegg. “It has been so rewarding seeing the original CCGT come back to life over the last few years. This seems like an appropriate way to celebrate.

“I’m very excited to drive and explore its full capabilities, and I can’t wait for the wider Koenigsegg family to do the same. To also showcase our newly developed Ghost Fibre for the first time is truly exiting and builds on the history of the Trevita project, that was launched in the same era as the CCGT.”

Only 70 are being built… and all of them have already been accounted for. Yeah, that makes sense.

This is the new Koenigsegg CCGT1, and trying to comprehend the conflicting messages might fry your brain quicker than attempting to work out exactly how CvK’s nine-speed manual ‘box operates.
