In the autumn months, Aspen might outrank the others as the best place to see the seasonal colors change from their silvery green to a spectacle of yellows, oranges, and reds. The drive is well worth it. Coming from Denver, the best route takes you through the town of Leadville, past the Twin Lakes, and up over Independence Pass. Entering the town from the south will bring you along the Roaring Fork River, a beautiful stretch of water contrasted with the bright yellows of the aspen trees hugging its rocky banks. Don\u2019t think about going home until you\u2019ve seen Maroon Lake. Likely the most famously photographed sight in all of Colorado, massive groves of yellow aspens blanket each side of the lake, framing in the background the proud Maroon Bells, which, if you\u2019re lucky, could be wearing some early season snow. Hike a few miles in before heading back to town to soak it all in.
