Palisades Tahoe received 124 inches in February and another 84 inches in April, but March produced virtually nothing. The lack of consistent snowfall contributed to an early end to the season, with the resort closing earlier than its original May target.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-15\" style=\"margin: 8px auto;text-align: center;display: block;clear: both\">\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The disappointing season was not unique to Tahoe.<\/strong> Many Western ski resorts dealt with poor snowfall patterns, long dry stretches, warm temperatures, and difficult operating conditions during the 2025-26 winter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, there is reason for optimism heading into the new season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>El Ni\u00f1o Could Bring a Wetter Winter<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>One of the biggest storylines heading into winter 2026-27 is the development of a potentially very strong El Ni\u00f1o.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/el-nino-2026-27-ski-forecast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>El Ni\u00f1o 2026-27 Is Accelerating. NOAA\u2019s July Ski Forecast Has New Winners and Clearer Losers<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>According to NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center, El Ni\u00f1o conditions are already present and are expected to strengthen through the end of 2026, with a 97% chance that El Ni\u00f1o conditions persist into early spring 2027.<\/strong>\u00a0NOAA\u2019s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory is also forecasting a very strong event, with its July forecast showing all 30 model ensemble members producing a peak El Ni\u00f1o strength comparable to the strongest events of the past century. A stronger storm pattern could be exactly what Palisades Tahoe needs after last season\u2019s inconsistent snowfall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is an important caveat, however.<\/strong> El Ni\u00f1o does not guarantee a huge snow season at Palisades Tahoe. The Sierra can see substantial precipitation during El Ni\u00f1o winters, but the elevation of the snow line matters. If storms arrive too warm, some of that precipitation can fall as rain at lower elevations. The exact location and strength of individual storms will ultimately determine whether the 2026\/27 season becomes a great one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A November 25 opening would give Palisades Tahoe a prime spot on the Thanksgiving calendar.<\/strong> The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the first major travel periods of the ski season, and a holiday week opening could attract skiers looking to make their first turns of the winter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naturally, the targeted opening date and the actual terrain and lift operations will depend on snow coverage and weather conditions.<\/strong> Early season openings in the Sierra can vary significantly from year to year.
