Do you want a retro-looking wired keyboard without a number pad? Great. Do you care that it doesn\u2019t have wireless? Perfect. Do you want it preassembled? Buddy, you\u2019re in the right place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But Nathan, you might say, preassembled is the <em>regular way to buy a keyboard<\/em>. That is the baseline expectation. Most people buying a cake expect a cake, not a box of cake mix. And that\u2019s true, for most people and most keyboards. But until now, the Classic-TKL has only been available as a bare-bones kit, and now you can buy one ready to go, with quality components, for less than the price of doing a similar build yourself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">If you\u2019re like me, figuring out what keycaps, switches, and stabilizers to use, then putting them all together, is a big part of the fun of mechanical keyboards. I built one and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24247498\/classic-tkl-mechanical-keyboard-review\">wrote about it in 2024<\/a>; I also tested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/keyboards\/605052\/its-got-that-classic-glo\">the glow-in-the-dark version<\/a>. I like them a lot! But <em>apparently<\/em> not everyone who wants a nice retro-looking keyboard also wants a craft project. Michael Sickler, who owns NovelKeys, told me that the Underscore Edition is aimed at giving NovelKeys\u2019 keyboard enthusiast customer base something they can recommend to friends and family. It\u2019s also aimed at professionals who might lurk on the keyboard subreddits and Discords enough to know what they want, but don\u2019t want to build it themselves. GMK CYL keycaps are <em>the<\/em> benchmark for doubleshot Cherry-profile keycaps. They\u2019re several steps in quality above the keycaps that come with a Keychron, for example. The letters and numbers are crisp and clear and the consistency is unmatched. They\u2019re also expensive; <a href=\"https:\/\/novelkeys.com\/products\/gmk-cyl-classic-beige-keycaps?variant=47916911165607\">you\u2019d pay at least $120 if you bought them on their own<\/a>, though you would get more keycaps. There\u2019s no rattle or tick on any of the stabilized keys. And the Classic Blue linear switches (also made by TypePlus) are also nice. They\u2019re smooth and stable, with almost no wobble; at 53g actuation force and 63g bottom-out, they\u2019re medium-heavy, like a lighter version of the Cherry MX Blacks in my first-ever mechanical keyboard in 2009. They\u2019re not silent, but they\u2019re also not as loud as you\u2019d expect a keyboard this beige to be. (I still feel like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cherry.de\/en-us\/product\/mx2a-blue\">a blue switch<\/a> should be clicky, though.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">I try to avoid the \u201cfans of the genre\u201d review. You know, \u201cif this is the kind of thing you like, you\u2019re going to like it.\u201d But once you get past the strictly utilitarian, pretty much everything about mechanical keyboards comes down to preference and taste.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The Classic-TKL Underscore Edition is a well-executed version of what it is. I built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24247498\/classic-tkl-mechanical-keyboard-review\">the DIY version of the same board<\/a> with the same stabilizers and similarly priced keycaps in September 2024. It worked out to $276, and took me an hour to put together (most of which was spent lubing and tuning the stabilizers). The Underscore Edition costs $189, $100 more than the bare-bones kit. You can\u2019t get keycaps, switches, and stabilizers of this quality for $100 combined.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But it\u2019s also true that $189 can get you a lot of keyboard these days, especially if you\u2019re not attached to the Classic-TKL\u2019s particular vibe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Even within the tenkeyless form factor, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mechanicalkeyboards.com\/products\/evoworks-evo80-polypropylene-plate-keyboard\">Evoworks Evo80<\/a> costs $169 and comes with an aluminum case and both Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless. Same for the $179 <a href=\"https:\/\/mechanicalkeyboards.com\/products\/mk-x-wobkey-crush-80-reboot-pro-non-flex-edition-aluminum-wireless-keyboard?variant=51021418627372\">Wobkey Crush 80<\/a>. But those are different keyboards, with different aesthetics. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/3\/28\/24113566\/8bitdo-commodore-64-retro-mechanical-keyboard-specs-release-date-price-features\">8BitDo Retro 87<\/a> is closer, with several classic-computing-inspired flavors including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0D3H8Y34Z?sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw&amp;tag=theverge02-20\" rel=\"sponsored\">Commodore 64<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0D66K891Q?sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw&amp;tag=theverge02-20\" rel=\"sponsored\">IBM Model M<\/a>, for around $100. But \u2014 no disrespect to the 8BitDo here \u2014 those look maybe a smidge more casual than the Classic-TKL.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">I prefer the Classic-TKL\u2019s plastic chassis to the aluminum of the Evoworks or Wobkey boards. But I wouldn\u2019t mind if it had wireless. It\u2019d also be nice if it shipped with a few extra keycaps, in case you want Mac legends or Control in its proper place (Caps Lock). While I\u2019m being picky: I also wish it came with the option for <a href=\"https:\/\/novelkeys.com\/products\/gmk-mtnu-beige-keycaps\">MTNU Classic Beige<\/a> keycaps, rather than just CYL, because I like MTNU better. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/868153\/dynacap-diy-electrocapacitive-keyboard-hands-on\">electrocapacitive switch<\/a> option would be nice too, but now I\u2019m just getting greedy. (Actually, now I\u2019m just reinventing the <a href=\"https:\/\/mechanicalkeyboards.com\/products\/topre-realforce-r4-tkl-wireless-keyboard?variant=52324381458732\">Realforce<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">If you want the Classic-TKL in a different color, or with different switches or keycaps, there\u2019s still the <a href=\"https:\/\/novelkeys.com\/collections\/keyboards\/products\/classic-tkl-keyboard\">kit version<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/novelkeys.com\/collections\/keyboards\/products\/classic-glo-keyboard\">Glo<\/a> version. And if you want a different keyboard entirely, well, those abound. The Classic-TKL Underscore Edition is the thing that it is, and it\u2019s good at that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p
