Open.<\/p>\n<p>The American is the top seed left in the event and he is looking to defend his Canadian Open from last year after claiming his first-ever Masters title in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Shelton defeated Fonseca 6-3, 7-6 to knock the Brazilian out and set up a quarter final clash with Jakub Mensik at the Masters tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the straightforward scoreline, Shelton believed he well. It was super windy. It\u2019s impossible to play clean, pretty tennis with the wind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo just problem solve, figure things out. Some bad misses, they\u2019re going to happen on a night like tonight. And just keep coming forward to the net and put the pressure on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/ben-shelton\">Shelton<\/a> has now defeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jenson-brooksby\">Jenson Brooksby<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/Zizou-Bergs\">Zizou Bergs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/joao-fonseca\">Fonseca<\/a> to confirm his place in the quarter finals and he is the overwhelming favourite to win the tournament now.<\/p>\n<p>However, he has a worrying record against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jakub-mensik\">Mensik<\/a> ahead of their meeting in the last eight of the Masters event.<\/p>\n<p>Shelton has lost his last two matches against Mensik, which both came during the 2025 season.<\/p>\n<p>He was beaten by the Czech star at the Madrid Open and the ASB Classic last year, while his only victory against Mensik came at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/indian-wells\">Indian Wells<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Should he find a way past Mensik in the quarter finals, he will play the winner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/Learner-Tien\">Learner Tien<\/a> and Daniel Merida.<\/p>\n<p>The other remaining players left in the draw are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/rafael-jodar\">Rafael Jodar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/arthur-fils\">Arthur Fils<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/luciano-darderi\">Luciano Darderi<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/brandon-nakashima\">Brandon Nakashima<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shelton is the only player ranked inside the top 10 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/ATP-Tour\">ATP Tour<\/a> left in the tournament, with the next highest ranked player being world No 13 Jodar.<\/p>\n<p>The American is very unlikely to get a better chance to win a Masters tournament and it could be the perfect preparation for his appearance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/us-open\">US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\">Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\">Jannik Sinner<\/a> not playing a warm-up event prior to the US Open this year, there could be some real upsets in the first week of the New York Grand Slam.<\/p>\n<p>An American male player has not won the US Open since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/andy-roddick\">Andy Roddick<\/a> lifted the iconic trophy back in 2003, so it has been a long time coming for the nation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Article End --><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Shelton says what was most challenging about playing Joao Fonseca at the Canadian Open Liam McMillen 10 Aug 2026 2:00 PM Ben Shelton came through a potential banana skin against Joao Fonseca to book his place in the quarter finals of the Canadian Open.
