tournaments were slowing down there courts to give Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz an advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Laver Cup last year, the Swiss icon said: \u201cI understand the safety net that the tournament directors see in making the surface slower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s for the weaker player. He has to hit extra amazing shots to beat Sinner, whereas if it\u2019s quick, he can only maybe blast a few and, at the right time, he gets past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s what the tournament directors are [thinking], like: \u2018I kind of like Sinner-Alcaraz in the finals, you know? Last year, it was 44.7 in Toronto for the men\u2019s draw, so they have been dramatically slowed down for this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>The players have been complaining about the conditions in Toronto too, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/arthur-fils\">Arthur Fils<\/a>, who has reached the quarter finals in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after his victory against Zachary Svajda in the second round, Fils said: \u201cI needed my serve because on such a slow court, if I don\u2019t win any free points, things start to get complicated. It\u2019s almost slower than clay here. But overall, I\u2019m very satisfied with my performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\">Sinner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\">Alcaraz<\/a> have not played the event, the Canadian Open would have surely hoped they would sign up to the event, having missed it in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the tournament did its best to try and convince Sinner and Alcaraz to attend by slowing down the conditions, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/roger-federer\">Federer<\/a> said, but it ultimately didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p>What it has done it made for some very difficult tennis, which has seen many of the other top stars stumble in the early rounds.<\/p>\n<p>The likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/alexander-zverev\">Alexander Zverev<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/Taylor-Fritz\">Taylor Fritz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/Daniil-medvedev\">Daniil Medvedev<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/flavio-cobolli\">Flavio Cobolli<\/a> all exited the tournament at the second round stage, leaving the Canadian Open particularly devoid of star power.<\/p>\n<p>With the tournament reaching the quarter final stages, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/ben-shelton\">Ben Shelton<\/a> is the only player ranked inside the top 10 who is left in the competition.<\/p>\n<p>He is the defending champion at the tournament and will play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/joao-fonseca\">Joao Fonseca<\/a> for a place in the last eight of the tournament.
