These tools work by comparing a written work against a database filled with content from across the web, scholarly articles, and more to check for matching sentences and phrases. Some, like Turnitin, offer a percentage that claims to illustrate how much of the student\u2019s writing overlaps with other works. Between potential false positives and uncertainty about whether work was duplicated intentionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/ed\/2014\/08\/25\/340112848\/turnitin-and-the-high-tech-plagiarism-debate\">some educators have backed away<\/a> from using that particular tool.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But now, the hunt for copied content is evolving into a war on AI-generated work. As <a href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\/internet\/2026\/02\/24\/how-teens-use-and-view-ai\/\">quickly as students have picked up<\/a> ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, teachers have adopted so-called AI detectors just as fast. A <a href=\"https:\/\/cdt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FINAL-CDT-2025-Hand-in-Hand-Polling-100225-accessible.pdf\">survey<\/a> from the Center for Democracy and Technology found that 43 percent of sixth to 12th grade teachers in the US regularly used AI detectors between 2024 and 2025. Some universities already using Turnitin in their learning management systems <a href=\"https:\/\/discover.online.purdue.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/28%20-%20Turnitin%20adding%20AI%20writing%20detection,%20but%20instructors%20should%20use%20it%20with%20caution.php\">found that the service<\/a> automatically enabled AI detection when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turnitin.com\/blog\/2023-turnitin-wrapped\">the tool launched in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Instead of comparing pieces of written content, AI detectors like GPTZero, Pangram, and the one created by Turnitin rely on their own AI models to guess whether something might not be human-written \u2014 a process that\u2019s arguably even murkier than matching text on the web. As <a href=\"https:\/\/gptzero.me\/news\/how-ai-detectors-work\/\">noted by GPTZero<\/a>, AI detectors use an algorithm to analyze a text\u2019s wording, rhythm, and structure, as well as to pick up on patterns in length and tone that may be more common in AI-written text. This relatively subjective evaluation isn\u2019t as solid as something you could back up by matching text online, and can get tripped up by writers who speak English as a second language. Despite this, Turnitin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turnitin.com\/blog\/understanding-false-positives-within-our-ai-writing-detection-capabilities\">has said<\/a> that its AI detector falsely flags less than 1 percent of human-written content as AI, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pangram.com\/blog\/all-about-false-positives-in-ai-detectors\">Pangram claims<\/a> its false positive rate is just 1 in 10,000. <a href=\"https:\/\/gptzero.me\/news\/gptzero-vs-copyleaks-vs-originality\/\">GPTZero claims<\/a> it has a similarly low rate of mistaking human content for AI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div id=\"how-its-going\" class=\"_1gfm6td1 _1gfm6td0 duet--article--standard-heading _19wv7tc1\">\n<h2 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">How it\u2019s going<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">People online are already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/openai\/686748\/chatgpt-linguistic-impact-common-word-usage\">accusing each other of \u201csounding like AI,\u201d<\/a> but the ready availability of AI detection tools is only adding fuel to the LLM witch hunt. In some high-profile cases, AI writing accusations have directly impacted people\u2019s livelihoods and reputations. Last month, the publisher Minotaur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2026\/jul\/31\/crime-novel-deal-collapses-questions-ai-jerry-falade-call-me-ill-hide-the-body\">dropped a $2 million book deal<\/a> over concerns that its author, Jerry Falade, used AI \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/media\/author-whose-2-million-book-deal-was-derailed-by-ai-concerns-says-hes-innocent-c9f4c91b?mod=e2li\">something he vehemently denies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">There\u2019s Thierry Rignol, a French national <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2026\/07\/how-a-yale-ai-cheating-dispute-became-a-13-count-federal-lawsuit\/\">who sued Yale<\/a> last year after a professor accused him of writing portions of his final exam with AI, resulting in a failing grade and a one-year suspension. The professor used GPTZero to scan Rignol\u2019s writing for signs of AI, but the lawsuit argues that \u201cAI surveillance and detection tools are known to unfairly target non-native English speakers\u201d like Rignol. In February, a student at Adelphi University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/quick-takes\/2026\/02\/11\/adelphi-student-wins-ai-plagiarism-lawsuit\">won a lawsuit against the school<\/a> after his professor similarly claimed he used AI to write an essay. Though the lawsuit doesn\u2019t say which AI tool the professor used to examine the student\u2019s essay, Adelphi University has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/it-services\/turnitin\/\">a licensing agreement<\/a> with Turnitin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/hai.stanford.edu\/news\/ai-detectors-biased-against-non-native-english-writers\">2023 Stanford study<\/a> found that AI detectors falsely flagged essays written by non-native English speakers as AI more often than native speakers. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turnitin.com\/blog\/new-research-turnitin-s-ai-detector-shows-no-statistically-significant-bias-against-english-language-learners\">Many<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/copyleaks.com\/academic-integrity#:~:text=The%20Most%20Accurate%20for%20Non%2DNative%20English%C2%A0Speakers\">services<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pangram.com\/blog\/how-accurate-is-pangram-ai-detection-on-esl\">still argue<\/a> that their tools are accurate when dealing with text written by non-native speakers.) These tools <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2024-10-18\/do-ai-detectors-work-students-face-false-cheating-accusations?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_campaign=linkedin%3Fsref\">may also be biased<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/teaching.unl.edu\/ai-exchange\/challenge-ai-checkers\/#:~:text=Students%20that%20are%20neurodivergent%20(autism%2C%20ADHD%2C%20dyslexia%2C%20etc%E2%80%A6)%20are%20also%20prone%20to%20receive%20false%20positive%20ratings\">against neurodivergent writers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">As pointed out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/humtech.ucla.edu\/technology\/the-imperfection-of-ai-detection-tools\/\">University of California, Los Angeles<\/a>, AI detection tools are trained to pick up on patterns that could indicate AI use, such as repetitive terms and phrases, text that sounds too formal or informal, and nonsensical phrasing. Some, <a href=\"https:\/\/quillbot.com\/blog\/ai-writing-tools\/burstiness-and-perplexity\/\">like QuillBot<\/a>, also measure the \u201cunpredictability\u201d of text, as \u201cAI tends to make the most \u2018obvious\u2019 or most common language choices as compared with human-produced writing,\u201d according to UCLA. They may also look for sentence structure that remains the same throughout as another sign of AI. But these measurements aren\u2019t indicative of AI on their own, as some people may just have a writing style with these qualities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Even though Turnitin touts low false positive rates, <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.turnitin.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/22774058814093-Using-the-AI-Writing-Report\">it maintains<\/a> that its tool \u201cmay not always be accurate\u201d and shouldn\u2019t be used to take actions against a student. <a href=\"https:\/\/grammarly.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/2751036\/31551?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.grammarly.com%2Fai-detector\" rel=\"sponsored\">Grammarly warns<\/a> that users \u201cshould never rely on the results of an AI detector alone,\u201d while <a href=\"https:\/\/gptzero.me\/?via=bakima&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=24013459161&amp;gbraid=0AAAABBZAFqlmMOPrsIE7OfiH08aW-CHc4&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw4dDTBhAqEiwAkHYmSvAe68gs4ItAmiXJqccPnzyrtsiWhV4OJDIMqHa9HCj_2-XJb8SXuhoCVVkQAvD_BwE\">GPTZero says<\/a> \u201cno AI detector can ever truly be 100% perfect.\u201d OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/25\/23807487\/openai-ai-generated-low-accuracy\">even shut down its own<\/a> AI writing detector in 2023 due to low accuracy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But AI writing accusations are still being flung across the web. Last week, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DbOvUQDSgkz\/\">a video broadcast<\/a> to the more than 3.5 million followers across his social channels, Ozzy Osbourne\u2019s son, Jack, accused journalist and <em>Verge<\/em> contributor Kat Tenbarge of using AI to write an article for <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, while flaunting the results from an AI detector, Getsolved, as \u201cproof\u201d of his claim. Tenbarge has refuted the claim in a video and a <a href=\"https:\/\/spitfirenews.com\/p\/jack-osbourne-ai-kat-tenbarge-allegations-debunked\">post on her website<\/a>, but Osbourne hasn\u2019t retracted his accusation or deleted the video, leaving Tenbarge to deal with the trolls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/17\/style\/ai-chatgpt-turnitin-students-cheating.html\">numerous examples<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cz7dnd9xypeo\">false accusations<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/authory.com\/blog\/how-ai-detectors-are-destroying-livelihoods\">writers<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/the-people-getting-falsely-accused-of-using-ai-to-write.html\">students<\/a>, with many accusers failing to acknowledge the disclaimers that come along with some of these AI detection tools.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div id=\"what-happens-next\" class=\"_1gfm6td1 _1gfm6td0 duet--article--standard-heading _19wv7tc1\">\n<h2 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">What happens next<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The uncertainty surrounding AI detectors is enough for some educational institutions to stop using them altogether. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/49304b1e-8a9d-4fb6-bc4d-37dd3430bb98?syn-25a6b1a6=1\">Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.georgetown.edu\/ai\/ethics#:~:text=Because%20generative%20AI%20tools%20do%20not%20generate%20large%20amounts%20of%20text%20word%2Dfor%2Dword%20from%20existing%20works%2C%20it%20can%20be%20difficult%20for%20automated%20tools%20to%20detect%20plagiarism.%20Georgetown%20does%20not%20currently%20use%20the%20AI%20detection%20feature%20of%20its%20plagiarism%20detection%20tool%2C%20Turnitin.\">Georgetown University<\/a>, and others have disabled or restricted the use of AI detection tools. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloanedtech.mit.edu\/ai\/teach\/ai-detectors-dont-work\/\">also warns<\/a> that \u201cAI detectors don\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Instead of relying on tools to weed out AI, many schools are encouraging educators to rethink their lessons. The <a href=\"https:\/\/genai.uchicago.edu\/resources\/faculty-and-instructors\/strategies-for-designing-ai-resistant-assignments\">University of Chicago<\/a>, for example, suggests telling students to slow down their reading, breaking up longer writing assignments, and requiring students to reflect on their work. Stanford University <a href=\"https:\/\/ctl.stanford.edu\/aimes\/ai-teaching-strategies#ai-prohibited\">says professors<\/a> can consider holding assessments in classrooms, while MIT <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloanedtech.mit.edu\/ai\/teach\/ai-detectors-dont-work\/\">advises<\/a> professors to leave room for students to disclose whether they used AI for help on an assignment, without penalty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">With AI becoming more prevalent in and outside the classroom, efforts to suss out what\u2019s written by a human or a machine are ramping up as well. Some online platforms are only exacerbating suspicions surrounding AI use. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/968855\/substack-pangram-ai-detecting-tool\">Substack has built Pangram<\/a> into its app, allowing users to scan blogs for suspected AI-generated content, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/973384\/linkedin-seems-like-ai-slop-button\">while LinkedIn added<\/a> a \u201cseems like AI slop\u201d button on posts. href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/901461\/wikipedia-ai-generated-article-ban\">banned AI-generated articles<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div id=\"read-this\" class=\"_1gfm6td1 _1gfm6td0 duet--article--standard-heading _19wv7tc1\">\n<h2
