Pre-save\/pre-order the album here.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Inspired by \u201cPalantir, societal breakdown and streaming\u2019s endless hamster wheel\u201d, the album was produced by A.G Cook (Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek).\u00a0Cook said he departed from the original brief of \u201cdestroying &amp; rebuilding their demos, Screamadelica-style, into a finished product, but that hybrid, half-remix approach felt completely wrong to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Cook said he became \u201cobsessed with their live sound\u201d, and explained that he \u201cinsisted on recording live drums before most of the songs were even finished. We spent a lot of time recording intricate guitar parts with specific guitar pedals, and as little time as possible doing anything on a computer, at least by my standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a few rounds of that, ZIRP! emerged as a concept, and a sort of utopian, dystopian mantra. Others may ask themselves: why does it feel a bit like we\u2019re living the same day over and over again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to the band for an <em>In Conversation<\/em> interview, where they told us about the tough conditions of recording the album. \u201cI think we went into it with these really big ambitions to try to make a different kind of album and really stretch and push ourselves to make something new,\u201d bassist Colin Caulfield told us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think we just did not anticipate that it would be a really, really big challenge to agree with those new guidelines, or that kind of exploded approach to the band. We were still, in a certain way, in that mode of, \u2018Everything\u2019s good,\u2019 and then that\u2019s when things really sneak up. You\u2019re not expecting it. And then resentments build\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frontman Zachary Cole Smith added: \u201cRelationships take work and some vigilance. We left making \u2018Deceiver\u2019 saying, \u2018Let\u2019s do that again!\u2019 And maybe we would have, but being in a band is tough. I think for a lot of people the music just shows up on their phone, and they\u2019re, like, \u2018Cool,\u2019 and they\u2019ll listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s not a tonne of transparency about all that goes into making the sausage, there are so many decisions and so much money and time\u2026 It\u2019s daunting. You make it on spec, like, \u2018I hope people like this,\u2019 and you kind of put all your eggs in that basket. Others may ask themselves: why does it feel a bit like we\u2019re living the same day over and over again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to the band for an <em>In Conversation<\/em> interview, where they told us about the tough conditions of recording the album. \u201cI think we went into it with these really big ambitions to try to make a different kind of album and really stretch and push ourselves to make something new,\u201d bassist Colin Caulfield told us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think we just did not anticipate that it would be a really, really big challenge to agree with those new guidelines, or that kind of exploded approach to the band. We were still, in a certain way, in that mode of, \u2018Everything\u2019s good,\u2019 and then that\u2019s when things really sneak up. You\u2019re not expecting it. And then resentments build\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frontman Zachary Cole Smith added: \u201cRelationships take work and some vigilance. We left making \u2018Deceiver\u2019 saying, \u2018Let\u2019s do that again!\u2019 And maybe we would have, but being in a band is tough. I think for a lot of people the music just shows up on their phone, and they\u2019re, like, \u2018Cool,\u2019 and they\u2019ll listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s not a tonne of transparency about all that goes into making the sausage, there are so many decisions and so much money and time\u2026 It\u2019s daunting. You make it on spec, like, \u2018I hope people like this,\u2019 and you kind of put all your eggs in that basket.
