Y’know, the one with a swashbuckling 1,153bhp and 1,475lb ft from three electric motors, plus fake V8 noises? Well, now there’s a new, entry-level variant, which turns down the volume. Slightly.

The aforementioned GT 4-Door Coupe was, of course, the top spec ‘63’ variant. Joining that car, and the middling ‘55’, is this new baby ‘53’ variant. We say baby lightly, because it still boasts 537bhp and 590lb ft – but can only call on a miserly two electric motors.

That max power figure is on overboost, with 362bhp available in everyday driving, and the electric motor on the front axle only kicks in when required for all-wheel drive.

To ensure there’s absolutely no fooling anyone as to which one you’ve bought, it also trades the 63’s artificial V8 soundtrack for a straight-six song, complete with simulated gearchanges, inspired by the 3.0-litre inline-six from the Merc-AMG E53 Coupe.

Otherwise, it’s pretty much as you were. Zero to 62mph is seen off in 3.5 seconds (versus 2.4 seconds in the 63), top speed is limited to 143mph, or 155mph (versus 186mph) with the optional AMG Driver’s Package. So yeah, still plenty quick enough.

But its real trump card is its range, boasting an official figure of 503 miles (versus the 63’s 432 miles) thanks to its 106kWh battery. Another EV where less is more?

Meanwhile 800V electrical architecture and 600kW charging capability allows for 332 miles of added range in just 10 minutes. It also comes with a full party bag of tricks, including adaptive suspension, a standard active rear spoiler, and an optional active rear diffuser.

Prices on the continent kick off from €115,430 (around £99,000), with it due to go on sale in Germany next week.
