The court found that Suno\u2019s use of the songs was in breach of both the German and US copyright law.<\/p>\n<p>Suno will now need to pay damages to GEMA, although the sum has not yet been confirmed. The ruling also means that other AI companies must now pay to license any music from GEMA\u2019s repertoire going forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the Chamber made one thing crystal clear: AI models built on stolen intellectual property have no protection under the law,\u201d said GEMA\u2019s CEO Dr Tobias Holzm\u00fcller after the legal victory (via <em>Reuters<\/em>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Congratulations to our friends at GEMA on securing a significant victory in their copyright case against AI music generator Suno. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an important step in ensuring that music creators\u2019 rights are respected and that innovation supports rather than undermines human creativity. pic.twitter.com\/6SVBqDqCDS<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PRS for Music (@PRSforMusic) July 31, 2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAI service providers must pay for licenses rather than helping themselves to our members\u2019 works free of charge. Today, the court\u2019s verdict has significantly strengthened Europe\u2019s position as a cultural centre,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>GEMA Board chairman Dr Ralf Weigand shared: \u201cThis ruling sends a powerful international message: creativity has value, and creators\u2019 rights must be respected in the age of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this decision, GEMA has set an important precedent not only for its more than 100,000 members, but for creators worldwide. The fact that we can now enforce our rights in countries including the United States gives creators hope and confidence at a time of profound technological transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In light of the decision, Suno has said it does not agree with the court\u2019s decision and will be looking into making an appeal (as per <em>MusicTech<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The latest ruling comes on the heels of another legal battle GEMA has been involved in. Last November, the court again ruled in its favour, after it alleged that ChatGPT operator OpenAI had violated European copyright laws.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As for Suno, in 2024, Warner and fellow major music labels Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group filed lawsuits against the company for copyright violations of \u201can almost unimaginable scale\u201d. The push for change comes as a study conducted last year revealed that 97 per cent of people \u201ccan\u2019t tell the difference\u201d between real and AI music.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div music generator Suno has lost a copyright infringement lawsuit to German licensing agency GEMA.<\/p>\n<p>Filed in January 2025, the filing saw GEMA argue that Suno was using songs in its repertoire \u2013 including Boney M\u2019s \u2018Daddy Cool\u2019, Lou Bega\u2019s \u2018Mambo No. 5\u2019, and Alphaville\u2019s \u2018Forever Young\u2019 \u2013 to train its AI models, without obtaining any licenses or paying the songwriters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The decision was handed down on Friday (July 31) by the Munich Regional Court, and ruled that the AI platform unlawfully obtained, processed and reproduced music that was represented by GEMA. The court found that Suno\u2019s use of the songs was in breach of both the German and US copyright law.<\/p>\n<p>Suno will now need to pay damages to GEMA, although the sum has not yet been confirmed. Today, the court\u2019s verdict has significantly strengthened Europe\u2019s position as a cultural centre,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>GEMA Board chairman Dr Ralf Weigand shared: \u201cThis ruling sends a powerful international message: creativity has value, and creators\u2019 rights must be respected in the age of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this decision, GEMA has set an important precedent not only for its more than 100,000 members, but for creators worldwide. The fact that we can now enforce our rights in countries including the United States gives creators hope and confidence at a time of profound technological transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In light of the decision, Suno has said it does not agree with the court\u2019s decision and will be looking into making an appeal (as per <em>MusicTech<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The latest ruling comes on the heels of another legal battle GEMA has been involved in. Last November, the court again ruled in its favour, after it alleged that ChatGPT operator OpenAI had violated European copyright laws.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As for Suno, in 2024, Warner and fellow major music labels Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group filed lawsuits against the company for copyright violations of \u201can almost unimaginable scale\u201d.
