\n\tCo-written with Roxie Dean (Lee Ann Womack\u2019s fellow 2001 hit \u201cWhy They Call It Falling\u201d) and Sonny Tillis (Trace Adkins, Billy Currington, Lee Greenwood, Reba\u00a0McEntire, Ricky\u00a0Skaggs), the bright midtempo song embraced a romantic obsession with a chorus built around a thought chain: the singer\u2019s mind progresses from thoughts of rain through several links to thoughts about angels and, ultimately, thoughts \u201cabout you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tProduced by Keith Stegall (Alan Jackson, Zac Brown Band), \u201cAngels\u201d featured O\u2019Neal\u2019s husband, Rodney Good, as a backing vocalist. Its August reign came the same month as the one-year anniversary of their marriage, and the anniversary of her chart debut with \u201cThere Is No Arizona,\u201d which became her first No. 1 single.<\/p>\n

\n\tBoth \u201cArizona\u201d and \u201cAngels\u201d were nominated in 2002 for best country song at the Grammy Awards, making O\u2019Neal the first female to double up in that category since Donna Fargo in 1973.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs \u201cAngels\u201d hovered over the genre, O\u2019Neal accompanied McEntire, Martina McBride, Sara Evans and Carolyn Dawn Johnson on the 25-date Girls Night Out Tour, the first country arena package to feature five women.<\/p>\n

\n\tO\u2019Neal revisited \u201cWhen I Think About Angels\u201d in a 2020 recording with McBride, and she reimagined \u201cArizona\u201d in a 2025 collaboration with The Isaacs. She also issued a new album, Gypsum<\/em>, on Jan. 23, 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
