[Laughs] Johnny [Marr] was a night-owl so sometimes we\u2019d work late,\u201d he told us. \u201cThere was no messing around in the studio, but that was the one night we let our hair down \u2013 Andy [Rourke] knew all the basslines to Spinal Tap songs and would play them at the drop of a hat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Street then discussed whether he would work with Morrissey again, following the pair\u2019s dispute over royalties after the producer helmed his 1988 debut solo album, \u2018Viva Hate\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I think so,\u201d he told <em>NME<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s well-documented that he\u2019s said some dubious things in recent years, but because of our long-term past relationship \u2013 The Smiths gave me my first big break \u2013 I feel a certain loyalty to him so if he asked, I would be interested.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2234180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2234180\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2234180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/The-Smiths-The-Queen-Is-Dead.jpg\" alt=\"Best Reissue\" width=\"1000\" height=\"635\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2234180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Smiths \u2013\u00a0\u2018The Queen Is Dead\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Morrissey recently started selling new versions of The Smiths\u2019 iconic merchandise, but with his name on the items instead. The T-shirt designs are based on the official artwork for \u2018Meat Is Murder\u2019 and \u2018The Queen Is Dead\u2019, with Morrissey\u2019s name replacing the group\u2019s logo.<\/p>\n<p>This spring,\u00a0the singer claimed responsibility for the initial idea for the photo of The Smiths taken outside Salford Lads Club in Greater Manchester \u2013 which was used on the inner-sleeve of \u2018The Queen Is Dead\u2019. He said it was \u201csolely my idea, to which as usual the other three initially viewed as more unnecessary Morrissey lunacy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Morrissey also shared another statement\u00a0at the time, in an attempt to correct\u00a0Johnny Marr\u00a0on the history of the band and Rough Trade.<\/p>\n<p>This followed\u00a0Morrissey sharing his intention to sell off all his business interests in The Smiths last autumn, saying he was\u00a0\u201cburnt out by any and all connections\u201d to his former bandmates.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johnny Marr on his first ever solo best of 'Spirit Power', his book 'Marrs Guitars' and more\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7S27KOzAABY?start=340&amp;feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>A year earlier,\u00a0Morrissey had claimed that Marr now owned all of the \u201ctrademark rights and Intellectual Property\u201d of The Smiths, and could therefore tour as a band without him.<\/p>\n<p>The long-running feud between the pair reignited this summer, when Morrissey launched a lengthy attack on Marr.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2024,\u00a0Morrissey hit out at Marr for turning down a \u201clucrative\u201d Smiths comeback tour, alleging that the guitarist \u201cignored\u201d the offer.<\/p>\n<p>The singer later said he was keen to embark on a reunion trek\u00a0as a \u201cthank you for those who have listened for what suddenly feels like a lifetime\u201d. He denied that he wanted to tour because of any \u201cemotional attachment\u201d to Marr.<\/p>\n<p>Marr will release his new solo album, \u2018The Age Of Everything\u2019, on October 2. [Laughs] Johnny [Marr] was a night-owl so sometimes we\u2019d work late,\u201d he told us. \u201cThere was no messing around in the studio, but that was the one night we let our hair down \u2013 Andy [Rourke] knew all the basslines to Spinal Tap songs and would play them at the drop of a hat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Street then discussed whether he would work with Morrissey again, following the pair\u2019s dispute over royalties after the producer helmed his 1988 debut solo album, \u2018Viva Hate\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I think so,\u201d he told <em>NME<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s well-documented that he\u2019s said some dubious things in recent years, but because of our long-term past relationship \u2013 The Smiths gave me my first big break \u2013 I feel a certain loyalty to him so if he asked, I would be interested.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2234180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2234180\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2234180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/The-Smiths-The-Queen-Is-Dead.jpg\" alt=\"Best Reissue\" width=\"1000\" height=\"635\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2234180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Smiths \u2013\u00a0\u2018The Queen Is Dead\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Morrissey recently started selling new versions of The Smiths\u2019 iconic merchandise, but with his name on the items instead. The T-shirt designs are based on the official artwork for \u2018Meat Is Murder\u2019 and \u2018The Queen Is Dead\u2019, with Morrissey\u2019s name replacing the group\u2019s logo.<\/p>\n<p>This spring,\u00a0the singer claimed responsibility for the initial idea for the photo of The Smiths taken outside Salford Lads Club in Greater Manchester \u2013 which was used on the inner-sleeve of \u2018The Queen Is Dead\u2019. He said it was \u201csolely my idea, to which as usual the other three initially viewed as more unnecessary Morrissey lunacy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Morrissey also shared another statement\u00a0at the time, in an attempt to correct\u00a0Johnny Marr\u00a0on the history of the band and Rough Trade.<\/p>\n<p>This followed\u00a0Morrissey sharing his intention to sell off all his business interests in The Smiths last autumn, saying he was\u00a0\u201cburnt out by any and all connections\u201d to his former bandmates.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johnny Marr on his first ever solo best of 'Spirit Power', his book 'Marrs Guitars' and more\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7S27KOzAABY?start=340&amp;feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>A year earlier,\u00a0Morrissey had claimed that Marr now owned all of the \u201ctrademark rights and Intellectual Property\u201d of The Smiths, and could therefore tour as a band without him.<\/p>\n<p>The long-running feud between the pair reignited this summer, when Morrissey launched a lengthy attack on Marr.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2024,\u00a0Morrissey hit out at Marr for turning down a \u201clucrative\u201d Smiths comeback tour, alleging that the guitarist \u201cignored\u201d the offer.<\/p>\n<p>The singer later said he was keen to embark on a reunion trek\u00a0as a \u201cthank you for those who have listened for what suddenly feels like a lifetime\u201d. He denied that he wanted to tour because of any \u201cemotional attachment\u201d to Marr.<\/p>\n<p>Marr will release his new solo album, \u2018The Age Of Everything\u2019, on October 2.
