\n\tSoundgarden drummer Matt Cameron says fans may soon get to hear the last recordings late singer Chris Cornell made with the band. In this week\u2019s episode of the Let There Be Talk<\/em> podcast with Dean Delray, Cameron revealed that the surviving members of the group are mixing down tracks recorded with producer Terry Date \u2014\u00a0who helmed the band\u2019s 1989 Louder Than Love<\/em> and 1991\u2019s Badmotorfinger<\/em> \u2014\u00a0for what he said will be an eight-track LP.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019d been sending demos back and forth since, like, 2013, \u201914, something like that. I would send\u00a0Chris\u00a0some stuff. He would rearrange it, make a song out of it\u2026,\u201d Cameron said of the unnamed tracks the singer worked on before his death by suicide at 52 in a Detroit hotel room in May 2017. \u201cI sent him three tracks, and then he would sing on top of the instrumentals that I\u2019d written and rearrange them and everything. And then we started getting together in, like, 2015, \u201916 at a couple of different studios, so we were preparing to make another album before that last tour in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCameron said the band, which also includes guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd, recorded all their rehearsals and wrote a \u201cbunch of stuff\u201d together and that the album will feature some material from their live rehearsals on which Cornell played guitar. \u201cThen we\u2019re using the vocals from these demos that he put together, with the music that we had written together \u2026 just kind of building on top of that,\u201d he said of the sessions he and Thayil have discussed a number of times over the past few years.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe mixing is taking place at the moment with Joe Barresi (Avenged Sevenfold, Bad Religion), with Cameron noting that the relatively short tracklist features \u201cpretty much all there is with vocals,\u201d though Thayil may work with some leftover instrumentals. \u201cSo maybe we\u2019ll do some new stuff together,\u201d he said. \u201cWhich would be fine by me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCameron said there is no release date yet, so for now the trio are just working to get the project over the finish line. \u201cAnd then hopefully we\u2019ll have a better idea what\u2019s gonna come next. We\u2019re just taking it one step at a time because it\u2019s been kind of a long process just to get to here,\u201d he added. The drummer said he\u2019s been listening to those demos since the band recorded them and he revealed that there are three or four \u201creally, really strong songs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to getting it done and putting it out there. And I\u2019m hoping the reaction won\u2019t be too intense for people, but I know that it will be because it has been for us,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I think at this stage of the game, we\u2019ve been listening to it so much that I think we\u2019ve built a little bit of a callus up to the emotional side of it, and we\u2019re just trying to get all the tracks. And it sounds like Soundgarden.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this month, Blabbermouth<\/em> reported Thayil described the process as \u201cvery untraditional. It\u2019s sideway and forward and backward,\u201d likening it to a \u201cforensic\u201d deep-dive. \u201cWe have to look at what we have and explore what we got, what it needs, and to kind of fill in the holes and complete it,\u201d Thayil said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re completing it. We\u2019re down a man, so it\u2019s three of us trying to do \u2026 But fortunately, we\u2019re building on the things that\u00a0Chrisdid\u00a0complete, so we\u2019re able to look at that and say, \u2018Okay, here\u2019s his vocal. Here\u2019s what it needs. Here\u2019s his guitar part.\u2019 And it\u2019s working. It\u2019s working great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCornell died after Soundgarden performed at Detroit\u2019s Fox Theatre on May 17, 2017 during the band\u2019s second phase, which kicked off in 2010 after they reunited following a 13-year hiatus.<\/p>\n
