CREDIT: Press<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The paintings of the members inside the trench coat were done by the frontman, and are the latest of his artworks to be made available to the public, following two of his paintings being put on display at the Royal Academy\u2019s Summer Exhibition until August 23.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Back in 2023, Yard Act spoke to <em>NME<\/em> about their hometown residency at the Brudenell Social Club, where they were joined by the likes of Nish Kumar, CMAT and Phill Jupitus \u2013 and all came together to cover Chumbawamba\u2018s hit \u2018Tubthumping\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about their then-upcoming single dedicated to the frontman\u2019s trench coat, and how Smith frequently wearing it made it start to \u201csymbolise\u201d something to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[\u2018Trench Coat Museum\u2019] basically about ego, perception, ownership and recognition. I started writing it when I realised what the trench coat had come to symbolise,\u201d the singer said. \u201cThere were multiple people who had gone to fancy dress parties as me, wearing just a trench coat and glasses. That\u2019s funny itself, but I realised how much I loved it but that it had become a cloak to protect me so that I could be this amplified and more obscene version of myself for performance. He was like, \u2018Are you wearing my coat?\u2019 and I said, \u2018Yeah, it\u2019s funny isn\u2019t it?\u2019 It was a joke and a trope of what post-punk is. I loved it and felt more confident,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was also thinking a lot about why I was obsessed with my own image. I was looking at pictures of myself and seeing what other people see. They see this character and cartoon that I leant into. When you do, you get more out of it. That\u2019s the thing about pop culture: oversized characters get more attention. I was ready to step away from that because I didn\u2019t want to be trapped by it. We have a lot more to give than we\u2019ve given so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You\u2019re Gonna Need A Little Music\u2019 dropped earlier this month and was given a four-star review from <em>NME<\/em>, which described the band\u2019s third album as seeing them \u201chone in on their truest form\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYard Act have never been short of stuff to say, but after all is said and done, perhaps the titular takeaway is to open up our own ears,\u201d it read. \u201cIt\u2019s a mantra that our hot-headed, opinionated world could do with acting on, whether that\u2019s taking some occasional advice from Janey \u2013 or simply just soaking in \u2018a little music\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the release, the band also spoke to <em>NME<\/em> about the message behind the songs and their take on the current political climate in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have many issues with [new PM Andy Burnham stepping in to take over from Keir Starmer],\u201d Smith shared. \u201cI would not be celebrating, but I absolutely know with certainty that whilst we live in a first-past-the-post system \u2013 and whilst Zack Polanski is not polling [well enough] \u2013 I would do anything to keep fascists out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe division of the left is harrowing. We can\u2019t agree on anything. I do not see Andy Burnham as a shining beacon of hope, but I do see Nigel Farage as a dark, dark entity that must be struck out at all costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yard Act aren\u2019t the first band to team up with Blue Flowers for a collaboration \u2013 back in 2024 Pete Doherty\u00a0and\u00a0Carl Barat\u00a0designed two new Libertines-inspired jackets exclusively for the menswear band\u2019s early days: a trench coat.<\/p>\n<p>Singer James Smith became synonymous with the look during the band\u2019s first few releases, always sporting the outerwear during live shows and photoshoots. I started writing it when I realised what the trench coat had come to symbolise,\u201d the singer said. \u201cThere were multiple people who had gone to fancy dress parties as me, wearing just a trench coat and glasses. That\u2019s funny itself, but I realised how much I loved it but that it had become a cloak to protect me so that I could be this amplified and more obscene version of myself for performance. I loved it and felt more confident,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was also thinking a lot about why I was obsessed with my own image. I was looking at pictures of myself and seeing what other people see. They see this character and cartoon that I leant into. When you do, you get more out of it. That\u2019s the thing about pop culture: oversized characters get more attention. I was ready to step away from that because I didn\u2019t want to be trapped by it. We have a lot more to give than we\u2019ve given so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You\u2019re Gonna Need A Little Music\u2019 dropped earlier this month and was given a four-star review from <em>NME<\/em>, which described the band\u2019s third album as seeing them \u201chone in on their truest form\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYard Act have never been short of stuff to say, but after all is said and done, perhaps the titular takeaway is to open up our own ears,\u201d it read. \u201cIt\u2019s a mantra that our hot-headed, opinionated world could do with acting on, whether that\u2019s taking some occasional advice from Janey \u2013 or simply just soaking in \u2018a little music\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the release, the band also spoke to <em>NME<\/em> about the message behind the songs and their take on the current political climate in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have many issues with [new PM Andy Burnham stepping in to take over from Keir Starmer],\u201d Smith shared. \u201cI would not be celebrating, but I absolutely know with certainty that whilst we live in a first-past-the-post system \u2013 and whilst Zack Polanski is not polling [well enough] \u2013 I would do anything to keep fascists out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe division of the left is harrowing. We can\u2019t agree on anything.
