Ahead of the Aug. 7 release of Therapy at the Club<\/em>, the British R&B trio offers Billboard<\/em> a closer look at the 16-song project, which includes previously released songs \u201cLeak It,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Break Her Heart\u201d and the title track, as well as yet-to-be-released songs \u201cFloating,\u201d \u201cCry Ugly,\u201d \u201cHaterBooth,\u201d \u201cMiss U Missing Me\u201d and \u201cSmall Doses.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBehind the music, though, there was a creative shift that the trio says happened long before the tracklist was finalized.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking with Billboard<\/em>, FLO shares that making Therapy at the Club <\/em>meant becoming more outspoken in the studio, even when it felt uncomfortable. Instead of holding back their feedback, the group said they learned to trust their instincts and advocate for what they wanted the album to sound and feel like.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt felt really good,\u201d member Stella Quaresma says. \u201cI think that it comes to a point where you just have to rip the Band-Aid off. Some things can feel confrontational or uncomfortable, but we\u2019re all in the room to make a great song.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat mindset, they explain, changed the entire creative process.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt feels good to just say how you feel and say, \u2018I don\u2019t like that,\u2019 or \u2018try that,’\u201d Quaresma continued, adding that speaking up left the group \u201cin a much better place creatively.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe confidence seems to have carried over into every corner of the album-making process. Compared to debut album Access All Areas<\/em>, which introduced the trio\u2019s rich harmonies and nostalgic R&B influences, FLO says Therapy at the Club<\/em> reflects who they are as both artists and women.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt definitely feels more grown,\u201d Ren\u00e9e Downer says. \u201cWe have grown up. We have been heavily involved in the album. We immersed ourselves into it\u2026 figuring out what needed healing and figuring out what we wanted to talk about. It feels very honest and more real.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat evolution extends beyond the songwriting. While discussing the cinematic music video for their song \u201cLeak It,\u201d the group candidly admitted they hadn\u2019t been \u201c100% happy\u201d with some of their previous music videos, making it a priority for this era\u2019s visuals to better showcase the ambition of the songs.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe knew that song had to have a big moment and a big video,\u201d Quaresma states. Downer chimes in as well, adding, \u201cYou want to make the video an accurate representation of the music. If the music feels big, it\u2019s always kind of sad if the video doesn\u2019t match it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe album arrives after a breakout stretch for FLO: Access All Areas<\/em> earned the triad a Grammy nomination for best progressive R&B album earlier this year. <\/p>\n

\n\tIf Access All Areas<\/em> introduced FLO to the world, Therapy at the Club<\/em> appears poised to show listeners a more self-assured version of the trio: one that\u2019s no longer afraid to speak up, both inside and outside the recording studio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
