070 Shake\u2019s exploratory spirit has made her one of contemporary music\u2019s most compelling shape-shifters. But she\u2019s far more interested in making things than explaining them.\u00a0<\/h3>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know that song won a Brit Award. That\u2019s pretty dope.\u201d Danielle Balbuena, better known as 070 Shake, and I are talking about \u201cEscapism\u201d. The Raye feature, not the reality-bending kind. A pop song so omnipresent that avoiding it would have required genuine effort, it climbed the Billboard Hot 100, topped charts around the world and took home Song of the Year at the 2024 Brit Awards. Yet somehow, Shake had no idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was friends with Raye before we ever made music together, we used to hang out a lot and play cards,\u201d she remembers. \u201cOne day she was like, \u2018Oh, I want you to do something on my album\u2019, and she just played me a couple of songs. I guess I got a good ear, because I chose [\u201cEscapism\u201d] to do a vocal on, and yeah, it ended up getting a Brit Award, supposedly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shake\u2019s nonchalant reaction to the song\u2019s success encapsulates quite perfectly what a conversation with the New Jersey-born-and-bred artist feels like. Borrowing her moniker from the ZIP code of the New Jersey collective she emerged from in 2016, 070 Shake has spent the past decade becoming one of music\u2019s hardest artists to pin down. A sonic chameleon, the 29-year-old Gemini has built a career on bending genres to her will, moving from rap to electronic textures, classical inflections to pop-leaning indie hooks, while confidently resisting the industry\u2019s instinct to categorise her. For her, creativity sits firmly as a north star, not something shaped by commercial pressure or music\u2019s more suffocating boxes.<\/p>\n

Along the way, she has kept her private life firmly out of frame, allowing the work to lead. She does not rush the process and has carved out a path to the top that feels entirely self-directed. Beneath it all, she turns out to be remarkably chill.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re speaking between London and Paris during Europe\u2019s first heatwave of the year, where Shake has been spending much of her time. \u201cI\u2019ve just been trying to stay inside because it\u2019s been so bad. It\u2019s dangerously hot outside,\u201d she smiles.<\/p>\n

On her horizon sits a new single, arriving the day after our call \u2013 \u201cThanks for the reminder, I do have something dropping tomorrow,\u201d she laughs \u2013 titled \u201cBaby Driver\u201d, created in collaboration with a video game, PUBG: Battlegrounds<\/em>. Then there are a handful of undisclosed \u201cside projects\u201d, and a new album slowly but surely taking shape. The follow-up to 2024\u2019s critically acclaimed Petrichor<\/em> is currently being brewed in the French capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s fun. I love it,\u201d she says when I ask whether the creative process is an enjoyable one, or if she occasionally finds herself wandering into tortured poet territory. \u201cI don\u2019t know what this feels like, but I imagine, metaphorically, it\u2019s like having a baby in the womb. I\u2019m sure there\u2019s a sense of relief once you have the baby, but it\u2019s also now the world\u2019s. The process of making [an album], though, that\u2019s just yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since breaking through in 2016, first with a signing to Kanye West\u2019s GOOD Music and then opening for The 1975 on the North American leg of their tour, Shake has assembled a body of work that places her in conversation with some of contemporary music\u2019s most influential figures. From lending her voice to Ye\u2019s 2018 hit \u201cViolent Crimes\u201d to collaborations with Madonna, JT, Nas, Little Simz, Ty Dolla $ign and Fred again.., among others, alongside her three albums \u2013 2020\u2019s Modus Vivendi<\/em>, 2022\u2019s You Can\u2019t Kill Me<\/em> and 2024\u2019s Petrichor<\/em> \u2013 her sound is at its best when experimentation takes precedence and creative possibility is given room to breathe. That, ultimately, is Shake\u2019s MO.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get really bored of things, so I\u2019m always trying to find new ways to [approach my sound] that\u2019s fun for me,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting that every artist has their own reasoning for making music. A big part of mine is just being experimental, searching for something, finding new ways to do the same thing, and just having fun with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

So where does she look for inspiration as this new album begins to take shape? \u201cTo be honest, I haven\u2019t really been listening to music,\u201d she admits. \u201cSometimes I just won\u2019t listen to music, and I\u2019ll just be in the world that\u2019s right there with me, you know. I\u2019ve been walking around and observing people, looking at [Paris\u2019] architecture and just existing in life. I spend a lot of time not escaping reality, but forcing something onto my reality that wouldn\u2019t be there naturally. I think the biggest inspiration sometimes is the world around you.\u201d<\/p>\n

People-watching and admiring beautiful old buildings. Paris remains one of the best places to indulge in both. \u201cAbsolutely,\u201d she affirms. The city\u2019s creative undercurrent is also woven into Shake\u2019s plans as she revives a long-held ambition: scoring her first film. The project remains tightly under wraps when we speak, but is already well underway. \u201cI\u2019m working with one of my good friends here in Paris, and it\u2019s his debut,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel really lucky that he would trust me because it\u2019s also my first time. It\u2019s been such a learning experience and so magical for me. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve always wanted to do, so I\u2019m really grateful that I\u2019ve had the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that we\u2019re already talking silver screens, is there any chance fans might get an acting debut too? \u201cNah, I\u2019ll let my girl handle that,\u201d she laughs. Perks of dating Lily-Rose Depp, I guess. \u201cI\u2019m probably gonna stay on the music side. I\u2019d be a terrible actor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fashion, however, is a world she\u2019s more than happy to share with her beau. Last December, Shake was announced as one of Jonathan Anderson\u2019s new ambassadors for Dior, following their previous collaboration at LOEWE that saw her become a front-row fixture across the Northern Irish designer\u2019s runway shows and campaigns. \u201cI\u2019m so lucky and honoured that they think that I\u2019m, you know, worthy to be in this world,\u201d she says with a laugh. \u201cClothes and fashion are parallel to all art forms. Being able to express myself through that medium is pretty cool. I love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is a magnetic ease to 070 Shake that can be difficult to articulate. TikTok would probably chalk it up to aura. Fair enough. But perhaps it stems from the fierce protection of her inner-life, and the patience and self-possession with which she approaches her craft, qualities that feel increasingly rare in an industry built on constant visibility. Rather than forcing meaning, inspiration or even identity, Shake seems content to let things reveal themselves in their own time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really acknowledge [fame],\u201d she tells me when the subject of stardom comes up. \u201cI don\u2019t think that I am [famous]. In the context of Hannah Montana, I\u2019m more like Miley. Just chilling and living my regular life.\u201d Outside of press tours and album cycles, it takes someone like Miley Cyrus to coax Shake out of her Parisian cocoon and in front of a camera to speak to a journalist about what she\u2019s been up to.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think to, you know, grow up in the public eye, and be in a pool of sharks and be resilient, and be brave enough to be yourself through it all,\u201d she reflects on the pop mastermind\u2019s legacy. \u201cI\u2019ve always been inspired by her, and by the example that she\u2019s been to artists and to people in general. I\u2019ve always just been a big fan. She\u2019s awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Much like Malibu Miley in her own Hannah Montana<\/em> analogy, Shake is a self-proclaimed lover of the City of Angels. It\u2019s a sentiment you don\u2019t hear often amid a sea of jaded artists who seem to resent the very industry tied to its geography. \u201cIt\u2019s because the real ones know what\u2019s up,\u201d she shares. \u201cI love the history and the culture. It\u2019s just a beautiful place. I\u2019m over here in Paris dreaming right now, talking about LA,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI really love that Joni Mitchell song, \u201cCalifornia\u201d. Don\u2019t get me wrong, Paris is one of my favourite cities in the world, but when you land in California after being away for so long, it really resonates.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith LA, you can\u2019t be pretentious about it, you got to do all the fun stuff and not be too cool, you know,\u201d she says. Like, going to see Miley Cyrus\u2019 brand new star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the first person born in the nineties to ever have one? \u201cHell yeah. That\u2019s so cool. Congrats to her.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
