The truth is, I\u2019ve been learning how to live with Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cParkinson\u2019s is different for everyone, and it can be unpredictable. Some days I\u2019m so tired I can\u2019t get the day moving at all. Once seated, I could feel as though I had been swallowed by the chair and might remain there permanently, like a guest who had badly overstayed her welcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually, there were periods when I could not walk without considerable help. My family and I knew that something more was going on. After an extensive evaluation at the Mayo Clinic, I was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson\u2019s disease is a neurodegenerative condition that affects the brain, nervous system, and muscle control.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Simon has been receiving medication and treatment; but said the condition also comes with episodes of anxiety, depression, and apathy.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>She continued: \u201cThe apathy is particularly strange. You can find yourself lying there like a starfish drying in the sun, arms pointing in all directions, while nothing inside is telling you to get up, read, watch, write, sing, call someone, or do much of anything at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat has been one of the hardest things to explain. It is not simply sadness or laziness. It is as though the part of the brain that sends out invitations to participate in life has temporarily misplaced the guest list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon also said she had received treatment for basal cell carcinoma, a common type of cancer that starts in the top layer of skin, on her face. She said it was removed but the surgery affected her appearance and made her more self-conscious about being seen in public.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI have always been more critical of my appearance than anyone else could possibly imagine (check out the irony of having written \u2018You\u2019re So Vain\u2019), and this gave my inner critic quite a lot of new material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite her health issues, she confirmed that she has continued to record new music with a new album, \u2018Comes In Waves\u2019, set for release next month.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI do not consider Parkinson\u2019s a gift or a blessing. It is neither. It is difficult, frustrating, and sometimes frightening. I am still learning how to live with it and how to accept it without feeling that I have surrendered something essential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am still writing, singing, imagining, laughing, worrying, remembering, and occasionally getting trapped in an overstuffed chair. I am deeply grateful to my children, my family, my friends, my caregivers, and the medical professionals who have helped me through this. Simon has revealed that she has been diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease and cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The 83-year-old singer-songwriter, best known for classic hits like \u2018You\u2019re So Vain\u2019, \u2018Why\u2019 and James Bond theme \u2018Nobody Does It Better\u2019, said in a lengthy statement on Instagram that her most recent absence from the spotlight had been due to her ongoing health issues.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>She said: \u201cSo many people have written to me, kindly wondering about my relative silence, asking how I am and what I have been doing. The truth is, I\u2019ve been learning how to live with Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cParkinson\u2019s is different for everyone, and it can be unpredictable. Some days I\u2019m so tired I can\u2019t get the day moving at all. Once seated, I could feel as though I had been swallowed by the chair and might remain there permanently, like a guest who had badly overstayed her welcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually, there were periods when I could not walk without considerable help. My family and I knew that something more was going on. After an extensive evaluation at the Mayo Clinic, I was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson\u2019s disease is a neurodegenerative condition that affects the brain, nervous system, and muscle control.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Simon has been receiving medication and treatment; but said the condition also comes with episodes of anxiety, depression, and apathy.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>She continued: \u201cThe apathy is particularly strange. You can find yourself lying there like a starfish drying in the sun, arms pointing in all directions, while nothing inside is telling you to get up, read, watch, write, sing, call someone, or do much of anything at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat has been one of the hardest things to explain. It is not simply sadness or laziness. It is as though the part of the brain that sends out invitations to participate in life has temporarily misplaced the guest list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon also said she had received treatment for basal cell carcinoma, a common type of cancer that starts in the top layer of skin, on her face. She said it was removed but the surgery affected her appearance and made her more self-conscious about being seen in public.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI have always been more critical of my appearance than anyone else could possibly imagine (check out the irony of having written \u2018You\u2019re So Vain\u2019), and this gave my inner critic quite a lot of new material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite her health issues, she confirmed that she has continued to record new music with a new album, \u2018Comes In Waves\u2019, set for release next month.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI do not consider Parkinson\u2019s a gift or a blessing. It is neither. It is difficult, frustrating, and sometimes frightening. I am still learning how to live with it and how to accept it without feeling that I have surrendered something essential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am still writing, singing, imagining, laughing, worrying, remembering, and occasionally getting trapped in an overstuffed chair. I am deeply grateful to my children, my family, my friends, my caregivers, and the medical professionals who have helped me through this.
