When all 106 floors were completed in 2004, it was the world\u2019s tallest building. Since then, 10 other buildings have stretched even further into the sky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the center of the Taipei 101, suspended between the 82nd and 97th floors, is a 660-ton steel sphere. The sphere is 18 feet wide and can move up to five feet in any direction. The TMD acts as a counterbalance \u2014 if the building is pushed in one direction, gravity pulls the TMD in the opposite direction. Mass dampers don\u2019t need electricity or power of any sort to counteract the forces of nature on a structure; rather, they use physics and the movement of the building.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;padding: auto;margin-bottom: 20px\" class=\"singl-17f8713ef5af556ca69c558769e97cf8 singl-content\" id=\"singl-17f8713ef5af556ca69c558769e97cf8\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhilst our TMD has the namesake, it is actually not a strict TMD by definition. The name effectively communicates the concept,\u201d Rimpact\u2019s owner, Matt Shearn, told Singletracks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the Rimpact TMD is not technically a true tuned mass damper, but Shearn shared that the overall idea is the same. According to Shearn, the Rimpact TMD helps soften the energy transfer between an impact and the rider. The result is a smoother, less fatiguing ride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Designed to be neatly stashed away inside the fork\u2019s steerer tube, Rimpact\u2019s TMD features a 250g \u201cmass\u201d suspended between springs. This mass works similarly to the 660-ton sphere at Taipei 101, counteracting the bike\u2019s movement caused by impacts on the trail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The counteracting nature of the TMD absorbs those impacts rather than allowing them to be transferred to the handlebars and into the rider\u2019s body. But, rather than a true TMD that we\u2019d see in a bridge or building, Shearn said the Rimpact TMD is perhaps more like another product we\u2019re familiar with.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;padding: auto;margin-bottom: 20px\" class=\"singl-bcb9e28735ab052f3f484890c9ab900d singl-content\" id=\"singl-bcb9e28735ab052f3f484890c9ab900d\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike an airbag, the TMD slows the transfer of energy to the rider,\u201d he said. \u201cWith the device installed, the peak compression spikes the rider feels through the handlebar from each impact are lower, resulting in a more controlled and less fatiguing ride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rimpact is not the only brand offering a tuned mass damper for mountain bikes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericperformance.com\/?s=mass+damper&amp;post_type=product\">Eric Performance<\/a> offers mass dampers for the front and rear of the bike, mounted to the steerer tube and rear disc mount, respectively. Their device features \u201ca steel ball suspended by a precisely calibrated spring [to absorb] impacts and vibrations.\u201d The idea is similar to Rimpact\u2019s steel rod between two springs, with the main difference being the TMD\u2019s location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rimpact puts theirs in the steer tube. They do this for a couple of reasons. First, locating it in the steer tube puts it perfectly in line with the bike\u2019s head tube angle. Secondly, there is no risk of damaging it in a crash. And, lastly, our legs are much stronger than our arms. In a world where handlebars, wheels, and even frames claim to reduce the impact of trail chatter, will something like Rimpact\u2019s TMD actually create a noticeable difference?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly, Shearn says \u201cyes,\u201d but is realistic about the product.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFitting one and using it will subtly improve how the bike feels on an impact-by-impact basis, but the improvement stacks over a full run or a full day of laps,\u201d he claimed. \u201cBy the end of a bike park trip, enduro race or epic, you\u2019ll feel significantly fresher as a result of the TMD working continuously to chip away at the unwanted energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Single data points, or data \u201cin a vacuum,\u201d as Shearn described it, are somewhat irrelevant. Mountain biking doesn\u2019t take place in a vacuum or in any controlled setting \u2014 simply put, there is too much variance. The same impact on a trail can have different effects depending on speed and the exact spot of impact. Even a rider altering the pressure of their grip on the bars will show some variance.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;padding: auto;margin-bottom: 20px\" class=\"singl-64cf5d7b8369246c19772446a6a3d3c4 singl-content\" id=\"singl-64cf5d7b8369246c19772446a6a3d3c4\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, Shearn shared the results of a longer test Rimpact performed with the TMD. He said that over 120 test runs (all on the same course), using the TMD reduced the average lap time by 1 second per minute of trail time. So if a World Cup track stretches into race times of three minutes, ideally, racers using a Rimpact TMD should see a time reduction of three seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese findings have been corroborated by a number of the top teams on the DH World Cup circuit, and this is why so many racers choose the Rimpact TMD at the top level.\u201d And they do. Rimpact supports teams such as Commencal\/Muc-Off and Canyon DH.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-about-the-average-joe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about the average Joe?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These World Cup factory teams are staffed with professional mechanics to precisely set up a bike for the rider\u2019s and track\u2019s specific requirements. To be clear, a Rimpact TMD isn\u2019t a magic component that will fix bike setup. While he mentions that the TMD is agnostic to how well a bike is set up, it won\u2019t \u201cmake a poorly set up bike feel dialed.\u201d Shearn reminds Rimpact users that proper bike setup, such as suspension setup and running proper tire pressure, should still be a priority.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;padding: auto;margin-bottom: 20px\" class=\"singl-0d84e9c7b217a11705d8ecd4e9a9611f singl-content\" id=\"singl-0d84e9c7b217a11705d8ecd4e9a9611f\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You also don\u2019t need to be a professional mechanic to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimpactmtb.com\/tmd-installation-guide\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rimpactmtb.com\/tmd-installation-guide\">install the Rimpact TMD<\/a>. This is a brief overview, so definitely check out Rimpact\u2019s full installation guidelines. First, some checks: the steerer tube needs to be at least 180 mm, measured from the underside of the fork crown. Also, you will need to ensure that at least 2mm and no more than 7mm of steerer tube extends out the top of the stem\/last spacer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, you\u2019ll remove the star nut from the steerer tube (Rimpact recommends hammering it out with a long screwdriver). Unscrew the TMD\u2019s bottom cap, placing the TMD into the steerer tube from the top, with the bottom cap sitting roughly 4-5mm inside the bottom of the crown. If it sits outside the crown, remove the TMD and add a stem spacer. Once you are at Rimpact\u2019s recommended settings, torque the TMD top cap to 5Nm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you don\u2019t have to be a World Cup-level racer with a professional mechanic to benefit from Rimpact\u2019s TMD. According to Shearn, the \u201cTMD will provide the same performance improvement and energy reduction to all users, regardless of the rider on the bike.\u201d For a World Cup racer, the ideal outcome is a faster time.
