<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\tLaunched in 2024, MICAS occupies restored 17th-century Floriana fortifications, a former Knights-era poorhouse, and a gunpowder store in Malta\u2019s Baroque capital city Valletta. The museum was established with the aim to showcase international and Maltese contemporary art, while positioning Malta as an international destination for artistic exchange.<\/p>\n
\n\tRenovations of the historic complex\u2014overseen by the Florentine firm Ipostudio and co-funded by the Government of Malta and the European Union\u2014transformed more than 64,500 square feet of previously inaccessible space into galleries and public areas, bridging centuries-old architecture with contemporary museum design.<\/p>\n
\n\tThis expansive setting allows for quality exhibitions on an ambitious scale, with a program led by Artistic Director Edith Devaney, a former Senior Curator at London\u2019s Royal Academy of Arts for more than 20 years. The inaugural solo show of Joana Vasconcelos filled MICAS with the Portuguese artist\u2019s signature monumental sculptures, while a subsequent exhibition surveyed Milton Avery and his legacy through the work of contemporary artists such as Nicolas Party, Jonas Wood, and Andrew Cranston.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\tThe museum has also showcased the work of leading Maltese artists such as Caesar Attard, Vince Briffa, and Anton Grech, offering local artists a new international platform; and its outdoor sculpture garden features the work of Ugo Rondinone, Conrad Shawcross, and renowned Maltese artist Ray Pitr\u00e8 on permanent display.<\/p>\n
\n\tAt the opening, Prime Minister Robert Abela noted this pivotal moment for the island-nation: \u201cMICAS symbolizes the collective progress of this country, and now I believe it is part of the quality leap we have achieved in these last years, with a cultural platform for art, that sends out our message of faith in artists, who will document our history with their work.\u201d He added, \u201cThanks to this progress, Malta can truly be a center for artistic creativity in the Mediterranean, and a natural home for artists.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe indelible mark the museum has made on Malta in a relatively short time is reflected in the museum\u2019s leadership under Chief Executive Phyllis Muscat, who responded to decades-long calls by Maltese artists for a contemporary arts space, and has been involved in the project since 2013.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\u201cIt was a challenge for us to present what was essentially a start-up, with no history or a completed building, and from a small nation to boot,\u201d Muscat explained at the museum\u2019s opening. \u201cOur enthusiasm pushed us to develop this concept and build up interest in the circles of international art, and we achieved this concretely through the networks we built with international artists, curators, museums, foundations and art historians, and the acquisitions we made.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThough international in outlook, the museum\u2019s program is often embedded in the locale. American painter Reggie Burrows Hodges, whose solo exhibition \u201cMela\u201d is on view at MICAS through August 30th, is one of the latest examples. To create this entirely new body of work, Hodges relocated his studio to Malta for more than a year, allowing him to connect with the local milieu.<\/p>\n
\n\tComprising more than 30 large-scale paintings, \u201cMela\u201d extends Hodges\u2019 ongoing investigations of labor, power, and memory through Maltese histories. The monumental site-specific work Mammajamma<\/em> (2025) was inspired by the formal elements and scale of Caravaggio\u2019s 1608 masterpiece The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist in the Oratory of St. John\u2019s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.<\/p>\n \n\tAs part of Hodges\u2019 ongoing \u201cLabor\u201d series (2022\u2013\u2013), he considers the manual construction of Malta\u2019s rapidly developing built environment, while an accompanying sound installation is influenced by accounts of Neolithic music from past civilizations across Malta and Gozo.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWithout making the journey to Malta and spending time immersing myself in the culture, I wouldn\u2019t have had a shot at its richness. That would have been a real loss \u2013 not for Malta, but for me,\u201d Hodges reflected in a statement.<\/p>\n \n\tIn a similar spirit, the upcoming exhibition \u201cA New Life Force,\u201d opening in October 2026, will feature Nathana\u00eblle Herbelin, Kemi Onabul\u00e9, and Megan Rooney, each presenting new paintings inspired by Malta\u2019s culture, geography, and history, while responding to the museum\u2019s distinct architecture and light.<\/p>\n \n\tBeyond its exhibitions, the museum also serves as a center for global conversation and debate, with talks from exhibiting artists, as well as keynote lectures by Emeritus Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Timothy Rub and Professor and Head of the Art Department at London\u2019s Goldsmiths College Richard Noble.<\/p>\n \n\tLast month, MICAS hosted a two-day symposium on museum architecture, bringing together architects, historians, curators, museologists, and sociologists to examine how contemporary art institutions can inhabit historic sites while creating new forms of cultural and civic engagement.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/20_7fcdf0.jpg?w=400\")
