\n\tWhen Jigga announced the first two anniversary shows celebrating 30 years of Reasonable Doubt <\/em>and 25 years of The Blueprint<\/em> in March, there was an added layer of anticipation for Hov\u2019s return atop the rap pantheon, while breathing life into a genre with a dearth of superstars rising to prominence in the 2020s.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tAt 56, could this be the last time we see Jay take the Yankee Stadium stage and pull off a star-studded show of this magnitude? That thought seemed to play a role in the chaos that led to Sunday\u2019s Extra Innings madness, which saw unticketed fans rush the gates and cause a multi-hour delay.<\/p>\n
\n\tBillboard<\/em> spoke to three of Jay\u2019s closest collaborators: Young Guru, who met Hov in the late \u201990s and has served as his engineer and DJ for over two decades, longtime bassist Adam Blackstone and Jay\u2019s music director Omar Edwards for an inside look at how the Yankee Stadium mini-residency came together.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tAct I:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\tEdwards and Jay-Z began ideating in March while exchanging plans for the Yankee Stadium shows, but their focus largely remained on Jay\u2019s return to the stage in Philly as a headliner at Roots Picnic in May. When the calendar flipped to June, all eyes shifted to Yankee Stadium \u2014 or as Jay told GQ<\/em> when it comes to his motto for 2026, \u201call offense.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tThat text thread between Hov and Edwards quickly expanded to include Blackstone, Guru and Khirye Tyler (Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s music director). Edwards estimates there were \u201c30-40 edits\u201d of back-and-forth, with Jay before finally nailing the structure of the shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tDuring this time, Blackstone was locking down an all-star 10-piece band, forming an 18-piece string section and recruiting a horn arrangement that can learn three very different shows in a matter of weeks.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cAll of this is Jay\u2019s vision; we make suggestions. Jay gives a yes or no on things that he likes, and he comes with suggestions of what he would like to see,\u201d Guru says. \u201cBut once Jay makes a final decision, it\u2019s our job to go execute that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tOne of those suggestions came from The Roots\u2019 Questlove, who proposed to have night two to celebrate all three installments of The Blueprint <\/em>series. But Jay adapted the idea to focus on the much-beloved first installment, which turns 25 this September. <\/p>\n\n\tRehearsals began on June 18 and took place in New York, giving Jay and the entire team three weeks to perfect the show before the curtain dropped. The plan was to dedicate a week to each of the shows, but that didn\u2019t end up happening.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tYoung Guru points to the tedious process of figuring out the key of every song in the setlist, as well as drops to properly tie the narrative of the show together. Even having to chart all of the music for the horns and string section to read added another layer of challenges when planning.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThis was just extremely difficult, because it\u2019s three different shows back to back to back, where we wouldn\u2019t get another week of rehearsal before the next show,\u201d Guru adds.<\/p>\n
\n\tBy this point, Edwards was coordinating with various teams contributing to the show, whether that be with Jay\u2019s creative director Willo Perron, or with Gabriel Moses and Renell Medrano, who helmed the visuals projecting to the upper deck.<\/p>\n
\n\tJuly 10 crept up in a blink. It was a serene 75-degree night at Yankee Stadium, oozing with hype that outweighed even the World Series games hosted in The Bronx two years prior. Three decades after releasing his first LP, Jay took his victory lap at Yankee Stadium with a love letter to his fans, celebrating his years-in-the-making debut, which has long outlived its commercial performance at the time of its release (No. 23 peak on the Billboard 200).\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tJay once described RD<\/em> as the \u201crealest album\u201d of all-time, as he narrated his street tales and evolution as a Brooklyn hustler from Marcy Houses with dexterous raps. \u201cFriday night had a very retrospective fan moment where\u2026 it wasn\u2019t quiet, but it was very intentional,\u201d Blackstone reflects. \u201c[Fans] listening to the words, I felt people remembering where they were when he was given this game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tThe first surprise of the night came when Jay brought Beyonc\u00e9 out to fill in for Mary J. Blige on \u201cCan\u2019t Knock the Hustle,\u201d and then a hard stop was built into the setlist following \u201cPolitics as Usual.\u201d That got Adam Blackstone\u2019s antennas up that Jay had a few things to get off his chest with a freestyle, since a similar stop in the setlist was used in May at Roots Picnic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe transition called for a hard stop. So once that was built in, I was like, \u2018Uh oh, here we go,\u2019\u201d he recalls. Jay responded to the backlash for his business deal with Target, and then seemed to allege that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick \u2014 who never played in another game following the 2016 season where he took a knee during the national anthem for social injustice \u2014 reached a financial agreement with the NFL to remain silent on the matter going forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cBuddy took a check\/ I ain\u2019t even mad at him,\u201d Hov rapped. \u201cBut along with that check you have to sign a non-disparagement\/ I\u2019m the one they can\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tJay also sparred with The Notorious B.I.G. on the jumbotron for their majestic \u201cBrooklyn\u2019s Finest\u201d collaboration, which featured a refreshed arrangement with different classic Biggie instrumentals. Edwards reveals that \u201cHypnotize\u201d was originally there in place of the \u201cOne More Chance\u201d beat, until Hov made the call to swap them in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tNas joining Hov on stage drew the biggest pop of the night from the 45,000 Roc-A-Fella faithful in attendance, with a moment that rap fans couldn\u2019t imagine when the legendary duo were at each other\u2019s throats 25 years ago. That striking visual will live on long after both hip-hop deities hang up their mics for good.<\/p>\n\n\n

\n\tPlenty of other special guests also hit the stage, including Jay\u2019s daughter, Blue Ivy, who played the piano to \u201cFeelin\u2019 It,\u201d as well as \u201900s collaborators Alicia Keys and Memphis Bleek. But it was Jaz-O who provided Guru\u2019s favorite moment of night one, when he joined Hov for \u201cBring It On,\u201d and Jay gave his mentor his flowers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you\u2019re going to give anybody credit for me being on this stage tonight, give it to that man Jaz-O, right there,\u201d Jay saluted Jaz. A fellow Marcy Houses native, Jaz-O gave Jay an example of someone who could make it out through rap, and provided Hov with opportunities to sharpen his pen and follow in his footsteps. The two had a falling out in the early 2000, but eventually made their way back.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThat just touched my heart,\u201d Guru admits. \u201cI love that part of it, and it\u2019s very meaningful for people that have been following Jay from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tJust when fans thought the show was over, Keys showed up, with Hov then delivering an encore that was completely improvised. Guru jumped around Jay\u2019s discography with a mix of hits and deep cuts, hopping from The Dynasty<\/em>\u2019s \u201cChange the Game\u201d to \u201cDo It Again,\u201d as the duo leaned on over two decades of chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cThat part is unplanned. You never know when he\u2019s gonna do that,\u201d Guru explains. \u201cI just have to stay ready as someone who\u2019s been with him for so long. I never know if he\u2019s gonna just walk off stage \u2014\u00a0or I\u2019ve even gone to him at times and said, \u2018Hey should I plan this?\u2019 And he just says, \u2018Surprise me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAct II:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\tReasonable Doubt<\/em>\u2019s dark clouds were replaced on the second night by The Blueprint<\/em>\u2019s sunshine. By 2001, Jay evolved from losing 92 bricks into reigning as a Cristal-sipping superstar, and Blueprint<\/em>\u2019s acclaim (No. 9 on Billboard<\/em>\u2019s 100 Greatest Rap Albums list) and commercial dominance gave him a claim for the throne. Night two at Yankee Stadium served as a toast to his magnum opus.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cHe gave the blueprint of how to hustle out of what he had just been through in Reasonable Doubt<\/em>,\u201d Blackstone offers. \u201cNow we can evolve, grow up and make them dance. It\u2019s the same hustler\u2019s mentality with a different end goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\n\tBlackstone, who first worked with Jay-Z on his 2003 Fade to Black show, highlighted Jay bringing him and other members of the band to the front of the stage on night two for the triumphant \u201cU Don\u2019t Know.\u201d He says he\u2019s already sent out the Kodak moment to get framed, and will be hanging the image in the halls of his home soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tS\u2019YIEL<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\tThe night\u2019s crown jewel came when Eminem made a rare public appearance, reuniting with Jay-Z for \u201cRenegade,\u201d which has been debated ad nauseum by fans of the rap gods as far as which rap icon got the better of the other on the track. Decades later, that barbershop talk has spilled onto social media.<\/p>\n
\n\tWhile Blackstone had his reservations, the Detroit rap dignitary showing up to Yankee Stadium became a reality following a phone call with Em\u2019s manager Paul Rosenberg in June.<\/p>\n\n\n

\n\tThere was one notable omission from The Blueprint<\/em>\u2019s setlist, with no sign of \u201cTakeover.\u201d With Hov and Nas reconciling and Prodigy no longer here, the scathing diss track wasn\u2019t going to derail the mood that Saturday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a complete respect for Prodigy,\u201d Guru asserts of the exclusion. \u201cI\u2019m speaking to these gentlemen becoming very mature in their later ages, where what would have been done before is not going to be done now. It\u2019s just out of good taste, because Prodigy\u2019s not here anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tWhile Jay was able to sidestep \u201cTakeover,\u201d other aspects of The Blueprint<\/em> found 56-year-old Hov grappling with his 31-year-old self. Take \u201cGirls, Girls, Girls\u201d as an example, which found him shrewdly mixing in Destiny\u2019s Child\u2019s \u201cGirl\u201d and his Bey teamup \u201c\u201803 Bonnie & Clyde,\u201d showing his days of womanizing are long behind him.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s basically saying, \u2018I ain\u2019t that guy no more,\u2019\u201d Blackstone says. \u201cNow it\u2019s \u2018Young B cruising down the West Side\u2026\u2019 and I thought that was genius. As a lyricist, as a family man, he got to go home at night.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAct III:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\tBy the time Omar Edwards got back to his hotel, his phone was blowing up with texts trying to finalize the setlist for Extra Innings. Jay-Z entered the chat in the morning and everyone headed to the ballpark at 10:00 a.m. and got to work.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tThe setlist was finalized around noon, but there were still many moving parts when it came to the star-studded affair, which took the team until doors opened to rehearse and lock in. Teyana Taylor was added into the mix on Sunday, as the Harlem multi-hyphenate filled in for Mary J. Blige for \u201cCan\u2019t Knock the Hustle.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tAn intense few hours piecing the show together ensued, while the team found out Rihanna wanted to do just one verse and a chorus during her appearance for \u201cRun This Town\u201d and \u201cBitch Better Have My Money.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tBeyonc\u00e9 spinning the block for an imperial performance of \u201cDrunk in Love\u201d came together \u201cfairly fast,\u201d according to Blackstone. He notes that having Malice out past his usual bedtime to make the Clipse whole was also a day-of addition, as well as Fat Joe\u2019s and Jadakiss\u2019 \u201cNew York\u201d sans Ja Rule. \u201cIt was Summer Jam, all reincarnated. The Jay Z version of that,\u201d he says of the Extra Innings show that stretched into a two-day marathon.<\/p>\n
\n\tExtra Innings nearly didn\u2019t take place. With the hype surrounding the mini-residency\u2019s first two nights \u2014 and knowing this could be the last time Jay graces the Yankee Stadium stage for a long time, possibly ever \u2014 hysteria and prices went through the roof. A chaotic scene ensued outside the Stadium on 161st Street, as unticketed fans rushed the gates, forcing security to lock down the entire stadium\u2019s entry points, leaving even celebrities like A$AP Rocky and Charlamagne Tha God stranded outside for hours.<\/p>\n

\n\tBlackstone didn\u2019t realize the extent of the chaos in the streets, while Guru heralded Hov\u2019s calmness in the moment, and called Jay delaying the show to make sure everyone could eventually get to their seats safely \u201cone of the smartest things that he\u2019s ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve lived through City College experiences,\u201d he says, referencing the fatal 1991 stampede that occurred at a hip-hop-organized charity basketball game. \u201cSo Jay\u2019s concern with the safety of the people that were there was primary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tRavie B<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\tFans were eventually let in when the gates reopened after 11:00 p.m. ET, and Jay took the stage around 12:20 a.m. ET Monday morning. He apologized for the delay, while letting the Roc faithful know a special show was in store. Patience paid off for those who outlasted the multi-hour delay, as Hov delivered an unforgettable performance many will be telling their grandkids about, which wrapped up into the wee hours of Monday around 2:45 a.m. ET.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tJay weaved in and out of hits and reminded fans of deeper cuts that would be most artists best songs, while using his status of one of music\u2019s centrifugal forces to turn Extra Innings into a Roc-A-Fella festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tThe Met Gala-esque guest list for the night included Beyonc\u00e9, Rihanna, Usher, Jeezy, Clipse, Pharrell, Slick Rick, The-Dream, Teyana Taylor, Fat Joe and Jadakiss.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
