It\u2019s a 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe \u2013 one of only six ever made \u2013 that spent a considerable amount of time in the custody of the man who designed it. That\u2019d be Carroll Shelby.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s news because \u2013 surprise! \u2013 it\u2019s coming up for auction. Considering those factors \u2013 the astonishing rarity, superstar ownership, and the whole <em>It\u2019s Something Really Fast From The Sixties<\/em> thing \u2013 it\u2019s going to cost someone a lot of money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>\u201cThe consignment of this Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe \u2013 the only American-built FIA World GT Champion \u2013 represents the pinnacle of American automotive achievement,\u201d said Gooding Christie\u2019s boss David Gooding.<\/p>\n<p>As befits such things, it\u2019s known by its chassis number \u2013 CSX2300 \u2013 was the third of just six Daytona Coupes finished in late 1963, and was originally built \u201cwith the explicit intent to defeat Ferrari\u2019s 250 GTO\u201d. In 1965&#8217;s over-2.0-litre category in the \u2018international championship for GT manufacturers\u2019, it did indeed beat Ferrari.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>(Don\u2019t forget, these pocket rockets came equipped with 4.7-litre Ford V8s pushing out nearly 400 horsepower, packaged within a delectable bodyshape that likely weighed about as much as a hearty American breakfast.)<\/p>\n<p>This one had no time for breakfast. It raced across Europe. It raced in Japan. And in 1975 was sold to Carroll Shelby, who kept hold of it right up until 1998. Shelby commissioned a full restoration back to its 1965 spec too, and in his ownership was displayed across the US at historic races.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>In 2000 it once again underwent another resto, did another world tour (Monterey, Goodwood), and has now come up for sale. And \u2013 not a surprise because you\u2019ve read the headline \u2013 Gooding Christie\u2019s reckons on a price north of twenty five million bucks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn enduring expression of remarkable vision, CSX2300 presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a true piece of automotive history,\u201d it said.
