New Estimates of His VO2 Max Prove It."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2286066616-scaled.jpg&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-wrap fp-contentTarget\">\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"mb-base-loose flex flex-wrap gap-(--spacing-base)\">\n<div class=\"fp-remove flex items-center justify-start gap-(--spacing-base-tight)\"><span class=\"font-utility-2 font-bold text-primary\">Jim Cotton<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pub-date font-utility-2 text-secondary\">Updated July 26, 2026 10:50AM<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tadej Poga\u010dar is a physiological phenom, an athletic one-of-a-kind.<\/p>\n<p>And we\u2019re not only saying that because he\u2019s just won a fifth yellow jersey at the Tour de France.<\/p>\n<p>A new study suggests Poga\u010dar might have one of the highest VO2 Max scores in the history of endurance.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder, VO2 Max is <em>the<\/em> most important marker of performance potential.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a measure of maximum oxygen uptake that summarizes the power of all the most important parts of the engine \u2013 the heart, lungs, and the mitochondria.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s tested by all top athletes via a heinous indoor step test and ventilation mask. The result is revealed by few.<\/p>\n<p>The forthcoming paper seen by <em>Velo<\/em> calculated Poga\u010dar\u2019s VO2 Max to be around 96ml\/kg\/min, or potentially as high as 102ml\/kg\/min.<\/p>\n<p>Those numbers are off the charts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The highest Vo2 Max tested under robust lab conditions was 97.5, as set by Oscar Svendsen in 2012. Triathlon crusher Kristian Blummenfelt recently posted images suggesting his VO2 Max was in the triple digits, but few believe it.<\/p>\n<p>For some Tour de France context, Poga\u010dar\u2019s estimated VO2 Max dwarves those of four-time yellow jersey Chris Froome (tested at 88.2), and U.S. legend Greg LeMond (reported to be 92.5).<\/p>\n<p>As the authors of the paper conclude:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoga\u010dar must possess extraordinary physiological capabilities and, most likely, is approaching that hitherto insurmountable barrier of 100 ml\/kg\/min. Are we, then, looking at the greatest endurance athlete of all time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, these estimates of Poga\u010dar\u2019s athletic potential are just that \u2013 <em>estimates<\/em>. There\u2019s no certainty that Poga\u010dar is \u201cthe greatest endurance athlete of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it would be no surprise if the two-time world champion and five-time Tour de France winner belongs somewhere in the God-Tier. He\u2019s made 7w\/kg look normal and 80km attacks a routine.<\/p>\n<h2>Putting a number on Poga\u010dar<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_994837\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Poga\u010dar Tour de France\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-994837\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2286806459.jpg?width=2048&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Poga\u010dar broke Pantani\u2019s ancient Alpe d\u2019Huez record on stage 19 of the Tour de France to put an exclamation point on his fifth GC title.<\/span> (Photo: Thibault Camus \/ POOL \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Pog Paper (as we\u2019re calling it) is the work of three key thinkers in exercise science \u2013 Pedro Valenzuela, Sebastian Sitko, and Ole Kristian Berg.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sitko is one of the group that masterminded the at-home 5-minute VO2 Max test, for instance.<\/p>\n<p>They teased their new study this week in the <em>Fissac<\/em> blog and this social media post, and kindly shared a pre-publication copy with <em>Velo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The paper is due to be published by the <i>International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance <\/i>later this year.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, they calculate the VO2 Max required to produce four of Poga\u010dar\u2019s recent sledgehammer climbing performances.<\/p>\n<p>They chose the Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000 (both from the 2024 Tour de France), Peyragudes (2025 Tour de France), and Passo di Ganda (Il Lombardia 2025) to reflect different outputs over different durations, conditions, and types of race.<\/p>\n<h2>Going the long way around to get VO2 Max<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_995022\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The new paper used four of the recent performances of Poga\u010dar to estimate his VO2 Max.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"998\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-995022\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/HNwIVgrWcAAg_NA-1200x998.jpeg?width=3840&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">The new paper used four of Poga\u010dar\u2019s recent performances to estimate his VO2 Max. Valenzuela)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first step of the study was to establish Poga\u010dar\u2019s power output for each climb.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Poga\u010dar doesn\u2019t share his numbers to Strava \u2013 that kind of juicy intel is kept under lock-and-key by team UAE Emirates-XRG.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Instead, the authors use the verified times and power outputs of other racers on the same climbs to create an estimate. The Strava accounts of several riders who share their data \u2013 including Oscar Onley, Derek Gee, and Tobias Johannessen \u2013 were mined for information.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting estimates of Poga\u010dar\u2019s power for each climb were then used to derive the required VO2 Max for each performance.<\/p>\n<p>The authors did this by applying well-established theories about how long athletes can sustain certain levels of VO2 Max.<\/p>\n<p>For example, cyclists ride at around 95 percent VO2 Max during an all-out 20-minute effort. Full VO2 Max output is only possible for 3-6 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Adjustments for body mass, air density, altitude, and wind speed were made throughout the two-part calculation.<\/p>\n<p>The final step of the Poga\u010dar Prediction was to sense-check the model using Froome\u2019s published times and power data, and his tested VO2 Max.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Poga\u010dar would need a VO2 Max of between 90 and 102, with an average of 96\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The result of all this?<\/p>\n<p>The study estimates Poga\u010dar pushed VO2 Max scores of 96 on Plateau de Beille, 97 on Isola 2000, 94 on Peyragudes, and 98 on Passo di Ganda.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame the study was finalized before Poga\u010dar broke the Alpe d\u2019Huez climbing record with a 35-minute, 7w\/kg effort. His ride on stage 19 of this year\u2019s Tour de France is considered alongside Plateau de Beille as his all-time best.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the authors\u2019 conclusion from their calculations was a mind-blower:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results were remarkably consistent. Even under the most conservative assumptions, Poga\u010dar would need a VO2 Max of between 90 and 102 ml\/kg\/min, with an average of 96 ml\/kg\/min.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Who cares about an estimate?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_993964\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tadej Poga\u010dar\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"757\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-993964\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2286615448-1200x757.jpg?width=3840&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Poga\u010dar\u2019s performance data is a closely guarded secret.<\/span>\u00a0(Photo: Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If this all sounds familiar, Berg applied a similar method in 2025 to estimate Poga\u010dar\u2019s VO2 Max to be somewhere in the mid-90s. We wrote about it here.<\/p>\n<p>But what makes the new calculations different is the use of a more robust model and a study that\u2019s been accepted into a more regarded and respected journal.<\/p>\n<p>But all that said, the new calculations still <em>prove<\/em>\u00a0nothing.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re only a good estimate.<\/p>\n<p>However, it does give us a strong indication that Poga\u010dar\u2019s VO2 Max must be in the mid-90s, minimum \u2013 it could be 94, 96, or 98. Heck, it could even break the seemingly impossible barrier of 100 ml\/kg\/min.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And given that Poga\u010dar keeps his training data a closely guarded secret (except for this carefully timed \u201cleak\u201d), that provides a fascinating new layer of context to help comprehend the world\u2019s greatest cyclist.<\/p>\n<p>We can now say with some certainty that Pog\u2019s FTP is around 430 watts, his zone 2 tops out at around 340 watts, and that his VO2 Max is \u2026 insane.<\/p>\n<h2>Putting a number on the GOAT<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_995023\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"721\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-995023\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Z8C_9130-1-1200x721.jpg?width=3840&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Poga\u010dar has been playing the Tour de France on easy mode since 2024.<\/span> (Photo: Gruber Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The forthcoming Pog Paper was teased at the perfect time.<\/p>\n<p>Poga\u010dar will win a record-equaling fifth yellow jersey Sunday. After the exit of long-time rival Jonas Vingegaard, the 27-year-old amassed five stage wins and could have taken three more if he wasn\u2019t working for his teammate Isaac del Toro.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed inevitable that Poga\u010dar would win a fifth Tour de France before he retired.<\/p>\n<p>The Slovenian has been redefining what we once thought possible in pro cycling since he hit Peak Pog in 2024.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In fact, he\u2019s barely missed since he switched to a new trainer, Javier Sola, at the start of that year. He learned to love high-carb fueling, heat training, and strength work as part of a new training philosophy that made him near-invulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>His two devastating defeats to Visma-Lease a Bike in 2022 and 2023 on the Col du Granon and Col de La Loze now seem like a footnote.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, this all comes with awkward questions, which we\u2019ll not entertain here.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018I\u2019m no stronger than I was two years ago\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking Saturday from the Tour de France, Poga\u010dar suggested he might have maxed out his physiology.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he\u2019s found sustained dominance by improving everything <em>beyond<\/em> the numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t feel I\u2019ve been getting much stronger since 2024,\u201d Poga\u010dar said after stage 20 of the Tour. \u201cThe numbers are there, but I\u2019ve got more experience. The small things are still improving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the numbers are the same, but details count.
