Jonas Vingegaard has received successful surgery to fix the damage that took him out of the Tour de France, but team Visma-Lease a Bike is still reeling from the loss of its leader.<\/p>\n

Speaking Friday to IDL<\/em>, team boss Richard Plugge didn\u2019t hold back in pushing the blame for Vingegaard\u2019s dramatic stage 15 crash onto a race that\u2019s outgrown itself.<\/p>\n \u201cIf there\u2019s a major threat to the Tour, it\u2019s two things: firstly, the roads and then the course. It\u2019s simply getting more and more dangerous,\u201d Plugge told IDL<\/em>. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly why Jonas crashed on Sunday.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a very dangerous spot that wasn\u2019t properly marked. Life-threatening, in other words,\u201d Plugge said. \u201cAs a result, we\u2019ve now lost the number two rider in the Tour de France.\u201d<\/p>\n The tone of the Tour de France changed when Vingegaard crashed out on the roads to Plateau de Solaison.<\/p>\n The Dane was leaking time to his archnemesis Tadej Poga\u010dar but refused to bow down to the Slovenian.<\/p>\n Vingegaard lost his front wheel and smashed to the tarmac as he hurtled through a roundabout littered with road furniture and shallow cobbles last weekend.<\/p>\n Here’s how Vingegaard’s hopes in this Tour de France ended: Visma probably entered too wide\/fast in this corner, his wheel slipped and he went down hard on his own. Bloody road furniture! \ud83d\ude2d#TDF2026 pic.twitter.com\/O7B5RZtiwT<\/p>\n \u2014 Mihai Simion (@faustocoppi60) July 19, 2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n \nThe incident sparked a wave of debate over the role of overnight dope tests, a wayward moto, and a peloton that was pushing too hard.<\/p>\n Vingegaard blamed himself for coming in too hot.<\/p>\n Plugge was adamant the hulking scale of the Tour was the problem.<\/p>\n The Dutchman blamed inadequate signage and road markings on the perilous point of the course.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s getting increasingly difficult to make it safe with all the speed bumps, roundabouts, and unmarked traffic islands\u2014and spectators who just jump out onto the road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Plugge spoke to IDL<\/em> as part of a wide-ranging discussion of the safety \u2013 or lack of it \u2013 of the Tour de France.<\/p>\n Two days after Vingegaard abandoned with a fractured collarbone, GC hopeful Florian Lipowitz broke his collarbone in a brutal high-speed fall in the stage 16 time trial. Fan footage reveals how only supreme handling skills saved Poga\u010dar from disaster on the very same corner.<\/p>\n One day later, Poga\u010dar got lucky with another miracle save when he narrowly avoided a mass crash early in stage 17.
