Tim Wellens almost missed the time cut, and Adam Yates was still experiencing the same sickness he showed on Wednesday.

Florian Vermeersch finished over half an hour back and told Sporza he is suffering with an injury.

Meanwhile Remco Evenepoel is waiting in the wings, the Belgian having taken Sunday’s stage 15 summit finish and then Tuesday’s stage 16 time trial.

Those two results narrowed his deficit to 4:32 and while Pogačar still has a comfortable buffer, his team’s weakness will do him no favors.

“It’s not nice to kick off the coming days like this,” Evenepoel said after stage 18, according to Sporza.

“But it can happen that you get sick; it has happened to me too. Then you just have to endure it.”

Momentum is on his side following his recent victories. He took an unprecedented 10 week break from competition after Liège-Bastogne-Liège and, on the evidence of the past few stages, may be hitting his best-ever form at precisely the right time.

He’s ready to race and he expects things to ramp up.

“I personally think a team like Decathlon will now pull out all the stops to attack Del Toro’s third place,” he said. “Just testing if he’s also suffering from illness.”

If they do, and if Pogačar ends up isolated, things could become intriguing.

‘It’s clear there is illness present’

Speaking after the finish, UAE Emirates-XRG sports manager Matxín Fernández pushed back on suggestions that Tim Wellens was ill.

The Belgian was last on the stage, finishing barely ahead of the time cut.

“He is not sick. He is not sick,” Matxín said, speaking to reports from Wielflits and other outlets.

However Sporza reported that Wellens is indeed ill, suffering from a sore throat. The outlet noted his voice was harsh at the finish and that he was exhausted.

And the rider himself appeared to confirm being unwell.

“In any other race, a person would give up, but you don’t do that in the Tour.
