Jasper Philipsen salvaged his Tour de France after winning out of a big breakaway group in stage 17 on Wednesday while key Tadej Poga\u010dar teammate Adam Yates suffered a crisis across the transition stage.<\/p>\n

Alpecin-Premier Tech teammate Mathieu van der Poel rolled out the red carpet for the Belgian sprinter to win his first stage of the 2026 Tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t in the best shape of my life and the first stages were just horrible. I couldn\u2019t find the feeling I was hoping for,\u201d Philipsen said. \u201cAfter 17 stages to take the victory, it\u2019s really one for the team who really took care of me. I was just disappointed and angry that I couldn\u2019t take a stage win. I was not very nice at the dinner table. This victory took a few years off my life. I thought the stage was lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla) crossed the line second, with Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA-CGM) kicking to third.<\/p>\n

Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) rode into the early break, attacked a few times late, and settled for 21st on the stage in his fifth big breakaway attempt of this Tour.<\/p>\n

A day after the time trial, Wednesday\u2019s transition stage delivered a wild, attack-riddled day as expected.<\/p>\n

The brutal pace saw UAE Emirates-XRG climber Yates suffer a major crisis. Tim Wellens dropped back to help pace the British ace to the line to safely make the time cut.<\/p>\n

With three straight summit finales stacked up across the Alps, it was a relatively calm day in the saddle for the GC favorites and Poga\u010dar could follow the wheels without too much drama.<\/p>\n

Green jersey race tightens<\/h2>\n

The 174.7km stage 17 from Chamb\u00e9ry to Voiron was circled by every breakaway rider in the bunch. A solid group pulled clear that included Simmons and Van der Poel, but the day\u2019s main obstacle at the Cat. 3 Col de Pr\u00e9s kept things on a short leash in the first manic hour of racing.<\/p>\n

The back half of the stage was over rolling terrain, so the sprinters didn\u2019t fully throw in the towel. Decathlon CMA-CGM took huge pulls at the front to trim the lead to under one minute to the break when Olav Kooij and others bridged across to the front group.<\/p>\n

With 25km to go, Jasper Stuyven uncorked a solo attack, but he was reeled in by a big chase group with about 3.5km to go, and missed out on the Tour stage win that\u2019s eluded the veteran Belgian across his career.<\/p>\n

Mads Pedersen attacked to drive a five-rider group to scoop up the day\u2019s intermediate sprint with under 30km to go to defend green, but he missed out on big points at the finish line after only mustering eighth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bad day and it\u2019s a big loss for points,\u201d said Pedersen, who\u2019s defended green since winning stage 4. \u201cIt is what it is and we have to regroup for the next days. This fight will go all the way to Paris.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the win and the 100 points that came with it, Philipsen closed the gap to Pedersen to just seven points with four stages left to go.<\/p>\n

Yates saves the day<\/h2>\n

It was calm day in the saddle for the GC favorites and Poga\u010dar finished with the main GC group without major shakeups in the overall standings.<\/p>\n

Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) tangled up with early spill, but finished in the main GC group to remain eighth overall.<\/p>\n

The day\u2019s big drama came when Yates started suffering from the gun. Team officials confirmed the 33-year-old woke up sick and he was soon alone off the back.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdam was sick yesterday in the morning, he suffered yesterday and today in the morning he looked much better, eating good, but when you have bad day like him yesterday then you pay it later,\u201d Poga\u010dar said. \u201cI hope he didn\u2019t go too deep and that he will be better tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wellens was sent back and linked up with Uno-X rider Anders Halland Johannessen to straggle in more than 26 minutes back, but the trio safely finished within the time cut. Third overall in the 2023 Tour, Yates survived the stage, but it could be difficult in Thursday\u2019s stage into the Alps if he cannot recover in time.<\/p>\n

The 2026 Tour continues Thursday with the 185.2km Stage 18 from Voiron to Orci\u00e8res-Merlette. The final Cat. 1 summit finish opens three brutal days across the French Alps, with the stage ending at 7.1km at 6.7 percent.<\/p>\n
