The foundation characterized the gift as \u201cvery substantial\u201d and is still\u00a0in the process of inventorying\u00a0the extent of the planned donation, which includes paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, and notebooks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis bequest will enable the Foundation to share our father\u2019s work more broadly, advance public understanding of his important contribution to twentieth-century art, and carry forward his philosophy and commitment to giving back to the arts community,\u201d Joanna Pousette-Dart, the artist\u2019s daughter and foundation board chair, said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPousette-Dart was a member of the first generation of Abstract Expressionists and is considered a founding member of the New York School. He was memorably included in the now iconic\u00a0<em>Life<\/em>\u00a0magazine photograph,\u00a0<em>The\u00a0Irascibles<\/em>, which took its name from a letter sent to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York protesting its exhibition \u201cAmerican Painting Today\u20141950.\u201d\u00a0His paintings and sculptures are\u00a0known\u00a0for their use of biomorphic forms, with his canvases employing an\u00a0all-over approach to\u00a0abstraction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEstablished in\u00a02014,\u00a0more than\u00a0two decades\u00a0after Pousette-Dart\u2019s death in\u00a01992, the foundation is dedicated to\u00a0\u201cadvancing comprehensive understanding of Richard Pousette-Dart\u2019s contributions as a visual artist; supporting educational programs where\u00a0art-making\u00a0is a vehicle for positive personal transformation; and promoting intellectual exchange within the arts,\u201d according\u00a0to its mission statement. Its founding executive director,\u00a0Charles Duncan, will step down from his role,\u00a0though he\u00a0will\u00a0become a consultant to the foundation to support \u201ca smooth transition to new executive leadership,\u201d per\u00a0a release.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt has been an incredible privilege to steward the legacy of Richard Pousette-Dart for more than a decade in concert with a dedicated board of directors,\u201d Duncan said in a statement. \u201cRecently, we jointly assessed the future demands of the Foundation, whose holdings of artworks will increase exponentially, and arrived at the decision that the Foundation should now pursue a next generation of leadership that will guide the growing organization into the forthcoming decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe foundation has launched a national search, led by executive search firm Isaacson,\u00a0Miller,\u00a0to find Duncan\u2019s replacement. (Nominations and applications for the role can be\u00a0submitted\u00a0via the firm\u2019s website.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring his tenure, Duncan oversaw the preservation and conservation of the Pousette-Dart works already in the foundation\u2019s holdings, established a grant-making program for cultural organizations, and secured the artist\u2019s Hudson Valley home and studio\u2019s addition to both the\u00a0National Register\u00a0of Historic Places\u00a0and the\u00a0New York State Register of Historic Places.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuncan also helped support the realization of the Whitney Museum\u2019s centennial celebrations for Pousette-Dart in 2016, as well as organizing the first exhibition of the artist\u2019s photography.\u00a0In 2025, he co-curated\u00a0\u201cRichard Pousette-Dart:\u00a0Poetry of Light,\u201d the largest exhibition of the artist\u2019s work outside the US, at the\u00a0Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany, as well as a show on the artist\u2019s etchings at the\u00a0New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJoanna Pousette-Dart added, \u201cCharles Duncan\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0exceptional leadership,\u00a0dedication\u00a0and stewardship in preserving,\u00a0promoting\u00a0and advancing the artistic legacy of my father, Richard Pousette-Dart, as well as guiding the overall philanthropic mission of his namesake Foundation.
