\n\tThe European Union has officially suspended its\u00a0\u20ac2 million ($2.3 million)\u00a0grant\u00a0to\u00a0the Venice Biennale after a review of the inclusion of the Russian Pavilion in its official program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tThe decision was announced by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) after a legal review and on the recommendation of the European Commission,\u00a0Monopol<\/em>\u00a0reported Tuesday.\u00a0Last week, the Commission\u00a0announced\u00a0its recommendation to suspend the funding, which\u00a0represents\u00a0a fraction of the festival\u2019s overall budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cCultural projects financed with European taxpayers\u2019 money should uphold democratic values and promote open dialogue, diversity and freedom of expression\u2014values that are not respected in today\u2019s Russia,\u201d a spokesperson for the European Commission said during the\u00a0announcement\u00a0of the grant\u2019s suspension in Brussels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tThe inclusion of Russia has been a point of contention for the EU since before the Biennale opened in early May.
