Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the Tour de France and changed the trajectory of the entire race in a dramatic day on and off the bike Sunday.<\/p>\n

Vingegaard was forced out of the Tour with a broken collarbone after his high-speed fall 20km from the finish of stage 15 on Sunday. The incident raised speculation over the role of a controversial 2 a.m. doping control, a wayward moto, and a team that was pacing too hard.<\/p>\n
Vingegaard recounted the devastating crash that ended his race\u00a0Sunday night.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2<\/em> while dosed up on painkillers and wrapped into a sling, the 29-year-old brushed off his injury and took personal blame for his fall.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m doing surprisingly well,\u201d Vingegaard told TV2<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously very disappointing for us to be forced out like this, and for the Tour to end this way.<\/p>\n \u201cBut that\u2019s cycling. Fortunately, it\u2019s only a broken collarbone.\u201d<\/p>\n Vingegaard was first to fall as he rode fourth in a Visma-Lease a Bike train that led the peloton Sunday.<\/p>\n The Danish superstar lost control and slid into the curb as the bunch blasted into a fast right-hander complicated by a roundabout and road furniture.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were going for the stage win, and we perhaps went into this roundabout a bit too fast,\u201d Vingegaard said Sunday night. \u201cThen my front wheel just skidded out. I didn\u2019t have time to do anything.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s just how cycling races are sometimes,\u201d Vingegaard said. \u201cIt\u2019s just a massive shame for us, to be completely honest.\u201d<\/p>\n \ud83e\udd15The Tour de France is a brutal event. \ud83d\ude22<\/p>\n The Tour de France in shock as two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard crashes out during Stage 15.<\/p>\n \ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddf7 #TDF2026 | July 5-July 27 | Every Stage on SBS \ud83d\udcfa pic.twitter.com\/TBw1nU02h9<\/p>\n \u2014 SBS Sport (@SBSSportau) July 19, 2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Vingegaard\u2019s teammate, Davide Piganzoli, told TV reporters at the finish that the moto leading the race confused the following pack.<\/p>\n The vehicle took an errant trajectory through the bend, leaving riders to make late adjustments to their lines.<\/p>\n Vingegaard refused to place the blame elsewhere.<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe the motorbike made a mistake, but we can\u2019t rely on the motorbikes,\u201d Vingegaard told TV2.<\/em> \u201cWe have to use our own judgement.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople make mistakes, and there\u2019s nothing we can do about that now.\u201d<\/p>\n Many suggested after the stage that lost sleep and clouded concentration could have caused Vingegaard\u2019s error.<\/p>\n Even yellow jersey Tadej Poga\u010dar speculated on it during his press conference after the stage Sunday.<\/p>\n He and Vingegaard were controversially woken for routine dope tests in the middle of the night between two huge mountain stages in the Vosges.<\/p>\n \u201cJonas did his test at two in the morning. It got me thinking that maybe this is also a reason [for the crash],\u201d Poga\u010dar said. \u201cOne night that your sleep is ruined, so maybe you\u2019re a little bit less concentrated in the descent. History is ruined.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t blame that, but it could also be a little bit connected,\u201d Poga\u010dar said.<\/p>\n Visma-Lease a Bike\u2019s lead DS Marc Reef wouldn\u2019t be drawn on what became the hottest topic of a dramatic day. Remco Evenepoel\u2019s stunning mountaintop victory over Poga\u010dar and Isaac de Toro was almost overshadowed by the dope test debate.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s not something to speculate on that,\u201d Reef told reporters at the finish line.<\/p>\n Reef instead returned to the role of the lead moto.<\/p>\n \u201cThe boys were ready, Jonas was ready. He was feeling good during the stage,\u201d Reef said. \u201cThe crash itself, it was more because the motorbike had to brake because of the corner that was suddenly there.\u201d<\/p>\n Whether due to fatigue, handling error, or a misleading motorbike, Visma-Lease a Bike is left rudderless for the final week of this Tour de France.<\/p>\n Piganzoli, Matteo Jorgenson, and Sepp Kuss will have to make the most of their own chances this week in the Alps.<\/p>\n This is the third year in a row that Vingegaard\u2019s Tour de France hopes have been severely impacted by misfortune.<\/p>\n His crash in the Basque Country in April 2024 put him off the wheel before he even started that year\u2019s race. Vingegaard admitted he only recently felt fully back to form after he fractured seven ribs, his sternum, and punctured both lungs in the brutal fall.<\/p>\n In 2025, a concussion in spring torpedoed Vingegaard\u2019s preparation.<\/p>\n The four-time grand tour winner revealed only a few weeks ago that the toll and sacrifice of racing had put him at a career crossroads at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n Speaking Sunday, Vingegaard said he\u2019s already thinking about what\u2019s next.<\/p>\n What that will be is to be revealed.<\/p>\n \u201cI just talked to my family a little bit. That was the most important thing for me,\u201d Vingegaard told TV2<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019ve come up with a plan for what\u2019s going to happen now, and I\u2019ve talked to some of the team.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s no use hanging your head. It just makes it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n The Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a is unlikely to be an option for Vingegaard. He already won the 2026 Giro d\u2019Italia and raced two weeks of the Tour de France.
