The Oklahoma City Thunder are trading their longest-tenured player and a key member of their 2025 championship team.<\/p>\n

The Thunder are sending Luguentz Dort, one of the NBA\u2019s premier perimeter defenders, to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal, league sources with knowledge of the trade who aren\u2019t allowed to speak publicly because the deal is yet to be official confirmed.<\/p>\n

Dort, who was with the Thunder for the last seven seasons as they made the climb from the Western Conference cellar to the NBA\u2019s mountaintop, joins a Hawks team that is already stocked with talented point-of-attack defenders and is looking to build off a first-round playoff exit last spring.<\/p>\n

The Hawks sent Zaccharie Risacher, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, to the Dallas Mavericks in the deal. The Thunder received back three second-round picks in 2027, 2031 and 2032.<\/p>\n

Dort signed with the Thunder as an undrafted free agent in 2019, the same summer Oklahoma City acquired Shai Gilgeous-Alexander via trade from the LA Clippers. The Thunder went 22-50 and 24-58 in their second and third seasons with the organization. But it didn\u2019t take Oklahoma City much longer to make the jump to becoming one of the NBA\u2019s elite teams.<\/p>\n

The Thunder went 57-25 in 2023-24, the best record in the Western Conference. Dort started 79 games for the Thunder during that breakout season. He knocked down 39.4 percent of his 3s on five attempts per game while being integral to the Thunder\u2019s identity as an elite, harassing defensive team. The Thunder lost to the Mavericks in the second round of the playoffs, an experience that proved useful to them as they won 68 regular-season games the following season and beat the Indiana Pacers in the 2025 NBA Finals.<\/p>\n

In June, the Thunder exercised Dort\u2019s $17.7 million player option for 2026-27. Before deciding to trade him Sunday, the Thunder were starting at a luxury-tax bill for the upcoming season of more than $100 million. Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren are all owed more than $40 million each this year. Cason Wallace, the No. 10 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is eligible for an extension this summer.<\/p>\n

Dort started 423 games for Oklahoma City over seven years. The Thunder could slide Wallace, Alex Caruso or Ajay Mitchell into the starting role Dort vacates.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile in Dallas, the Mavericks will once again have three former No. 1 picks on their team. Risacher joins a roster that already includes Kyrie Irving, the No. 1 pick in 2011, and Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.<\/p>\n

The 6-foot-8 Risacher averaged 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in two seasons with the Hawks. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2025, but the Hawks deemed that he wasn\u2019t essential to their future after playing 23 minutes in three games of the team\u2019s first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks in April.<\/p>\n

Risacher, who\u2019s 21 years old, joins a Dallas team that greatly values size. The Mavericks already added the 6-foot-9 Morez Johnson Jr. and the 7-foot Santi Aldama to their roster this offseason. The Mavericks also have Flagg, P.J. Washington, Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford and Moussa Ciss\u00e9 as options to deploy in their frontcourt.<\/p>\n

The Hawks will also receive Ryan Nembhard, who spent most of last season in Dallas on a two-way deal, in this transaction. At 5-foot-11, Nembhard is an undersized guard who\u2019s an elite passer. He had 23 assists in his final game with the Mavericks in April. Nembhard, who shot 41.5 percent from the field as a rookie, will need to prove he can be a reliable scorer and hold his own defensively in order to stick in the NBA.<\/p>\n

Dort, who was the most accomplished player involved in the three-team trade, finished fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2025 while earning All-Defensive First Team honors that same year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
