champion Adriano Panatta has declared that men\u2019s tennis will only become \u201can open contest\u201d again when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\">Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> returns to compete with Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz won his first two tournaments of 2026 \u2014 the Australian Open and the Qatar Open \u2014 with Sinner losing in the semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively at these events.<\/p>\n<p>Sinner then triumphed in Indian Wells and Miami to complete the Sunshine Double, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\">Alcaraz<\/a> falling in the semi-finals and third round respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The only match between the pair so far in 2026 was their showdown in the Monte Carlo Masters final in April, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\">Sinner<\/a> won 7-6(5), 6-3.<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz has not played since suffering a wrist injury at the Barcelona Open in his only match since the Monte Carlo final.<\/p>\n<p>During Alcaraz\u2019s absence, Sinner has won Wimbledon, as well as the clay-court Masters 1000 events in By winning his second Wimbledon, Sinner has shown he is simply too strong for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe fended off Zverev \u2014 who had meanwhile won in Paris and climbed to number two in the rankings \u2014 handing the German his tenth consecutive defeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSport \u2014 not just tennis \u2014 needs fierce rivalries to be as compelling as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former world No 4 went on to assess Sinner\u2019s win over Zverev in the Wimbledon final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZverev faced him in the best possible way; I have to give him credit,\u201d Panatta added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see that the victory in Paris restored the confidence that so many unexpected losses had eroded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZverev is a top-class player, with rock-solid groundstrokes and a serve that inevitably makes its presence felt over the long haul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Sinner is still a cut above \u2014 clearly better than the German.
