It stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who embarks on a treacherous journey home after the Trojan War.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Also on board are Tom Holland\u00a0as his son Telemachus and\u00a0Anne Hathaway\u00a0as his wife Penelope, alongside\u00a0Zendaya,\u00a0Robert Pattinson,\u00a0Lupita Nyong\u2019o,\u00a0Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton and Mia Goth.<\/p>\n<p>The director and producer recently appeared on <em>Today<\/em> and detailed how challenging it was to pull off the masterpiece after conceptualizing the film for two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, I can get something made that I couldn\u2019t otherwise get made. Fans had to wait three years for Nolan\u2019s return with <em>The Odyssey<\/em>, and, when asked if that pattern would continue and it would be \u201canother three years\u201d before his next release, Nolan replied: \u201cOh, at least.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\">\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody\u2019s stamina, I think. I mean, it\u2019s <em>The Odyssey<\/em>, of course it should be difficult,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re not doing the job right making a film of \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 if it doesn\u2019t seem difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He recalled warning Damon that filming the near three-hour film would be tough, something Nolan said he suspected he \u201cdidn\u2019t really understand until we got on the boat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not until you get there and you start, you know, hiking up a goat\u2019s path to cyclops\u2019 cave,\u201d he said, adding that Damon had \u201ca sort of slow creeping realization\u201d that filming was \u201cnot going to be easy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a nod to the sheer scale of the film, <em>NME\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>Paul Bradshaw also awarded the blockbuster five stars, writing: \u201cCinema may have peaked with Christopher Nolan\u2019s blockbuster epic\u201d adding \u201cthis mind-boggling adventure should be seen on the big screen\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Elsewhere<em>,\u00a0<\/em>Nolan responded\u00a0to the backlash over some of the casting choices in\u00a0<i>The Odyssey\u00a0<\/i>this w<em>e<\/em><em>ek<\/em>,\u00a0calling it \u201cirrelevant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His comments came after the casting of Nyong\u2019o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra drew backlash from the likes of Elon Musk, while others have criticised Travis Scott\u2019s role as a bard and Page\u2019s casting as the Greek soldier Sinon.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3957163\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3957163\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3957163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/The-Odyssey.jpg\" alt=\"The Odyssey review\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1270\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3957163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Damon in \u2018The Odyssey\u2019. comments come after Nolan recently explained\u00a0why he opted for modern English dialogue in\u00a0<i>The Odyssey<\/i>, saying he wanted to find \u201clanguage that has emotional not intellectual meaning to people\u201d, opting for contemporary accents and dialogue over a more theatrical approach.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan also recently revealed that\u00a0Samantha Morton\u2019s performance as the goddess
