CREDIT: Mike Lewis Photography\/Redferns<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_row_inner tdi_83 article-content-row vc_row vc_inner wpb_row td-pb-row\">\n<div class=\"vc_column_inner tdi_85  wpb_column vc_column_container tdc-inner-column td-pb-span12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"td_block_wrap tdb_single_content tdi_86 td-pb-border-top td_block_template_2 td-post-content tagdiv-type\" data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_86\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p>Ahead of Metallica\u2018s residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, Lars Ulrich has looked back at being there for U2\u2018s opening night at the state-of-the-art venue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: U2 live in Las Vegas: a dazzling opening night at the $2 billion Sphere<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The drummer was there for the Irish band\u2019s historic opening night at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and, speaking to U2 guitarist The Edge during his<em> Close To The Edge<\/em> show on SiriusXM, he said seeing it live made him reconsider what was possible on stage.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was there opening night and was so just fucking awestruck, inspired, energized \u2013 all of it,\u201d Ulrich said. \u201cIt was just, like, \u2018Holy shit, this is somehow another frontier\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, you guys were the first ones in, and it was just so incredible to see that night,\u201d Ulrich continued. \u201cSo, in that spirit, three years later, when we start here in a few months, we\u2019re so excited and definitely have heard from a few folks about the filming and all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Metallica are set to embark on their own residency at the Sphere this autumn. When the metal icons first announced their stint at the high-tech venue, the \u2018Life Burns Faster\u2019 run was initially slated for an eight date run between October 1 and October 31. After overwhelming demand from fans, the residency soon expanded to an extensive 24 nights and will now run weekly in two-date increments from October 2026 through March 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be challenging,\u201d Ulrich said of the upcoming shows. \u201cAnd obviously, like everybody else I\u2019ve talked to about it, it\u2019s overwhelming and fucking intimidating.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut hopefully when we step out on stage that first night, we\u2019ll have it somewhat together. And as you know, that\u2019s a place maybe we don\u2019t end up in often enough, because we have a tendency to put ourselves in environments that we completely control and know. And so I think it\u2019s really good to be able to throw yourself for a loop like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sphere features massive wraparound 16K screens as well as a cutting-edge sound system, and has become a coveted destination for the biggest names in rock, with Metallica following\u00a0U2,\u00a0Phish,\u00a0Dead &amp; Company, and the Eagles in hosting a residency at the Sphere.<\/p>\n<p>Last spring,\u00a0Kirk Hammett spoke about the possibility of playing the arena, saying it was a \u201cgreat example of how venues are changing\u201d. He continued: \u201cThat\u2019s using modern technology to the fullest, to really up the levels of production and entertainment, connected to AI and making it a crazy experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ulrich later revealed that the group were considering the Sphere, explaining that he would \u201cfucking love to do it\u201d.\u00a0Robert Trujillo, meanwhile, said the \u201cpossibilities are endless\u201d\u00a0at\u00a0the venue. \u201cNo heavy rock band has done this,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span mammoth \u2018M72\u2019 tour.\u00a0The thrash metal icons took to the stage in the capital as part of\u00a0the last UK and Ireland leg of their huge world tour, which kicked off back in April 2023 and celebrated the release of latest album \u201872 Seasons\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>London dates came following shows in Dublin, Glasgow, and Cardiff over the past couple of weeks, and\u00a0the first of the two shows at London Stadium was played at the start of the month (July 3), where James Hetfield and co. broke out hits including \u2018Master Of Puppets\u2019, \u2018Seek And Destroy\u2019 and \u2018Sad for Kirk Hammett\u00a0wearing a \u201cTaylor Swift Is A CIA Psyop\u201d shirt\u00a0on stage, urged fans to donate blood and plasma by becoming the\u00a0first-ever metal group to collaborate with UK of Metallica\u2018s residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, Lars Ulrich has looked back at being there for U2\u2018s opening night at the state-of-the-art venue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: U2 live speaking to U2 guitarist The Edge during his<em> Close To The Edge<\/em> show on SiriusXM, he said seeing it live made him reconsider what was possible on stage.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was there opening night and was so just fucking awestruck, inspired, energized \u2013 all of it,\u201d Ulrich said. \u201cIt was just, like, \u2018Holy shit, this is somehow another frontier\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, you guys were the first ones in, and it was just so incredible to see that night,\u201d Ulrich continued. \u201cSo, in that spirit, three years later, when we start here in a few months, we\u2019re so excited and definitely have heard from a few folks about the filming and all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Metallica are set to embark on their own residency at the Sphere this autumn. When the metal icons first announced their stint at the high-tech venue, the \u2018Life Burns Faster\u2019 run was initially slated for an eight date run between October 1 and October 31. After overwhelming demand from fans, the residency soon expanded to an extensive 24 nights and will now run weekly in two-date increments from October 2026 through March 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be challenging,\u201d Ulrich said of the upcoming shows. \u201cAnd obviously, like everybody else I\u2019ve talked to about it, it\u2019s overwhelming and fucking intimidating.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut hopefully when we step out on stage that first night, we\u2019ll have it somewhat together. And as you know, that\u2019s a place maybe we don\u2019t end up in often enough, because we have a tendency to put ourselves in environments that we completely control and know. And so I think it\u2019s really good to be able to throw yourself for a loop like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sphere features massive wraparound 16K screens as well as a cutting-edge sound system, and has become a coveted destination for the biggest names in rock, with Metallica following\u00a0U2,\u00a0Phish,\u00a0Dead &amp; Company, and the Eagles in hosting a residency at the Sphere.<\/p>\n<p>Last spring,\u00a0Kirk Hammett spoke about the possibility of playing the arena, saying it was a \u201cgreat example of how venues are changing\u201d.
