Prints, negatives, and contact sheets have \u201ctaken over\u201d his whole house, arranged by alphabetised themes. One box is entirely pictures of dogs. Another, labelled \u201cbuses\u201d, contains photos of everyday passengers, who become the sharply examined subjects of Wood\u2019s lens. Whole shelves hold landscape photography from Ireland (where Wood was born) and North Wales (where he now lives). And the Chelsea Reach, a legendary Merseyside nightclub open from 1971 to the early 2000s, gets its own dedicated section in the Cs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Chelsea Reach is where Wood took many of his most important photographs, capturing the \u201cordinary\u201d nightlife that existed alongside the flashier images of punks and Blitz Kids in the 70s and 80s. It\u2019s also the subject of his new book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.photieman.com\/\"><em><span>And Love Comes in at the Eye<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>, which collects his photos from club nights at the Chelsea Reach. Young couples kiss, groups of friends dance, and clubbers show off their feathered hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>And Love Comes in at the Eye <\/span><\/em><span>is the debut title from the independent imprint Photieman Editions, formed by Wood\u2019s son, <\/span><span>Ciar\u00e1n<\/span><span>, to bypass the traditional publishing process. <\/span><span>Of course, trawling through a million images is no small feat, and the Chelsea Reach photos are just the beginning. Even they came with some surprises, like the rediscovery of colour prints thought to be lost forever. There\u2019s a special texture to many of the images too, Wood adds, thanks to the process of photographing the work directly from contact sheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s like Christmas every day,\u201d he says of the ongoing process of digging back through his photos and assembling them into coherent publications. \u201cDelete, delete, oh, maybe, delete, and then <\/span><em><span>wow<\/span><\/em><span>. You\u2019re getting all this kind of continual revelation.\u201d On a more sombre note, he adds: \u201cObviously time is passing. I\u2019m getting old. Now 75, speaking from his home and studio, he recounts getting off the bus after school as a kid and going into a charity shop, where there were hundreds of photos and postcards on sale. \u201cI\u2019d buy whole albums just for one photo,\u201d he says. \u201cI used to collect the pictures and make collages. My bedroom wall became a collage, even the ceiling.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nevertheless, it simply \u201cnever occurred\u201d to him that he could actually be the one behind the camera. \u201cWe never even had a camera in the house,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe didn\u2019t get <\/span><em><span>electricity<\/span><\/em><span> in the West of Ireland until 1962. We went to the well for water.\u201d Nevertheless, the impulse was \u201cobviously there\u201d, he notes, and he eventually made his way to art school to study painting. This was followed by a formative stint at a Butlin\u2019s holiday camp in Ayr, where he took \u201chappy snaps\u201d of the holidaymakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"9fd2f582-0fda-44b4-a61a-b48a00d24c4f\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449867.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.51\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tom Wood, And Love Comes in at the Eye (2026)\" class=\"img\" height=\"1988\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1600\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449867.jpeg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Tom Wood<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><span>\u201cIT WAS A DIFFERENT KIND OF EYE CONTACT, DIFFERENT KIND OF UNDERSTANDING\u201d<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>Wood\u2019s snapshots of life, often among working-class communities, appear tender and empathetic. Their subjects, bathed in summer sun at the English seaside or in the low lights of a party, are wryly observed, but there\u2019s a sense that they\u2019re really <\/span><em><span>living<\/span><\/em><span>. The photographer himself suggests he\u2019s experienced an almost preternatural sensation when taking photos: \u201cOften I sense people don\u2019t want to be photographed, and so I won\u2019t do it. But other times I feel they\u2019re allowing me to do it, even though they haven\u2019t seen me&#8230; I can tell through their eyes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He was drawn to the Chelsea Reach after taking on a job as a technician in the fine art department at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University). \u201cThere were nightclubs in Liverpool where everyone was really cool, and looked good, and was easy to photograph,\u201d he says. \u201cThe Chelsea was just dead ordinary people, none of whom had a clue why I was doing it&#8230; It was a different kind of eye contact, a different kind of understanding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Spending many nights at the Chelsea, as well as in the mirrored halls of The Grand, he drew upon his experience with holidaymakers to capture moments of intimacy and slightly awkward self-expression. \u201cIt was kind of like Butlin&#8217;s,\u201d he explains, \u201cin that during the day you photographed families or kids with teddy bears, and then at nighttime you photograph in the clubs where everyone drinks and there\u2019s a lot of smoke. And no one had cameras themselves.\u201d Importantly, no one had phones either, which have become a curse in terms of both eye contact and self-conscious audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"f0717245-002c-4c25-8c16-b48a00d257a1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449871.jpeg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.5\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tom Wood, And Love Comes in at the Eye (2026)\" class=\"img\" height=\"2006\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/1600\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449871.jpeg\" width=\"3000\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Photography Tom Wood<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<h1><span>\u201cI\u2019M INTERESTED IN GOOD PHOTOGRAPHS. IF IT\u2019S A DOCUMENT, THAT\u2019S A BONUS\u201d<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>Wood\u2019s work often draws comparisons to the photos of English photographer Martin Parr \u2013 and, superficially, it\u2019s easy to see why. The saturated colours and vignettes from 80s Britain resonate, but as Wood himself notes, they come from a very different place. \u201cWhen I first met Martin Parr, he said, \u2018I\u2019m a documentary photographer. If I get a good picture, it\u2019s a bonus,\u2019\u201d Wood explains. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Martin, I\u2019m interested in good photographs. If it\u2019s a document, it\u2019s a bonus.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In fact, Wood tries \u201cnever\u201d to use the word documentary. Instead, he says: \u201cI\u2019m exploring life through the camera, something like a receiver of sensations. Sensations are intangible; you try and organise them through the act of photography. That sounds pretentious, or whatever. But that\u2019s what happens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>Tom Wood\u2019s <\/span><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tom-wood\">Tom Wood<\/a> has amassed a personal archive of more than a million images. Prints, negatives, and contact sheets have \u201ctaken over\u201d his whole house, arranged by alphabetised themes. One box is entirely pictures of dogs. Another, labelled \u201cbuses\u201d, contains photos of everyday passengers, who become the sharply examined subjects of Wood\u2019s lens. Whole shelves hold landscape photography from Ireland (where Wood was born) and North Wales (where he now lives). And the Chelsea Reach, a legendary Merseyside nightclub open from 1971 to the early 2000s, gets its own dedicated section in the Cs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Chelsea Reach is where Wood took many of his most important photographs, capturing the \u201cordinary\u201d nightlife that existed alongside the flashier images of punks and Blitz Kids in the 70s and 80s. It\u2019s also the subject of his new book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.photieman.com\/\"><em><span>And Love Comes in at the Eye<\/span><\/em><\/a><span>, which collects his photos from club nights at the Chelsea Reach. Young couples kiss, groups of friends dance, and clubbers show off their feathered hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>And Love Comes in at the Eye <\/span><\/em><span>is the debut title from the independent imprint Photieman Editions, formed by Wood\u2019s son, <\/span><span>Ciar\u00e1n<\/span><span>, to bypass the traditional publishing process. <\/span><span>Of course, trawling through a million images is no small feat, and the Chelsea Reach photos are just the beginning. Even they came with some surprises, like the rediscovery of colour prints thought to be lost forever. There\u2019s a special texture to many of the images too, Wood adds, thanks to the process of photographing the work directly from contact sheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s like Christmas every day,\u201d he says of the ongoing process of digging back through his photos and assembling them into coherent publications. \u201cDelete, delete, oh, maybe, delete, and then <\/span><em><span>wow<\/span><\/em><span>. You\u2019re getting all this kind of continual revelation.\u201d On a more sombre note, he adds: \u201cObviously time is passing. I\u2019m getting old. Now 75, speaking from his home and studio, he recounts getting off the bus after school as a kid and going into a charity shop, where there were hundreds of photos and postcards on sale. \u201cI\u2019d buy whole albums just for one photo,\u201d he says. \u201cI used to collect the pictures and make collages. My bedroom wall became a collage, even the ceiling.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nevertheless, it simply \u201cnever occurred\u201d to him that he could actually be the one behind the camera. \u201cWe never even had a camera in the house,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe didn\u2019t get <\/span><em><span>electricity<\/span><\/em><span> in the West of Ireland until 1962. We went to the well for water.\u201d Nevertheless, the impulse was \u201cobviously there\u201d, he notes, and he eventually made his way to art school to study painting. Their subjects, bathed in summer sun at the English seaside or in the low lights of a party, are wryly observed, but there\u2019s a sense that they\u2019re really <\/span><em><span>living<\/span><\/em><span>. The photographer himself suggests he\u2019s experienced an almost preternatural sensation when taking photos: \u201cOften I sense people don\u2019t want to be photographed, and so I won\u2019t do it. But other times I feel they\u2019re allowing me to do it, even though they haven\u2019t seen me&#8230; I can tell through their eyes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He was drawn to the Chelsea Reach after taking on a job as a technician in the fine art department at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University). \u201cThere were nightclubs in Liverpool where everyone was really cool, and looked good, and was easy to photograph,\u201d he says. \u201cThe Chelsea was just dead ordinary people, none of whom had a clue why I was doing it&#8230; It was a different kind of eye contact, a different kind of understanding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Spending many nights at the Chelsea, as well as in the mirrored halls of The Grand, he drew upon his experience with holidaymakers to capture moments of intimacy and slightly awkward self-expression. \u201cIt was kind of like Butlin&#8217;s,\u201d he explains, \u201cin that during the day you photographed families or kids with teddy bears, and then at nighttime you photograph in the clubs where everyone drinks and there\u2019s a lot of smoke. IF IT\u2019S A DOCUMENT, THAT\u2019S A BONUS\u201d<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span>Wood\u2019s work often draws comparisons to the photos of English photographer Martin Parr \u2013 and, superficially, it\u2019s easy to see why. The saturated colours and vignettes from 80s Britain resonate, but as Wood himself notes, they come from a very different place. \u201cWhen I first met Martin Parr, he said, \u2018I\u2019m a documentary photographer. If I get a good picture, it\u2019s a bonus,\u2019\u201d Wood explains. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Martin, I\u2019m interested in good photographs. If it\u2019s a document, it\u2019s a bonus.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In fact, Wood tries \u201cnever\u201d to use the word documentary. Instead, he says: \u201cI\u2019m exploring life through the camera, something like a receiver of sensations. Sensations are intangible; you try and organise them through the act of photography. That sounds pretentious, or whatever.
