Nonetheless, I’ve (finally) arrived, and so naturally, cottages were on my mind. Small, cosy enclosures where intimacy bubbles and sticks. Where secrets are divulged and magic, whatever kind your mind leans towards, sparks. That said, there was no getting frisky at this cottage – not that it was off limits, I just took my best girlfriend. Nonetheless, imagine my glee when I, too, realised “I am coming to the cottage.”

After a two-night stint in Germany, landing back in London’s Heathrow airport at 8 am, I rushed home for a quick nap – 26 minutes, to be precise – before making my way on to The Woodcote. A train ride of much-needed girly natter, the aching temple throb of a hangover, a child’s rendition of Jingle Bells (it’s Springtime) ringing in my ear, and at last, we were transported from Pullborough station to an eyes-view away from South Downs National Park – where The Woodcote comfortably and quietly resides.

The restaurant-first, cottage-second, rests in an evergreen vast. It’s a blissful Southern English sanctuary, and it’s absolutely where Shane and Ilya might hide away for all kinds of secret and sensual niceties to unravel in. But more than anything, The Woodcote is undeniably a place to seek solace. A home not-too-far from home that promises pure rest and relaxation, and great – and I truly mean, great – food.

It’s late afternoon when we arrive, and the air twinkles with a marinated mist. It’s bright and crisp, and the sun bids farewell over its East side, beckoning a skinny-stemmed glass of champagne…or two, before dinner. While discussing how to host a wedding here – hypothetically speaking, of course – The Woodcote’s head chef (at the time) and his team walk by, stopping for a welcome and brief chat before they went to take their well-deserved wellness walk in the nearby gardens.

Then, our wonderful host, Gosia, kindly walked us to our room: the Fitzlea. As she unlocked the doors, it was just like in the movies; my best friend, Hannah, and I looked at each other, wide-eyed – almost shedding real tears. If you’ve ever dreamed of a cosy, coastal Hamptons home, this is your closest bet. Behold, a Super King-sized bed plush with large pillows (we counted six) and a cloud-like duvet. I can confirm that these pillows enveloped us so much so that I forgot what the weight of my head felt like. Five minutes, please. Then, as you crossed the bed, a small door led to a bush-enclosed personal patio where a set of metal chairs awaited – perfect for a morning tea or an evening wine.

Not long after, we were quickly stolen from our whimsy when Gosia knocked on our door to call us for dinner. So, back along the path we tread and in through the dining room, where we’d perch at The Woodcote Bar. Here, you’re encouraged – albeit very persuasively – to indulge in their curated list of wines and cocktails. From The Manchester to a Sussex 75 (my personal favourite) and their Hibiscus Margarita (Hannah’s top pick), there’s something sweet for every twang and taste bud – all mixed and served by our trusty sommelier, Will.

Then, our table awaited us – tucked away in the corner of the conservatory, which doubles as a dining room. In the near-midnight blue of the evening, it is intimate, only lit by the soft hue of the outdoor fairy lights that outline a family of wooden deer.

Here, they take great pride in their produce, most of which is grown on nearby soil. As far as hotel food chains go, this is largely collaborative, with all of their suppliers acting more like family than business partners. That much is clear with how cheerfully and proudly the staff talk about the ingredients that make up their dishes.

So, our dinner started with an onion velouté – not my personal favourite, but undoubtedly tasty to those who’d love a rich, creamy palette cleanser. Soon after, we get to tuck into a three-course meal, starting with caviar-topped cured pollock and crab tartlets, before tucking into a succulent sirloin of Sussex beef and duck breast. And although there probably wasn’t much room left for dessert, who can resist a sweet treat? Spoilt for choice, a list boasting yoghurt cake with fennel sorbet and apple compote, and a sloe parfait with apple meringue, the ‘Taste of Woodcote’ as they call it, appears before us. After much deliberation, we chose the chocolate crèmeux and pistachio bakewell. To no one’s surprise, both were truly irresistible, and as we trudged back to our room, sweet goodness still lingering in our mouths, it, admittedly, made brushing our teeth before bed very hard.

Now, as much as we’d have liked to end the night with face masks and some more girly natter and gossip – as we had planned – that bed just did not allow it. Those pillows whispered a seductive “Come here” and the comforter lured us into its creases, welcoming us into one of the sexiest sleeps I’ve ever experienced. We ‘fell’ head-first into that slate-blue and cream striped bed to the sounds of couples arguing via Channel 4’s Married At First Sight Australia.

Then, morning arose, and sweet birds soundtracked our getting ready, which presented an array of opposing emotions; exciting, because of the yummy food that was yet to come and getting to wake up to that gorgeous, sun-lit green dreamscape. Saddening because it introduced our last day in utter bliss. Nonetheless, breakfast was ready.

We kicked our stomachs into gear with a homemade green juice by our new friend, Lucy, settling it with an English breakfast tea for Hannah and peppermint tea pour moi. Then, if by the click of a finger, a beautiful breakfast spread lay splayed across our table. Some homemade granola accompanied by coconut yoghurt and fresh berries picked from the grounds garden. A clean plate of their Full English, with all of the expected goodness: collar bacon, The Woodcote sausage, Hellgate Farm eggs, however you like them – poached in my case – black pudding, juicy grilled tomatoes and baked beans. How I was going to make room for lunch, beats me – but two hours later, we did with the infamous Woodcote roast.

These are what Yorkshire pudding dreams are made of. I devoured the roasted free-range Sussex chicken with seasonal veg and a serving of asparagus (which I still dream about). Like a trooper, I stormed through my meal, savouring every mouthful, and sipped on yet another slim-stemmed glass of white wine, carefully selected by Ian, a dapper gentleman who had just moved country side from Manhattan, New York. I could stay in this moment for a long while, enjoying a classic Sunday roast with a Woodcote twist to the hum of afternoon chatter, clinking drinks and cutlery quickly scraping plates.

But sadly, all good things must come to an end. As the remnants of my hearty Sussex-made roast lingered on my tongue, my ride arrived. With farewell thanks, hugs and handshakes, I was whisked away from The Woodcote and back into the whirlwind of the city.

Evidently, one night at the cottage will leave you wanting more.

Words – Aswan Magumbe

    17 July 2026

Culture

Reviews

Raye Toasts Time At Montreux Jazz Festival

An evening with Eve Babitz in East London

Wonderland THIS IS THE COTTAGE YOU’LL WANT TO VISIT THIS SUMMER At West Sussex’s The Woodcote, you can get some real R&R: rest and pretty good roasts.
