unable to afford a healthy diet, as the cost of eating healthy has spiked in recent years.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--health js-article-content\">\n<p>The global cost of a healthy diet has increased 25% over the past five years, exceeding the extreme poverty line \u2014 living on less than $3.00 (\u20ac2,62) a day \u2014 the United Nations warned. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" diet,\u201d said M\u00e1ximo Torero Cullen, chief economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at the United Nations, speaking to reporters ahead of the launch of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report on 21 July. <\/p>\n<p>He added that the current cost of a healthy diet, one that meets all nutritional needs, is 4.28 per person per day, adjusted for differences in the cost of living between countries, which is over the extreme poverty line \u2014an international standard to measure absolute poverty \u2013 which is set at$3 (\u20ac2,62) per person per day.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the expenditure does not go to getting enough calories but to having nutrient-rich foods in the diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalories are relatively inexpensive,\u201d Torero said, \u201cbut nutrition is not.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Staple foods, the main foods people eat every day, such as grains and root vegetables, make up most of a person&#8217;s daily calories and represent only 13% of the cost of a healthy diet. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn contrast, fruits and vegetables provide only 5% of the calories but account for 16% of the cost, so significantly more expensive than cereals, and animal source foods account for almost 30% of the cost,\u201d Torero noted. <\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the challenge \u201cis not to produce enough calories but to make nutrient-rich foods more affordable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>An unhealthy diet is one of the leading risks for the global burden of disease, mainly for noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and healthy diet has increased 25% over the past five years, exceeding the extreme poverty line \u2014 living on less than $3.00 (\u20ac2,62) a day \u2014 the United Nations warned.\u00a0\u201cAs a result, 2.69 billion people, almost one in every three people in the world, still cannot afford a healthy diet,\u201d said M\u00e1ximo Torero Cullen, chief economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at the United Nations, speaking to reporters ahead of the launch of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report on 21 July.\u00a0He added that the current cost of a healthy diet, one that meets all nutritional needs, is 4.28 per person per day, adjusted for differences in the cost of living between countries, which is over the extreme poverty line \u2014an international standard to measure absolute poverty \u2013 which is set at$3 (\u20ac2,62) per person per day.Most of the expenditure does not go to getting enough calories but to having nutrient-rich foods in the diet.\u201cCalories are relatively inexpensive,\u201d Torero said, \u201cbut nutrition is not.\u201d\u00a0Staple foods, the main foods people eat every day, such as grains and root vegetables,\u00a0 make up most of a person&#8217;s daily calories and represent only 13% of the cost of a healthy diet.\u00a0\u201cIn contrast, fruits and vegetables provide only 5% of the calories but account for 16% of the cost, so significantly more expensive than cereals, and animal source foods account for almost 30% of the cost,\u201d Torero noted.\u00a0Therefore, the challenge \u201cis not to produce enough calories but to make nutrient-rich foods more affordable,\u201d he said.An unhealthy diet is one of the leading risks for the global burden of disease, mainly for noncommunicable
