European hospitals; however, only a few countries govern them, putting patients at risk, the WHO Europe chief said.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--health js-article-content\">\n<p>Artificial intelligence tools are revolutionising health care, giving hope to an overstretched health workforce. From diagnostic tools to better workflows \u2014 AI is helping healthcare systems across Europe. However, while the tools are in place, the regulations are nowhere to be found in most of the countries, World Health Organization (WHO) Europe chief Hans Henri P. Kluge warned. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-desktop\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That gap \u2014 between deployment and governance \u2014 is the defining challenge of AI in health right now,\u201d Kluge said in a press conference in Lisbon on 15 July. <\/p>\n<p>The longer that gap persists \u2014 the higher the human cost, he warned. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA biased algorithm can produce a wrong diagnosis, for a real patient, with real consequences,\u201d Kluge said.<\/p>\n<p>Two-thirds of the 53 WHO Europe countries are already deploying AI diagnostics and half of the countries have AI-powered patient chatbots, but only a few \u2014 one in 12 \u2014 have strategies for how to govern AI.<\/p>\n<p>Only 8% of countries in the WHO European Region have a health-specific AI strategy and almost 40% of countries have no ethical guidance on AI use in healthcare settings. From diagnostic tools to better workflows \u2014 AI is helping healthcare systems across Europe. However, while the tools are in place, the regulations are nowhere to be found in most of the countries, World Health Organization (WHO) Europe chief Hans Henri P. Kluge warned.\u00a0That gap \u2014 between deployment and governance \u2014 is the defining challenge of AI in health right now,\u201d Kluge said in a press conference in Lisbon on 15 July.\u00a0The longer that gap persists \u2014 the higher the human cost, he warned.\u00a0\u201cA biased algorithm can produce a wrong diagnosis, for a real patient, with real consequences,\u201d Kluge said.Two-thirds of the 53 WHO Europe countries are already deploying AI diagnostics and half of the countries have AI-powered patient chatbots, but only a few \u2014 one in 12\u00a0 \u2014 have strategies for how to govern AI.Only 8% of countries in the WHO European Region have a health-specific AI strategy and almost 40% of countries have no ethical guidance on AI use in healthcare settings.
